BIOMASS SOLUTIONS FOR A WORLD

OF ENERGY

Burmeister & wain energy a/s...it all began in 1843 Burmeister & Wain Energy A/S is a Danish company with many years of experience as a supplier of high-tech solutions for the power generation industry. The company dates back to a period when Denmark s industrial development had not yet gained momentum. The history of the company began in 1843 when a young and enterprising engineer, Hans Heinrich Baumgarten, was awarded a royal license to establish a machine shop in Copenhagen. In 1846 he went into partnership with Carl Christian Burmeister. Baumgarten retired in 1861 and was succeeded in 1865 by William Wain, and the company Burmeister & Wain was finally founded in 1872 soon becoming the largest and most important enterprise in the iron industry of Denmark. In modern times the involvement in biomass based power generation started in the beginning of the 1970 s. The product line has been under constant development ever since. Today BWE supplies combustion systems as well as tailor made steam generators for both untreated biomass in the form of bales or chips as well as pre-treated biomass in the form of pellets. BWE supplied the steam generator as well as the complete combustion system for the largest biomass fired power station in the world, DONG Energy s Avedøreværket # 2, which has a firing capacity of 585 MJ/s on biomass alone. In 1980 Burmeister & Wain Energy A/S (BWE) was established as an independent company, and in 2002 it was acquired by the Italian company STF SpA. The history of BWE in the field of biomass boilers has its origins as early as in the second half of the 19 th century, when B&W supplied its first biomass fired steam generators - in those days mainly in the form of bagasse fired units to the sugar mills in the former Danish West Indies: St. Thomas, St. John & St. Croix (today s Virgin Islands).

Vision To remain a leading supplier of boiler and environmental technology through technology supply and engineering services to national and international clients. To be a significant international player in the upgrading of existing boilers for higher efficiencies, lower emissions or for conversion to alternative fuels. To be a significant European player providing services and maintenance to utilities directly or through alliances. Research and development Approximately 80% of the people employed by BWE are working in the engineering division with longstanding experience in boiler technology. With a highly qualified workforce great emphasis is placed on research and development within the company. This has resulted in various new important technological solutions and new systems contributing to the protection of the environment. The focus on research and development has placed our company in a leading position in the sector of renewable energy.

BWE and the great potential of biomass Facts The economic feasibility of the extensive use of biomass in energy production is supported by the regulatory framework and environmental policies following the implementation of Kyoto and post Kyoto protocol targets. The technologies for biomass combustion are proven, reliable and often integrated into urban heating systems Actions The targets imposed by the environment preservation needs will have to be further developed in order to move ahead projects presently stalling between unclear regulatory framework and financial constraints. The spreading of co combustion technology of biomass in coal fired power plants would increase the potential of quickly introducing renewable energy into existing power stations.

BWE s equipment represents the leading technological example for the future of biomass for power generation. BWE has demonstrated the operational flexibility of biomass power plants in terms of fuel interchangeability, pollution control, low cost of maintenance, with the best performances. Extracting more power from biomass We supply the State-of-Art Technologies for: Biomass boilers Biomass burners Co-combustion of biomass and coal

Biomass fired boilers For small scale applications, BWE offers biomass fired natural circulated drum type boilers. Water cooled vibrating grate BWE has developed a water cooled vibrating grate for biomass combustion which can be applied for a fuel input up to 150 MW. Grate firing requires less fuel preparation than e.g. pulverized fuel firing. The fuel is used as it is, i.e. there is no step between the forest or the farmer and the plant. Consequently, the fuel handling and the preparation equipment are substantially reduced compared to burner operation. The grate is included in the main water/steam cycle of the plant and thereby it does not reduce the overall plant efficiency. Furthermore, supplementary firing is not necessary. Generating steam with data as high as 120 bar and 540 C, an elevated plant efficiency is ensured. Grate firing can also be adapted to once-through Benson boilers.

