Approach Six case studies at chemical sites across Europe Technology development at Research Institutes supporting pilots for demonstration Modeling and Life Cycle Assessment Policy compliance analysis Exploitability

Demosite 1 : Dow, Terneuzen Mild desalination of various brackish raw water streams Niels Groot, Dow Benelux BV

Dow 2025 Sustainability Goals By 2025, Dow will reduce its freshwater intake intensity at key water stressed sites and its waste intensity footprint by 20 % 6 Learn more @ www.dow.com

Dow Terneuzen Quick Facts Second biggest Dow site globally 440 hectares 1,700 employees + 600 contractors 17 Plants incl. 3 Ethylene crackers 800+ different chemicals and plastics 85% of products exported Located in a Water Stressed Delta Fresh Water Annual Use is 22 Million M³ Zeeuws-Vlaanderen 1-2 Million M 3 water locally sourced Most water sourced remotely: pipeline ~120km Surface & Ground water mildly brackish

Dow strives to become independent of remote supply Annual fresh water demand of >20 million m³ Biesbosch Surface Water Dow wastewater Dow Terneuzen Fresh water supply 120 km Dow - Bioxplant Terneuzen - WWTP Replace source by: process water rainwater wastewater Biesbosch water Municipal wastewater Intern reuse (condensate) Self sufficing fresh water region Reduce water footprint

Water Balance Zeeuws-Vlaanderen Inventarized water demand and supply : Rainwater run-off (winter and summer mean) k Meetpunten Water in (10 6 m3 jaar) Water uit (10 6 m3 jaar) Hoofdwaterlopen Rain water run-off from Flanders 9

Regional Robust Water system Key attributes Surplus of 100 million m³ of brackish water is discharged annually Save scarce potable water sources by regional reuse Nature, landscape and recreation will benefit. (treated) waste water, diffuse discharges, rain water Water NEXUS Treatment wetlands E4Water Influent buffer Effluent buffer Agricultural usage Mild desalination Industrial reuse

E4Water Mild Desalination Demo at Dow/Evides premises Key characteristics: - 40-100 m³/day - Handle varying raw water streams - Produce water for reuse (< 1 ms/cm) - Identify robust technology - Max production costs 0.4 /m³ - Leverage to other users Treated waste water Collected rain water ELSTA Cooling tower BD

Pilot RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS

Winning Concept and overall conclusions Most robust treatment train for mild desalination: mix of Spuikom/Biox/WRWL pretreatment EDR product Highlights and innovations Ultra Filtration: Very reliable application for new mix of raw water streams (TRL 8) Combination of suitable pretreatment and Electro Dialysis Reversal in Mild desalination on a mix of surface water and industrial streams to produce industrial quality water (TRL 7) Combination of coagulation and UF as pre-treatment for Nanofiltration on CTBD and industrial wastewater was not sufficient Membrane Distillation is a promising technology, not economically feasible yet (TRL 5)
