Everyone who owns a garden, knows, the amount of grass clippings, leaves, and branch cuttings, accumulated within the growing season. In 2008, ZZO opened a composting section in Suchy Las for residents to bring their green waste for biodegradable processing.
All green waste, collected in Gratowisko points around Poznań, is delivered to the composting section in Suchy Las. Our biodegradable process operates under the Windrow System; a technique of turning biodegradable matter into compost. A complete cycle including aeration involves 3 phases: decomposition, mineralization, and humification. After 4 months of microbiological changes, fertilizer is obtained. When low contamination levels and acid characteristics are achieved, the Windrow System produces good quality humus after 6 months. Last year, we processed 6700 tonnes of biodegradable waste.
PROCEDURAL POINTS CONCERNING WINDROW COMPOSTING: green waste is chipped and stored in windrows ratio of 70% grass and/or leaves; 30-40% wood chips chips serve as structural material for self-aeration of the prism waste decomposes and heats up to 40-55 C or above high temperatures kill pests, weeds, parasites, and other pathogens temperatures over 55 C unfavourable causing loss of humidity windrow is aerated and watered once a week after 6 weeks, temperature drops below 45 C, compost starts maturing in this phase, watering is performed once every two weeks after 9 weeks, compost reaches final maturity, temperature drops to 30 C final phase no watering is necessary relative humidity of 40% is obtained compost is sieved to achieve fine grade fertilizer
