The Solution: Migrate Multiple Applications to an Enterprise, Cloud-based Architecture The project began with an assessment of each transitioning application to determine which elements could be migrated and which should remain in the legacy environment. Judge supported the company s infrastructure team, standing up servers in the cloud for each application, and guided it through the process of configuring the environments and application-specific requirements. The cloud technology chosen was Amazon Web Services (AWS). The platform was capable, but adhered to specific AWS guidelines. Because the cloud architecture only allowed for web service communication into the legacy environments from a middleware server in the cloud, all applications were modified to directly connect to any internal web service, system, or database. After this modification, the applications would then consume RESTful services from SnapLogic. The Judge team took into account the types of operating systems to be installed on the servers; and some applications required restructuring and re-engineering to work within the AWS infrastructure. Some required updates to work with others based on newer versions of software and systems. Following a month of planning and preparations, the actual migrations took as little as two days for small applications to three or four weeks for the largest ones. Technologies Implemented SnapLogic JBoss Amazon Web Services, Apache RESTful Web Services JavaEE HTML5 JavaScript CSS3 Bootstrap Oracle The project s second phase focused on optimization. The Judge team matched some of the processes and applications so those processes could be reused. Code was re-written and source code repositories restructured. Judge assisted the company in constructing a new change control process that significantly reduced the resource needs around change implementation. Judge also provided guidance on how best to implement automated testing, continuous integration, and a more standardized and manageable source control management system. The Results: A More Cost-Effective, Reliable and Elastic Application Infastructure The company was able to sunset the dozen legacy applications, shut down the hardware on which they were running, and save tens of thousands of dollars per month per application by running them solely in the cloud. Other benefits included: A more reliable and elastic infrastructure Maintainable growth A reusable framework for future applications using SnapLogic This project marked the first successful transition of this company s applications to the Amazon Web Services platform.
