The overwhelming raw material for the electric furnace steelmaking process is recycled steel scrap. Recycled steel scrap consists of post-consumer and pre-consumer portions depending upon the sources and requirements for each steel plant. In addition to the recycled steel scrap, a small percentage of non-recycled raw materials, including pig iron, direct reduced iron and ferro-alloys, are used depending upon the metallurgical requirements. We do not routinely track which suppliers provided the scrap for any particular batch of steel. However, in general, at least 80% to 90% or more of the scrap we use comes from suppliers located within approximately 200 miles of our mills.
