Changes to the dataset will be scheduled moving forward. We will offer a mechanism and opportunity for EMS stakeholders to review the recommended changes, discuss pros and cons, and identify the impact and benefit. Please see the table below for the minor revision process for future changes to the NEMSIS Version 3 dataset.

NEMSIS State Movement to Version 3

State Movement to v3 NEMSIS TAC Questionnaire Will be sent out March 2013 Reason: Assist States and NEMSIS TAC on planning Post information on NEMSIS website è Decrease calls from vendors to each state!! J Questions include: Have you started planning for transition to Version 3?

State Movement to v3 NEMSIS TAC Questionnaire (cont d) Questions include: Have you done any of the following (select all that apply): Formed a data committee or work group Reviewed and identified the state elements for collection No When do you plan for the State Data Collection System to be up and running?

NEMSIS V3 Dataset Concerns State Level 1. Custom Elements 2. Destination IDs: NPI Codes

Using V3 Custom Elements Open Discussion State s may identify custom elements to capture needs not met by the v3 dataset State custom elements and schematron rules will be submitted to the NEMSIS TAC for review NEMSIS will host a Custom Element library for review: searchable webpage under development NEMSIS will post each State s custom elements on the State v3 page

V3 Destination IDs: NPI Codes Open Discussion Discussion included options and potential benefits to using National Provider Identifiers for the healthcare facility codes. Ø Pros: NPI codes could be used across states (as EMS agencies transport patients across borders) Potential ease of use for EMS software vendors and states Ø Cons: Healthcare facilities have multiple NPIs for specific locations at one address The same NPI code can be used for healthcare facilities with different locations

V3 Destination IDs: NPI Codes Ø Cons: NPI codes are only assigned to healthcare facilities billing CMS NPI not needed to bill DECISION: Use State assigned codes for licensed healthcare facilities. Other descriptors and codes can be created by each state (e.g. private residence, etc.) Each state will provide a list to NEMSIS. State facility/destination lists will be posted on each state s NEMSIS page.
