PROCEDURE GTT (GAZ TRANSPORT & TECHNIGAZ) & MEMBRANE CONTAINMENT SYSTEMS GENERAL APPROVAL AND SUPPLY OF MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS 1. It is necessary for materials and component parts of the containment system to comply with relevant Gas Code and Rule requirements in respect of their properties (Rules for Gas Ships section LR 6.8). This General Approval procedure sets out a standard for all materials and components. 2. GTT have produced a set of material and component specifications ( M3XXX Specifications ) for each type of the significant materials and components used on the and systems. The latest versions of the M3XXX Specifications are listed below for reference and may be considered as being correct as of the date of issue of this procedure. The versions of these documents held by the shipyard and intended to be used for the vessel / project being considered should be consistent with the approved List of Generic Documents Applicable to the Project ( Gen List ) for that vessel/project. MTES/HULL/16615784, 23/12/2014 Notes: (1) Mk III material/components approvals should be considered to cover Mk III Flex, and material/components approvals should be considered to cover L03, unless otherwise specifically indicated. (2) It may be that the specification version being proposed by the shipyard is not the latest version. This is acceptable provided it is the version shown on the approved Gen List. (3) MTES/Structures should be contacted for information on the comments which are to be taken account of where indicated in the final column of Table 1. (4) This adhesive is used for the insulation panel assembly. (5) This adhesive is used for bonding the secondary barrier to the pump tower base support (PTBS) & to Stainless Steel Plate in Liquid Dome and Gas Dome Area. (6) This specification covers both the rigid secondary barrier material (RSB) and the flexible secondary barrier material (FSB). (7) In case there is an intention to reduce the insulation thicknesses (or decrease the boil-off rate) of Mk III or Mk III Flex designs based on the low thermal conductivity of this foam, then thermal conductivity confirmatory testing is required witnessed by an LR attending Surveyor. (8) This material was used for the hardwood keys on the old rectangular PTBS design. There are no hardwood keys fitted on the conical PTBS design and therefore this material is no longer used on Newbuilding projects. 3. Approvals 3.1 The following table lists the materials/components of the and containment systems and gives the approval and submission requirements for each material/component. Only those materials/components identified by the column General Approval will require General Approval under this scheme. Batches of completed materials/components require survey or provision of certificates of conformity as identified by the column Batch Testing. Table 2. (1) If the components are fabricated within the shipbuilder s premises and inspected by the attending LR Surveyors during the construction of the ship, then the certificate need not be issued except if requested by the Owners or Shipbuilders themselves. (2) A Certificate of Conformity is a certificate issued by the manufacturer of the particular component / material being supplied attesting to the fact that their product conforms to the supply specification. (3) Component parts are covered by other M3XXX Specifications. (4) The studs, nuts and washers are necessary, at least in theory, only for holding the insulation panels in place until the mastic cures, so the base material does not need to be approved in accordance with LR s procedures.

(5) Stainless steel supplied from LR approved works. Batch testing is to comply with the relevant GTT specification. (6) Forged components are to be manufactured in a works approved in accordance with LR s Material and Qualification Procedures for Ships Book E. (7) The base material for coupler rods and setting plates is to be manufactured in a works approved in accordance with LR s Material and Qualification Procedures for Ships Book C. (8) Weld procedure to be qualified in advance to LR's satisfaction. (9) Appraisal by LR Technical Support office following pre-production testing not required. Initial factory acceptance may be undertaken by the attending Surveyor. (10) Surveyor attendance not required if primer testing has already been witnessed in conjunction with load bearing mastic testing. (11) To be available to the Surveyors on request. (12) See 4.2.3 and 4.2.4 below. (13) General Approval required only if the material/component is to be used on Mk III and systems. (14) Invar supplied from LR approved works. Batch testing is to comply with the relevant GTT specification. (15) Invar (raw material) supplied from LR approved works compliant with GTT specification M3028. (16) Stainless steel (raw material) supplied from LR approved works compliant with the relevant GTT specifications. 3.2 It should be noted that there are no GTT specifications for wedge stiffening for Mk III and primary barrier corrugations, invar tubes and other prefabricated invar components, coupler sockets (forged), and coupler rods and setting plates for, but full details (materials and dimensions) are shown on the Building Principles and other approved drawings. Invar tubes and other major prefabricated invar components are to be inspected by attending Lloyd s Register surveyors during fabrication. 3.3 The manufacturers of all materials/components are expected to operate a documented quality control system which is to be made available to the attending LR Surveyors for review. The plywood manufacturers, plywood cleat manufacturers, densified wood laminate manufacturers, insulation panel manufacturers and insulation box manufacturers will be expected to submit their quality control documentation in advance of the General Approval for review by the attending LR Surveyors, who may in turn consult with the Southampton TSO/Ship Structures or other applicable Technical Support office when considered necessary, at their discretion. 3.4 The submission of data sheets which are not supported by actual test results carried out as described in 4.2 below will not be accepted. 3.5 Following satisfactory review of test reports, a General Approval certificate will be issued and the accompanying letter will state that the material/component is approved for use in the containment system, as detailed in 4. below. 4. General Approval 4.1 The approval of a material/component will allow the issuance of a General Approval Certificate for the material/component to a manufacturer which will be valid for a period of 5 years. This certificate will be restricted to the manufacture of material/component at the identified works and production line (where applicable) for the production process applied at the time of approval in accordance with a specified GTT M3XXX Specifications and revision number. 4.2 The General Approval consists of testing the material/component by either of the following means: 4.2.1 Testing in a nationally accredited laboratory independent from manufacturer, shipyard and GTT does not require witnessing by an attending LR Surveyor. 4.2.2 Testing at the laboratory of the manufacturer, shipyard, GTT, or other laboratory which is not nationally accredited requires witnessing by an attending LR Surveyor. 4.2.3 For plywood, plywood cleat, and densified wood laminate production, the attending LR Surveyor is required to witness both the General Approval testing and also the pre-production run from which the plywood test samples are selected. This is a suitable time for the attending LR Surveyor to see the QA/QC procedures in operation as specified in 3.3 above. 4.2.4 For complete insulation panels and insulation boxes, General Approval consists of pre-production testing of the panels and boxes which requires witnessing by

