In us, you ll find a trusted resource Oil Sands

20% increase of plant throughput at Cenovus Foster Creek in situ facility.

In Canada s oil sands, you are tapping into one of the world s largest oil reserves. With Stantec, you are also tapping into one of Canada s largest environmental and engineering firms. Since 1954, Alberta-based Stantec has been creating a community of professionals who know the environment, the technology, and the challenges. From the smallest pilot projects of 1,000 barrels per day to world class facilities operating at 300,000 barrels per day, Stantec is a trusted resource.

Creative ways to do more with less it s what we do best. In situ extraction methods such as Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) and Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS) are our core areas of focus and expertise. We ve been working on in situ facilities since the early 1990s and have experience with central processing facilities (CPF) and field facilities including pads and pipelines. Our engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM), environmental, and industrial infrastructure teams understand the technical challenges of the oil sands in situ industry. We know that retaining a professional services firm is about more than who can get the work done. It s about working with people you can rely on as trusted experts and extended members of your own team. Whether you are creating a new asset or optimizing your existing operations, Stantec s team will help you bring your idea to reality. We re also involved in oil sands mining developments and are working with the industry to address issues related to mature fine tailings, water and wastewater, and remediation and reclamation. We re committed to providing the services you need to ensure development that is responsible and sustainable meeting the energy needs of the future. In situ and mining developments are specialized areas, and our teams have the expertise and experience to address the unique challenges of both.

Early project planning minimizes impact and maximizes benefits. We ll guide you through the regulatory process, creating an application that works for you and your stakeholders. Stantec has been instrumental in the development of many oil sands mines and in situ projects. We are known for our ability to guide you through the complex federal and provincial regulatory processes. And we work with you to identify the interactions between your project, the environment, and communities, with a solution to minimize the risk. A successful EIA and regulatory application takes into account all the stakeholders and environmental concerns. We create a thorough application, working in partnership with our clients, the surrounding communities, and Aboriginal groups. A well-planned application is more likely to be approved because the issues have been addressed. For example, on the JACOS Hangingstone project, we developed an innovative approach to more meaningfully apply traditional knowledge in the EIA application. It resulted in the establishment of a consultative body known as the Aboriginal Review Group. But environmental and stakeholder requirements don t end after your project has been approved. Ongoing monitoring and regulatory compliance work must continue on to address the operational and closure needs of your assets. We help you ensure that your project and the surrounding communities values are sustained after the project has been built. Our team of environmental services professionals is more than 2,500 strong, providing you with access to tremendous breadth and depth of expertise across our network.

We design to make the most of your facilities. Sustainable capital or brownfield projects require talent and skills that can only be developed over time. We take pride in this development and our alignment with the needs of the future. At Stantec, we don t move from mega project to mega project. We ve been working with clients like Suncor and Total for more than five years, developing the skills and people who can sustain your facility after it has been built. The problems you face need the right combination of technical skills and systems in place. With an operational component and blend of classic engineering and design skills, we create a practical and real solution for our clients. Our EPCM teams develop programs that are sustainable and consistent. And they have the support of a field team who can understand the plant s health and find operational opportunities. We ve worked with Cenovus for more than three years at their Foster Creek SAGD facility, finding bottlenecks and determining the need for new equipment. Other clients such as Canadian Natural also rely on Stantec because we know their facilities. We build teams around our clients and your operating assets. Our designs are based on real project experience from your facility. $180M Total installed cost of our largest project to date.

Every project is an opportunity to learn, grow, and create a new solution.