Two types of grate boilers Due to the different ways of leading the fuel into the furnace and the different combustion air systems, there are two different types of biomass grate boilers, one type for straw-like fuels tied in bales and another type for other higher density biomass fuels like wood chips using air-swept spreaders. STRAW FIRED BOILER SPREADER FIRED BIOMASS BOILER By straw firing, the bales are conveyed through seal gate arrangements to the scarifiers where the bale is loosened before it is pressed through the water cooled ducts to the grate. By wood chips firing, the fuel is blown into the furnace and onto the grate by air-swept spreaders. Today, BWE offers standard grate fired boilers in the sizes of 50, 80 and 120 MJ/s. By modifying the design it can be tailor-made and adapted to customer requirements

First straw fired boiler in Germany In cooperation with the German Company BE Bioenergie, BWE is to install the steam generator in the first straw fired power plant in Germany which will supply process steam and electricity to a nearby process installation as well as district heating to Emlichheim city and electricity to the grid. Key figures, steam generator: - Steam data: 67 t/h, 112 bar & 522 C - Boiler efficiency: 92% - Heat input: 50 MJ/s - Foot print: 25.2 x 43.2 m - Height of boiler house: 28 m

Firing system BWE has developed a firing system for straw firing adaptable to different types of squared bales such as Heston and Claas. The straw bales are conveyed through the fire barriers to the scarifiers. From here the scarified straw is fed on to the water cooled vibration grate where it is burned. 0,7 Fuel mixing The Emlichheim plant will be a pure straw fired plant. In other plants co-firing with other types of biomass like wood chips has been realized. On a straw fired boiler it is possible to co-fire with wood-chips up to 50% wt/wt-%.the share of cofiring depends on the humidity of the fuels. Max Mass Fraction of Woody Fuel [-] 0,6 0,5 0,4 0,3 0,2 10% (AR) moisture in straw fuel 20% (AR) moisture in straw fuel 0,1 25% (AR) moisture in straw fuel 0 30 35 40 45 50 55 Moisture in Woody Fuel [% As Received]

Biomass burners The BWE Bio Dust burner has the most advanced, efficient and robust design for the purpose. It is designed especially for the specific plant both for new plants and for the retrofit of all burner configurations: Front Wall, Boxer or Corner firing. The capacity of the burner ranges from 15 to 100 MW. Based on the customers requirements, the burner can be equipped with a gas lance or an oil lance. The burner is multiply controlled to obtain a stable flame, an optimum flame shape and low emissions. Furnace near parts are made of ultra high temperature resistant alloys and cast steels. Inspection, service and wear parts requirements are very low - all contributing to an economical and reliable operation. BWE recommends to install burners in connection with a general update of the entire firing and feeding system.

Herningværket The multifuel concept - an efficient way to reduce CO 2 emission 1982 2000 2002 2009 In 1982 BWE originally supplied the boiler of the plant and since 2002 we have converted the unit from 100% fossil firing to 100% biomass firing. In November 2008 BWE was awarded a contract from DONG Energy A/S for the design, supply, erection and commissioning of 4 burners for pulverized biomass (wood pellets) inclusive of pulverized fuel piping and the necessary modifications of the primary and secondary air systems at Herningværket. The installation took place during the summer outage of 2009 and the commissioning will be completed by the end of 2009. After the conversion the boiler is able to fire a total of 240 MW from biomass reducing the CO 2 emissions of the plant by 325,000 tons/year compared to 100% coal firing. Following the successful supply of burners for pulverized biomass to DONG Energy s Avedøreværket Unit 2 in 2002 and Vattenfall s Amagerværket Unit 1 in 2008, the contract establishes BWE s leading market position within this segment.

Co-combustion: turning coal into green

We are ready for the future With the state of the art technology in USC boilers, BWE is well ahead in time with the implementation of super high efficiency steam cycle plants which have proven an efficiency of over 47%. Furthermore, BWE is able provide high efficiency boilers with cocombustion of biomass pellets in coal fired boilers. Biomass pellets is a rather standardised fuel that can be utilized using the traditional coal firing technology. This includes milling plant, pneumatic transport and burners which can be used for either pulverized coal or biomass pellets. BWE has developed this system to a degree where the fuel range goes from 100% coal to 100% biomass pellets. Thus large quantities of biomass can be utilized while maintaining the full fuel flexibility.

Avedøre power plant Avedøre Unit 2 (AVV2), owned by Dong Energy, is one of the most efficient, fuel flexible, and environmentally friendly power plants in the world. The main plant of AVV2 is the Ultra Super Critical (USC) unit incorporating a BWE once through, Benson, tangentially fired boiler. In addition to generating electricity, the plant also supplies heat to the Copenhagen district heating network. The USC boiler of Unit 2 has been designed with a unique multi fuel firing system which makes it possible to utilize coal, HFO, NG and wood pellets as fuels burned in the same burners. Up to 73% biomass firing is possible reaching a fuel input of 585 MW making it the largest biomass fired power plant in the world.

The air staging is carried out through the burners as primary, secondary and tertiary air and above the burners as Over- Burner-Air (OBA) as well as Over-Fire-Air (OFA). This concept of air staging ensures the low primary formation of NOx.
