APPLEGATE - HORSE SHELTERS 6, 12, 15, 18, & 24 SHELTERS 1. Introduction 1. INTRODUCTION Applegate portable horse shelters combine versatility, longevity, safety, and low maintenance costs. With a little effort you can provide your horses with sturdy and handsome pasture protection from the weather. The portable horse shelter is 3-sided to provide protection from the prevailing winds. These horse shelter kits will outlast wooden shelters by many years; horses just love to chew on wood. Portable barns and temporary animal protection will save you time and money. Your animals will be healthier in the shade and well-ventilated enclosures instead of out in the open sun all day. Most people put the shelters up onto either wood skids or onto drill stem-pipe skids and drag them from the ends. Skids are not supplied BNS-11105 R0 5

APPLEGATE - HORSE SHELTERS 6, 12, 15, 18, & 24 SHELTERS 2. Safety First 2. SAFETY FIRST The Safety Alert symbol to the left identifies important safety messages on the product and in the manual. When you see this symbol, be alert to the possibility of personal injury or death. Follow the instructions in the safety messages. Why is SAFETY important to you? Three big reasons: Accidents disable and kill. Accidents cost. Accidents can be avoided. SIGNAL WORDS Note the use of the signal words DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION, and NOTICE with the safety messages. The appropriate signal word for each message has been selected using the definitions below as a guideline. The Safety Alert symbol means ATTENTION, BE ALERT!, YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED. DANGER Indicates an imminently hazardous situation that, if not avoided, will result in serious injury or death. WARNING Indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in serious injury or death. CAUTION Indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. NOTICE Indicates a potentially hazardous situation that, if not avoided, may result in property damage. BNS-11105 R0 7

2. SAFETY FIRST APPLEGATE - HORSE SHELTERS 2.1. GENERAL SAFETY 6, 12, 15, 18, & 24 SHELTERS 2.1. GENERAL SAFETY Important: The general safety section includes instructions that apply to all safety practices. Any instructions specific to a certain safety practice (e.g., assembly safety), can be found in the appropriate section. Always read the complete instructional sections and not just these safety summaries before doing anything with the equipment. YOU are responsible for the SAFE use and maintenance of your equipment. YOU must ensure that you and anyone else who is going to work around the equipment be familiar with all procedures and related SAFETY information contained in this manual. Remember, YOU are the key to safety. Good safety practices not only protect you, but also the people around you. Make these practices a working part of your safety program. The most important safety device on this equipment is a SAFE user or operator. It is the user/operator's responsibility to read and understand ALL safety instructions, safety decals, and manuals and follow them before assembly, operating, or maintaining the equipment. All accidents can be avoided. A person who has not read and understood all safety instructions is not qualified to operate or use the equipment. Untrained users/operators expose themselves and bystanders to possible serious injury or death. Equipment owners must give instructions to employees before allowing them to operate or use the product. Review safety information initially and annually with all personnel who will be using the product. Use this equipment for its intended purposes only. Do not modify the equipment in any way. Unauthorized modification may impair the function and/or safety, and could affect the life of the equipment. Any modification to the equipment voids the warranty. Do not allow children, spectators, or bystanders within the work area. Have a first-aid kit available for use should the need arise, and know how to use it. Provide a fire extinguisher for use in case of an accident. Store in a highly visible place. Wear appropriate protective gear. This list includes, but is not limited to: a hard hat gloves protective shoes with slip-resistant soles protective goggles hearing protection 8 BNS-11105 R0

APPLEGATE - HORSE SHELTERS 2. SAFETY FIRST 6, 12, 15, 18, & 24 SHELTERS 2.2. ASSEMBLY SAFETY Before servicing, adjusting, or repairing powered equipment, unplug, place all controls in neutral or off position, stop the engine or motor, remove ignition key or lock out power source, and wait for all moving parts to stop. Follow good shop practices: keep service area clean and dry be sure electrical outlets and tools are properly grounded use adequate light for the job at hand Think SAFETY! Work SAFELY! 2.2. ASSEMBLY SAFETY Have 2 people handle the heavy, bulky components. Stay away from overhead power lines and other obstructions during assembly. Contact with power lines can cause electrocution. Tighten all fasteners to their specified torque before using the equipment. Do not work in high winds. BNS-11105 R0 9

APPLEGATE - HORSE SHELTERS 3. ASSEMBLY 6, 12, 15, 18, & 24 SHELTERS 3.1. PRE-ASSEMBLY 3. Assembly WARNING Before continuing, please reread the safety information relevant to this section at the beginning of this manual. Failure to follow the safety instructions can result in serious injury, death, or property damage. 3.1. PRE-ASSEMBLY 3.1.1. PLACEMENT Build shelter on well-drained land, or build the floor up to make sure it stays dry. The open side should face away from the prevailing wind. Horses do need shelter and what can be considered "adequate" will vary according to the season: In summer, a horse needs protection against sun, rain, wind, and hail. In winter, cold, snow, and wind are the elements to consider. Healthy horses with a full winter coat can stand a lot of cold as long as they are dry and out of the wind. In the summer, horses are vulnerable to flies. The size of the shelter, its location, and what it's made of are all important elements to consider. Consider herd instincts and group pecking orders when deciding on windbreak or shed design. Areas housing 1 or 2 horses that are compatible with one another will allow for an enclosed shed with 3 or 4 sides. These structures should be similar in size to recommendations for stalls: a 10 x 10 minimum per horse. The same type of structure will not work in pasture with many horses or bands of horses with large ranges in horse dominance orders. An enclosed, four-sided structure may increase injury to horses on the low end of the herd dominance order by the more dominant horses. This type of structure may be inefficient because dominant horses will keep others from having access. Horses have a very strong social order, and for safety, the shelter should be wide rather than deep. Otherwise, boss horses standing in the BNS-11105 R0 11

3. ASSEMBLY APPLEGATE - HORSE SHELTERS 3.1. PRE-ASSEMBLY 6, 12, 15, 18, & 24 SHELTERS entranceway can block other horses from going in, or a lower status horse can get trapped in the back. Owners should consider 2 or 3 of these structures spread about the area because one long, continuous structure is easily guarded by dominant horses. Structure dimensions will depend on the degree of herd dominance problems. In situations where aggressive behaviour becomes such a problem that horses need to be separated, the low end of the herd order will generally need better refuge because they are the ones that are usually in the least favourable body condition. Anything equine must be built strong enough to withstand considerable abuse. Flimsy cover will not last long and can become unsafe. 3.1.2. BEFORE YOU BEGIN Inspect parts thoroughly to ensure all parts are included in the kit. Separate hardware and layout into groups for easier identification during assembly. Assemble shelter on level ground. You will require 2 people to assemble the shelter. 3.1.3.
