LIQUID APPLIED ROOFING 2016 The building materials and construction industry s most trusted source for market information and insights

Liquid Applied Roofing 2016 Liquid applied roofing is a fast-growing segment of the $5.1 billion commercial roofing industry in North America. While this segment represents only 15% of the total market today, these roof coatings are primarily used in the reroof portion (including maintenance and restoration) of the market which represents over 70% of overall demand for all commercial roofing. A number of market trends support greater use of liquid applied roofing. Property owners desire low impact reroofing systems to avoid higher replacement costs and major disruptions resulting from a roof tear-off. In many applications, roof coatings can be applied for 70% less than the cost of roof replacement. Liquid applied roofing can provide up to 25 years of protection for an existing roof that needs a major repair or roof replacement while also providing other benefits such as waterproofing and sustainability through energy efficiency. These roofing systems can also contribute positively to ASTM sustainability standards as well as other initiatives such as LEED and Energy Star. These high-performance coatings, led by acrylics, silicones and urethanes are compatible with many substrates in existing roofing systems, including uncoated and coated metal; asphalt built-up membranes; polymer-modified bitumen; and single-ply membranes (EPDM, PVC, TPO and spray polyurethane foam). Increased awareness and growing acceptance of liquid applied roofing among professional contractors and building maintenance managers as not just a maintenance solution for an existing roof but as a main waterproofing solution has led to growth of this segment of the commercial roofing market. Several key drivers for increased demand of liquid applied roofing include: Sustainability. Extended life of the roof is provided by adding an additional UV protective layer and reducing the thermal expansion and contraction of the membrane. No tear-off. Roofing tear-off is not necessary, resulting in landfill diversion, less disruptive projects, and savings on tear-off labor and disposal costs. Energy savings. Cooling costs can be reduced by minimizing the heat transfer into the building and keeping it cooler in warmer climates and summer months. Cost savings. Cost benefits are realized versus tear-off and roof replacement. Also, tax benefits (considered a maintenance item) and rebates are available for these products. Application efficiency. Roof coatings are safe and easy to apply, with no torches, hot asphalt or expensive installation equipment required. 2
