GOOD WORKING LIFE IS OUR MISSION TEK s Benefits and Services

TEK For Your Benefit Serving you and protecting your interests so you can have the best possible working life. Academic Engineers and Architects in Finland TEK has approximately 70,000 members. We represent academic engineers, architects, physicists, mathematicians, IT specialists and students studying these fields. TEK supports its members in their careers, promotes professional community spirit and competence, and works to build a sustainable welfare society. We want our members to have the best possible careers. In 2017, we are lobbying for the following matters, among others: Encouraging constant learning The world is changing fast. In order to ensure one s value in the labour market and maintain Finland s competitiveness, it is essential that members of the workforce can develop their knowledge with the support of their employer or or by developing their professional competence during unemployment periods. A safety net for entrepreneurs and the self-employed More and more people are now switching between the roles of employee and part-time or full-time entrepreneur. This transition should be easy. Therefore, employee and entrepreneur unemployment benefits must be harmonised. Renewing the Working Hours Act All hours an employee is available to work for an employer regardless of place and time must be calculated as work hours. Employers are responsible for the flexible monitoring of work hours, while employees can take on more responsibility for their own work, its location and scheduling.

UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE Members of TEK are normally insured through the IAET-KASSA UNEMPLOYMENT FUND. Further information on this insurance can be found at www.iaet.fi, which also provides advice in English. In case of unemployment, your daily benefits from the IAET-kassa will be considerably higher than the basic allowance paid by Kela, the Social Insurance Institution of Finland. Your entitlement to IAET-kassa benefits begins after 26 weeks of fund membership and full-time employment. INFORMATION ON SALARIES Each year, TEK conducts a labour market survey to determine the salary levels and other terms of employment of its members. The survey findings are analysed based on the educational background of members, years of employment, job characteristics and other factors. For further details, visit www.tek.fi/en/salaries. SUCCESSFUL WORKING LIFE TEK strives for fair wage development and employment conditions for its members. We want our members to have the opportunity to develop their professional competence and be able to create a successful career. TEK takes a central role in the national collective bargaining process and in negotiating the salaries and terms of employment of professionals. At the international level, TEK is affiliated with European and global organisations. Collective agreements in the private and public sectors At the industry level, agreements are negotiated by trade unions and employers federations. These terms and conditions are called collective agreements. The negotiating parties create rules for these industries so that individual employees do not have to negotiate for the same issues. The collective agreement defines, for example, sick pay, overtime compensation, compensation for travel expenses and holiday bonuses. Shop steward YTN* and JUKO s** shop stewards represent the personnel at the workplace in all employment-related matters and ensure the application of collective agreements in the private and public sectors. COMPETITIVENESS THROUGH EXPERTISE A meaningful career is achieved through a high level of professional expertise, which benefits both the expert and all of society. We want the quality of technical university education in Finland to be the best in the world and we work to ensure that everyone has good opportunities to develop their expertise at all stages of their career. We help technical universities to develop their teaching and are involved in strengthening the recruitment base of universities by promoting expertise in mathematics and the natural sciences. We want universities to work interactively with the rest of society. The research carried out at universities and research institutes creates new information, which, at its best, leads to the creation of new products and services, along with new jobs and welfare. A COMPETITIVE INNOVATION ENVIRONMENT With technology, Finland can create new, sustainable growth. We participate in improving the efficiency of the Finnish innovation system in order to enable the creation of new welfare and new jobs for technology professionals. We work in cooperation with our partnership network. Important partners include, among others, the Ministry of Employment and the Economy, Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation), VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Sitra, and parties involved in Protomo. We contribute to international climate efforts through the Climate Programme of Finnish engineering organisations. Each year, we present the Finnish Engineering Award as an acknowledgement of a significant innovation. We also grant awards for meritorious doctoral dissertations and theses in the field of technology. Read more at www.tek.fi/en/technology-future