an attending LR Surveyor. This is a suitable time for the attending Surveyor to see the QA/QC procedures in operation as specified in 3.3 above. 4.3 If either the GTT reference documentation mentioned in Table 1 above is altered to a later version, or if the product changes in design or composition, then the General Approval Certificate becomes invalid. In such a case, the General Approval Certificate will be re-issued if the changes are considered minor and not affecting the product properties, otherwise further testing will be required at the discretion of the relevant LR Technical Support office. 4.4 A manufacturer holding a current General Approval Certificate may request an additional grade of a similar material/component to be approved, for instance an additional thickness or type of plywood. After the required testing is completed, this may be covered by inclusion on the current Certificate, or by issuing a separate certificate for the additional grade, at the manufacturer s choice. 4.5 For the renewal of a General Approval Certificate, an application should be made by the manufacturer to the relevant LR Technical Support office via the local LR office. The application will be processed with consideration of previous records and any circumstances which relate to the manufacturer in question at the time of application. The manufacturer must provide a statement confirming that the sources of the raw materials and/or components, manufacturing procedures, QA/QC procedures and place of manufacturing have not changed during the period of validity of the certificate. If so, renewal of the General Approval Certificate will be granted. The date of expiry of the renewed General Approval Certificate will be no later than 10 years after the date of commencement of the Certificate it replaces. 4.6 Every 10 years after the issuance of the first certificate or last full set of testing, whichever comes earlier, full re-testing of the product will be required in order to extend the General Approval. The extended General Approval will be valid for 5 years, with renewal available for a further 5 years, as described above. 4.7 The reasons for any failure of supplied batches of material should be fed back to the relevant LR Technical Support office. Any problems / issues found during installation on board related to the quality of supplied material should be fed back similarly. 5. Material Acceptance 5.1 Materials/components produced by manufacturers which do not hold a General Approval Certificate issued by LR should not be accepted. This is because the composition of the containment system must be fully to LR s satisfaction as failure in the system components could have severe consequences for the safety of the vessel. 5.2 Notwithstanding the above, if small quantities of particular materials are requested to be accepted with certification from another Society, the advice of the relevant LR Technical Support office should be sought. 5.3 Certificates issued against the superseded MH and M specifications for the superseded External Document specifications, or the older superseded revisions of the M3XXX specifications will be replaced on application from the manufacturer, by new certificates with the same expiry date against the applicable updated M3XXX Specifications provided any additional tests required by the M3XXX specification taking account of any LR comments on that specification, are carried out with satisfactory results. Requests for this to be done should be made to the local LR office. A fee will be required for this service. 6. Application for Approval and Fees 6.1 A manufacturer applying for General Approval of a material/component covered by this scheme, or for renewal of an existing General Approval, should contact the local LR office with information clearly categorised as follows: Manufacturer s name, place of manufacture, production line (where applicable), and address for correspondence.

Name of the material/component. GTT material specification (M3XXX) against which approval is sought. The name(s) and addresses of the laboratories where the tests will be carried out. Confirmation of national accreditation of laboratories (to permit tests to go ahead without LR attendance). Any other information which the manufacturer would like to be taken into account. M3XXX specifications do not need to be submitted to the relevant Lloyd s Register (LR) Technical Support office except where they are a later version than that indicated. 6.2 Approval will only be granted to manufacturers (i.e. companies which make the product from raw materials and/or components of the product), not to stockholders, agents, trading companies or others parties who have not manufactured the product. 6.3 The local LR office will make a quotation to the manufacturer taking account of attendance at the manufacturer to witness the production of samples prior to testing, attendance during tests, and review of test reports by the relevant LR Technical Support office, where applicable/to the extent required, as described in this procedure. Revision history 04.2017 (JRA/DB) General Update after incorporating the Mark V specifications. 03.2015 (JRA/DB) General Update based on previous revision on 2014. 04.2014 (AJM) Updated for revised GTT materials specifications, introduction of the Gen List, clarification of the expiry date of renewal certificates, information required for approval application, exclusion of nonmanufacturers, inclusion of latest LR logo and abbreviated liability clause, and general editorial revision including new Procedure title. 10.2013 (SN) Update on revised specifications and typo errors correction. 07.2013 (AJM/SN) General Update based on previous revision on 2011. 05.2011 (AJM/JD) based on earlier procedures from 2004, last revised 02.2008 (LEE).
