Biology Mrs. Howe Tues, 2/7 New Seats Bioethical Decision Making Model (pg. 1-2)-> due Block 1 Start fresh with semester 2 and our next unit. Due Today: None Announcements: Have you checked your Semester 1 grade online?

Biology Block 1 Mrs. Howe Wed, 2/8 Review Bioethical Decision Making Model Tour of the Basics Webquest (pg. 3-4)-> due Block 2 Contrast the number of chromosomes in body cells and in gametes. Due Today: Bioethical Decision Making Model (pg. 1-2) Announcements: None

2/8: Warm Up 1 Baby Mice Seif's pet mouse had babies. Five of the babies were black and two were white. The father mouse was black and the mother was white. Seif and his friends wondered why the mice were different colors. These were their ideas: Jerome: Baby mice inherit more traits from their fathers than their mothers. Alexa: The baby mice got half their traits from their father and half from their mother. June: Male traits are stronger than female traits. Seif: Black mice have more traits than white mice. Fiona: The black baby mice are male and the white baby mice are female. Lydia: Parents' traits don't matter-nature decides what something will look like. Billy: Blood type determines what traits babies will have. Which friend do you most agree with and why? Explain your thinking.

Biology Block 2 Mrs. Howe Thurs, 2/9 or Fri,2/10 Review Tour of the Basics Mendel s Principles Notes Bozeman Science: Mendelian Genetics (pg. 5-6) Monohybrid Crosses (pg. 7-10)-> due Mon Describe Mendel s studies & conclusions about inheritance. Explain how genetic outcomes are determined using probability & Punnett squares. Due Today: Tour of the Basics (pg. 3-4) Announcements: None

2/9 or 2/10: Warm Up 2 Solving Problems w Genetics Based on what you know or have recently learned, how is genetics being used to solve today s problems? Be as specific as you can.

2/13: Warm Up 3 Punnett Squares Tall plants are dominant over short plants. When a tall plant is crossed with a short plant, some of the offspring are short. What are the genotypes of the parents and offspring? What is the phenotypic ratio in the offspring? Use T & t to represent the alleles for height.

Biology Block 1 Mrs. Howe Tues, 2/14 Review Homework Futurama Activity- Part 1-> due Today Dihybrid Crosses (pg. 13-14)-> due Tues Describe Mendel s studies & conclusions about inheritance. Explain how genetic outcomes are determined using probability & Punnett squares. Due Today: Genetic Crosses that Involve Two Traits (pg. 11-12) Announcements: None

Biology Block 2 Mrs. Howe Wed, 2/15 or Thurs, 2/16 Genetic Disorders Project Introduction-> due 3/10 Futurama Activity- Part 2-> due Tues Dihybrid Crosses (pg. 13-14)-> due Tues Describe Mendel s studies & conclusions about inheritance. Explain how genetic outcomes are determined using probability & Punnett squares. Due Today: None Announcements: None

2/15 or 2/16: Warm Up 5 Blue-eyed People 1.) Why should you shake the hand of the nearest blueeyed person? 2.) Originally people all had what colored eyes? 3.) What was the switch that turned off the ability to produce brown eyes? 4.) Most mammals share the normal form of what gene? 5.) Where do the scientists figure the mutation took place? 6.) Neither the first person to have the mutation, nor his or her children would have blue eyes. What had to happen for the trait to show up? 7.) The blue-eyed mutation is not considered to be a positive or negative but it does create a survival advantage in northern European countries. What is the advantage?

Biology Mrs. Howe Fri, 2/17 Genetic Disorder Project-> due 3/10 Identify the types of human chromosomes in a karyotype. Explain how pedigrees are used to study human traits. Summarize the problems caused by nondisjunction. Due Today: None Announcements: None

2/21: Warm Up 6 Dihybrid Cross Practice The following Punnett Square has been created to show the dihybrid cross between pea plants that are heterozygous for seed shape (Rr) and seed color (Tt). Draw and complete the Punnett square, then determine the resulting genotypic and phenotypic ratios. RR or Rr = smooth TT or Tt = green RT rr = wrinkled tt = yellow RT Rt rt rt Rt rt rt

2/22 or 2/23: Warm Up 7 Incomplete & Co-Dominance Some superheroes have a special allele on the gene for eyesight. One of the homozygous traits is the ability to see through solid objects. (xx) The other homozygous trait is normal 20/20 vision (nn). The heterozygous condition (xn) gives a superhero that can t see through objects, but has REALLY good vision, like a hawk. A.) What type of inheritance is this? B.) Two superheroes have kids. One has x-ray vision. The other has hawk eye vision. Write the cross: C.) Make the Punnett Square. D.)