Our track record of repeat clients is proof of our commitment to quality and relationships. Our engineering portfolio of projects started with Suncor MacKay River. Today, we have grown into mature and strong relationships with other reputable companies such as Canadian Natural and Cenovus. We continue to build our track record in existing facility work, with a long list of projects of various sizes and types. Our debottlenecking expertise has helped our clients increase production by thousands of barrels per day. For example, we helped Suncor increase production from 22,000 to 35,000 barrels per day. Cenovus Foster Creek Since 2010, we ve been providing front-end engineering and detailed design for seven areas of the central processing facility. Ultimately, Cenovus is targeting a production increase to approximately 300,000 barrels per day, with operations projects playing a key role in these plans. Canadian Natural Wolf Lake With the installation of a centrifuge system and associated supporting equipment, Canadian Natural will reduce waste and save time and money associated with maintenance. Both cyclic and SAGD technologies are used to produce approximately 80,000 barrels per day. Suncor MacKay River Since 2008, Stantec has coordinated and executed multi-disciplinary engineering and procurement services for more than 100 projects ranging in size from $50,000 to $10 Million TIC. Devon Jackfish We created a highly efficient and low capital cost desand system with no mechanical equipment, greatly reducing maintenance costs and energy usage. We ve been leading environmental and regulatory applications for the oil sands since 1993. Our team has executed multi-year, pre-and post approval monitoring programs for air, water, wildlife, vegetation and wetlands, soil, and noise, as well as comprehensive environmental management plans. We re active members of the industry, regularly contributing to oil sands publications, helping to solve some of the industry s environmental challenges. JACOS Hangingstone Since 2001, we ve been working with JACOS, providing EIA and regulatory application services. The Hangingstone Expansion project was an expansion of the demonstration project with a total production of 60,000 barrels per day. Value Creation (BP) Terre de Grace We were successful in obtaining regulatory approval for the pilot project and collection of baseline data to support a full-scale commercial project. Nabiye Expansion Project A CSS project, we managed a large multidisciplinary team in the production of 37 regulatory submissions in support of project approval. TOTAL E&P Canada Joslyn North Mine We provided EIA and regulatory application services for the mine from 2008-2010, including support and expert testimony at regulatory hearings. We are continuing to provide regulatory support services for the mine amendment, and are responsible for the execution of an ongoing site-wide environmental monitoring program. We re also working on the critical infrastructure of oil sands sites including power generation and transmission systems, water and wastewater treatment, transportation, buildings, and workforce housing.

Partnering with the community. We ve established a very successful First Nations partnership to provide environmental services to the oil sands industry. Aboriginal communities are increasingly concerned about the impact of industrial development on traditionally used lands. With the growing expectations of accountability and environmental responsibility, we can assist our clients in balancing the competitive realities with environmental protection requirements. We have the expertise through our Historical and Cultural Resources, Environmental Services, and Aboriginal Partnerships teams to work with communities to better understand the traditional use of the land in order to meet project needs, while supporting our clients and strengthening community relationships. Founded in 2003, Nu Nennè-Stantec is a partnership between the Cold Lake First Nations (CLFN) and Stantec Consulting Ltd. This partnership, majority owned by CLFN, provides environmental and cultural services to clients operating in the CLFN Traditional Territories including archeology and traditional knowledge studies, Pre-Disturbance Assessments (PDAs) and site reclamation / remediation. The success of Nu Nennè-Stantec is based on respect, honesty, integrity, and a cross-cultural awareness and integrated approach to assessment and management that combines traditional knowledge, conservation ethics, and land stewardship with strong western science and regulatory experience. Our clients receive effective assessments, management, conservation, and reclamation on traditional lands while building capacity within the Nation through job creation, technical skills training, and education. In 2012, Stantec became a certified Building Environmental and Aboriginal Human Resources (BEAHR) program trainer. BEAHR Training Programs are a series of culturally relevant, skills-based environmental training programs for Aboriginal learners (First Nation, Métis, and Inuit). Each program is community-based and inclusive of Aboriginal culture and local knowledge. The programs are designed to be short-term, employment focused, and offer practical field experience. They integrate local knowledge and offer practical field experience. 35,000 Field hours; 37 regulatory submissions; 100 field personnel; 0 lost time incidents on the Nabiye Expansion Project in the CLFN Traditional Territories.

It s the people that make the projects. That s why we create dedicated and experienced client teams that care about the work. A team with open communication and strong relationships will execute successfully. We know this from firsthand experience and pride ourselves on creating and maintaining this culture. We strive to be transparent and an integrated part of your team, not just a service provider. We organize ourselves around you and your assets to create a go-to team that you can work with confidently. The oil sands industry and your assets require a specialized knowledge base. We have spent years building that knowledge base sharing ideas, philosophies, challenges, and successes to make our team stronger. As a result, we have-long term employees who enjoy the diversity of the work they do. Our people work together with our clients to find the best solution.

Design with community in mind We re active members of the communities we serve. That s why at Stantec, we always design with community in mind. The Stantec community unites more than 13,000 specialists working in over 200 locations. We collaborate across disciplines and industries to make buildings, infrastructure, and energy and resource projects happen. Our work professional consulting in planning, engineering, architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, surveying, environmental sciences, project management, and project economics begins at the intersection of community, creativity, and client relationships.
