JOB DESCRIPTION: DESK ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION Desk Assistants (DAs) are graduate or undergraduate Residence Life Department paraprofessional staff members with direct and constant contact with students. The primary responsibility of a Desk Assistant is to act as a communication link between building staff and residents. They help answer student questions, direct phone calls, provide information, and complete various administrative tasks as assigned by their supervisor. A Desk Assistant is responsible for individual desk shifts and are hired on a semester to semester basis. Each semester their individual job performance will be evaluated in order to determine continued employment. QUALIFICATIONS: A Stephen F. Austin State University student enrolled full-time in a graduate or undergraduate degree program and in good academic standing of 2.0 (undergraduate). In good standing with Stephen F. Austin State University, the Residence Life Department, and the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities prior and throughout the period of employment. The Residence Life Department will conduct a disciplinary check to verify good standing. Staff members may not be on any type of academic or disciplinary probation or suspension throughout the period of employment. Preference will be given to students with a Residence Hall assignment, but it is not required. Preferred Qualifications:: A minimum of one semester of leadership experience and programming. JOB EXPECTATIONS: The main responsibility of the Desk Assistant is to support the Residence Life Department in attaining its goals for the residential students. The mission of the Residence Life Department is to provide a learner-centered residential environment which is conducive to the academic success and personal development of our students. The following is a summary of the significant expectations for which Desk Assistants are responsible. Communication and Role Model Desk Assistants play a crucial role in setting the tone of how the University and the Residence Life Department are perceived by students. Desk Assistants should strive to represent the University and the Residence Life Department positively to students, parents, and the general public. A Desk Assistant is expected to: Respect and maintain appropriate student and staff confidentiality at all times. Maintain ongoing communication with Residence Life staff members including: Supervisors, Assistant Hall Directors, Community Assistants, and Desk Assistants. Display a positive professional attitude and support towards students, staff, and the Residence Life Department. Conduct all aspects of life as a role model and 24-hour representative of SFASU and the Residence Life Department. This includes, but is not limited to, handling stressful situations and displaying mature judgment. Complete all other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Student Conduct Desk Assistants are responsible for consistently maintaining policies throughout the lobby and desk area and for impressing upon residents they are responsible for their own actions. Specifically, staff are expected to: Understand, support, follow, enforce, and educate students and fellow staff about University objectives, policies, regulations, and Residence Hall Community Guidelines. Responsible use of building keys and access. Misuse or loss of any keys or access may result in disciplinary action and/or termination. Be able to observe and detect unusual occurrences and/or policy violations. This could entail detecting smoke or other odors indicative of hall violations and hazardous situations. Complete all other duties as assigned by the supervisor. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Period of Employment Desk Assistants are selected through the Residence Life Department on a semester to semester basis. It is preferred that Desk Assistants live on campus (but not required), have a contract, housing deposit, and housing assignment on file in the Residence Life Department. Continued employment depends upon successful completion of tasks; positive semester evaluation by the Hall Director and exhibition of growth in and continued enthusiasm for the position. Compensation Desk Assistants are provided an hourly wage for their time worked. Time Commitment Desk Assistants must return to campus before the halls open for training each semester and must remain after the halls close to help with closing activities. Expectations of Candidates: It is preferred that Desk Assistants reside in campus housing (but not required) and they must maintain an acceptable course load without exceeding 16 hours (unless approved in advance by the Residence Life Department). All residents who live on campus must have a contract and $100 deposit on file in the Residence Life Department. Staff must maintain a cumulative and semester GPA of 2.0.
