WASTE MANAGEMENT COMPANY Krzysztof Krauze, Director Processing of Organic Waste City of Poznań

MAIN OPERATIONS CONDUCTED BY ZZO: Management and recultivation of a 50 hectare landfill site Production, supply, sale of electricity and heating, produced from biogas Organization of collections, recycling, and sales of bulk waste recyclables Collection of hazardous, non-hazardous and inert waste Projects contributing to the maintenance and cleanliness in the city Collection and acceptance of electrical and electronic waste equipment Environmental remediation intervention: e.g. road accidents - notified by the police or city guards Problematic waste requires specialist recycling, treatment, or utilization, and must not be placed in landfills. Therefore, ZZO s activities, place special emphasis on the management and operation of our landfill. One of our targets is to recultivate the 50 hectare site, and return it to a natural green landscape.

SEGREGATION OF RECYCLABLE WASTE IN POZNAŃ In 2010, ZZO collected segregated recyclable waste from residents in the Poznań area, achieving the following targets: 95 tonnes plastic packaging 154 tonnes paper 51 tonnes colour glass 101 tonnes clear glass

Our company distributes information leaflets with times and locations of pick-up points for this service. Alternatively, the public can easily find more information about us, through sources such as TV, radio, and our up-to-date website: www.odpady.poznan.pl GRATOWÓZ IS OUR MOBILE WASTE COLLECTION SERVICE FOR RECYCLING UNWANTED OR HAZARDOUS ITEMS. ZZO operate this service free of charge, on the first Saturday of every month. With the growing demand for recycling, our logistical challenges are met by four heavy-duty vehicles, operating 14 hours a day, Monday to Saturday.

GRATOWÓZ ACCEPTS THE FOLLOWING: used electrical and electronic equipment end-of-life batteries fluorescent lamps thermometers containing mercury old medicines paints and solvents used motor oil, hydraulic fluid, and oil filters In the first half of 2011, our mobile service collected waste in excess of 37.6 tonnes.

GRATOWISKO We have three collection points under the name Gratowisko: 28 Czerwca 1956 Street, Wrzesińska Street, and also in Suchy Las. These facilities provide residents with easy access to recycling around all areas of Poznań. Gratowisko s success is responsible for reducing tonnes of unnecessary waste streams entering the landfill site.

PEOPLE LIVING IN POZNAŃ CAN BRING THEIR SEGREGATED WASTE TO ANY OF THE THREE POINTS, WHERE ITEMS ARE ACCEPTED FREE OF CHARGE OR WITH SMALL PRICES : batteries out-of-date medicines used electrical and electronic equipment debris from renovations old paints, solvents, glue and chemicals bulky waste (old furniture, carpets) green waste (grass, leaves, branches) In the first half of 2011, the three collection points accepted waste totalling 829 tonnes.

COLLECTION SYSTEM FOR OUT-OF-DATE MEDICINE AND USED BATTERIES Our company has an agreement with the Reba Educational Program, making us the sole operator for collecting medicine and batteries in Poznań. The program offers participants bonus points that may be exchanged for prizes from a special catalogue. The system which began in pharmacies and schools, now includes shops, supermarkets, and public buildings. In the first half of 2011, we collected 8.3 tonnes of recycled batteries.

ECOLOGICAL EDUCATION Our company acts in compliance with environment protection principles, and ecological education is the responsibility of ZZO. We are continuously trying to encourage society, to support the idea of environment protection, which is possible by the following methods: Creation of educational films and mascots Organization of ecological conferences and fairs Building of our educational path Setting up of a renewable energy laboratory Organization of open days for the public Educational events and ecological courses for school children and students

ZZO DISTRIBUTES LEAFLETS, POSTERS, CALENDARS, GADGETS, EDUCATION AND INFORMATION BOOKLETS, TO ENCOURAGE CHILDREN AND ADULTS TO HAVE AN ECO-FRIENDLY ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENT.

Everyone who owns a garden, knows, the amount of grass clippings, leaves, and branch cuttings, accumulated within the growing season. In 2008, ZZO opened a composting section in Suchy Las for residents to bring their green waste for biodegradable processing.

All green waste, collected in Gratowisko points around Poznań, is delivered to the composting section in Suchy Las. Our biodegradable process operates under the Windrow System; a technique of turning biodegradable matter into compost. A complete cycle including aeration involves 3 phases: decomposition, mineralization, and humification. After 4 months of microbiological changes, fertilizer is obtained. When low contamination levels and acid characteristics are achieved, the Windrow System produces good quality humus after 6 months. Last year, we processed 6700 tonnes of biodegradable waste.

PROCEDURAL POINTS CONCERNING WINDROW COMPOSTING: green waste is chipped and stored in windrows ratio of 70% grass and/or leaves; 30-40% wood chips chips serve as structural material for self-aeration of the prism waste decomposes and heats up to 40-55 C or above high temperatures kill pests, weeds, parasites, and other pathogens temperatures over 55 C unfavourable causing loss of humidity windrow is aerated and watered once a week after 6 weeks, temperature drops below 45 C, compost starts maturing in this phase, watering is performed once every two weeks after 9 weeks, compost reaches final maturity, temperature drops to 30 C final phase no watering is necessary relative humidity of 40% is obtained compost is sieved to achieve fine grade fertilizer

Each 100 litre bag of grass costs PLN 2 (0,50 Eurocent) 1 m3 is priced at PLN 20 (less than 5 Euro) when citizen will bring to Gratowisko. 3 kg Bio-Felek fertilizer costs 1 PLN ( 0,25 Eurocent) Bio-Felek fertilizer, is suitable for all types of soil, and is recommended for areas suffering from degradation due to intense use. Bio-Felek, is ZZO s organic fertilizer, made from biodegreadable compost, and it is laboratory tested. It was approved by the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, under the Act on Fertilizers and Fertilizer Application, on the 25th of August 2010.

ON BEHALF OF THE CITY OF POZNAŃ, MYSELF DYREKTOR KRZYSTOF KRAUZE, WE THANK YOU FOR THE INVITATION.
