Carbon and Graphite Materials for Mechanical Seals Automotive & Mechanical Applications Broad Base. Best Solutions.

Tribological Behavior Friction Friction depends on surface finish of the mating surfaces rubbing speed specific loading type and quantity of lubricating medium Preferred Counterface Materials Gray cast iron Chromium cast Chrome steel Aluminum oxide Tungsten carbide Silicon carbide Carbon DLC-coated materials The following coefficients of friction (µ) can be assumed as a guide: Wet running: µ = 0.01-0.05 Mixed running: µ = 0.05-0.10 Dry running: µ = 0.10-0.25 Wear rates as a function of the counterface material, using EK 2230 and EK 3235 at a steady rubbing speed of 4.4 m/s and steady medium pressure of 10 bar for different counterface materials (chromium cast, aluminum oxide and silicon carbide). Medium: demineralized water. Wear (µm/100 h) 80 10 14 22 2 1 Chromium Cast EK 2230 Aluminum Oxide EK 3235 Silicon Carbide

Carbon and Graphite by SGL Group Applications Carbon and graphite materials are used in mechanical seals in cases where gases or liquids with low hydrodynamic lubricat - ing action have to be sealed. Fields of Application Fuel pumps Chemical pumps Process pumps in refineries Seals for agitators and autoclaves Cold and hot water pumps Pumps for household and garden appliances Water pumps for automobiles Heat removal loop pumps in nuclear power stations Pumps for the beverage industry. Service Life It is difficult to give expected wear figures as in practice many factors have to be considered, for example: mating materials rubbing speed loading surface finish of mating surfaces presence of solid impurities in the medium being sealed operating conditions. Wear rates as a function of the rubbing speed against carbidematerials, taking as examples EK 2200 and EK 3205 at a steady rubbing speed of 9 m/s and increasing load. Medium: demineralized water. Wear (µm/h) 10 1 0.1 0.01 10 1 0.1 0.01 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 Specific Loading (N/mm 2 ) Tungsten Carbide Silicon Carbide EK 2200 EK 3205 5

Tolerances and Dimensions According to Manufacturing Process and Typical Batch Sizes Mechanical Seals Manufacture Economic Batch Tolerances Size Pressed-to-size Tool-dependent manufacture Beginning at Tolerances ± 0.5 % of for large-batch production 2,500 units the nominal size, simple mechanical seals up to Ø 75 x 25 mm standard to average complex geometries RIDURID and Material-dependent manufacture Beginning at Tolerances from IT 9 are graphite-filled for large batches using the 5,000 units achievable plastic mechanical seals familiar process of plastics forming (injection molding, Possible without any hot pressing) limitation on the geometry Carbon graphite Machining for one-piece 1 5,000 units Tolerances from IT 6 are mechanical seals rings up to Ø 550 mm achieved Surface Flatness of Rubbing Faces Good Surface Flatness All of the above forming processes offer significant savings when the special features of carbon and graphite materials are considered at the design stage. Take advantage of SGL Group s technical support at the design stage. Surface Flatness of Rubbing Faces Flat Glass Poor Surface Flatness The optimal function of the seal is essentially dependent on the parallel - ism deviation of the two sliding partners. This is determined with the help of an interference testing set. The following deviations are permissible according to experience for mechanical seals (related to the outside diameter of the sealing surface): 1 light band = 0.297 µm; measured using interference test equipment Number of Light Bands 2 3 5 8 Diameter in mm < 75 75-150 150-225 > 225 6
