Control System Objective Slide 5-1

s The objectives of a control system may be grouped into the following areas: Economic Incentive Safety Equipment Protection Slide 5-2

Economic Incentive A process parameter s effect on product depends greatly on the plant s limitations and operating condition. Production variations fall into two categories 1. Global production maximum for a given operating condition 2. Production maximum occurs at an upper or lower bound on a parameter for a given operating condition. Slide 5-3

Global Production Maximum $/HR Profit $/HR Profit Maximum Maximum $ Lost $ Lost For this case, production is greatest when the band of variation is reduced to zero and the process parameter is maintained at the value corresponding to maximum production Better Control Slide 5-4

Global Production Maximum (Cont) $/HR Profit Better Control Wrong Setpoint Maximum $ Lost To benefit from improvement in control, the loop must operate at the target that provides maximum production. The plant design conditions may be used as a guide in establishing setpoints for best operation Slide 5-5

Production Maximum at Limit $/HR Profit Maximum $ Lost For this case, maximum production is obtained by maintaining the process parameter at a limit determined by some plant limitation. $/HR Profit Maximum $ Lost How close to the limit you can operate is determined by the quality of the control Better Control Slide 5-6

Production Maximum at Limit Production improvement is obtained by operating closer to product specification or operating limit. $$ Savings Limit or Spec Target Setpoint Poor Control Better Control Time Slide 5-7

Ammonia Process Example Slide 5-8

Ammonia Plant - Synthesis Loop Pressure 3400 3300 3200 Production, Mol/Hr 3100 3000 2900 2800 Maximum Pressure Limit 2700 130 135 140 145 150 Loop pressure (atmospheres) Slide 5-11

Cost of Synthesis Pressure Variation Slide 5-12

Primary Reformer Methane Leakage Slide 5-13

Primary Reformer Temperature Control Primary Reformer TT TT TT TT TT TT Maximum operating temperature limit is determined by the material of construction Exceeding maximum temperature can result in tube rupture and shutdown of the process Slide 5-14

Cost of Variation from Minimum Leakage Slide 5-15

Safety Boiler Draft Control ID Fan Max Design Pressure Slide 5-16 PC PT -10-9 -4-3 -2-1 0 Draft Pressure, in H 2 O Normal Value FD Fan Positive Pressure Boiler draft control is used to remain negative pressure within the boiler. If the pressure were to go positive, then hot gases from the boiler could blow back through access ports on operating people

Equipment Protection Standpipe Level Control Pump Runs Dry LT 10 0% Standpipe Level 100% LC 10 SC 10 Standpipe Overflow Standpipe level must be maintained to avoid loss of liquid flow to pump. Loss of flow for an extended period of time may damage the pump Slide 5-17

Control System Benefits Balance Various techniques may be used to improve the control of a process Control System Complexity Benefits Provided As the complexity of the control system increases, so does cost for operator training and maintenance The complexity (cost) of the control system should be balanced with the benefits provided The benefits of control improvement may be influenced by market conditions i.e. value of product, cost of feedstock, energy cost Slide 5-18
