CODE OF CONDUCT 1. Introduction EMLC Academy Trust expects all its employees to recognise their obligations to their academy, the public, pupils/students and other employees and to conduct themselves properly at all times. All academy staff have a duty to behave in a way that reflects positively on the academy, provides positive role models for the children and works within the law and policies set by the academy and EMLC Academy Trust. As a member of an academy community, each adult has an individual responsibility to maintain their reputation and the reputation of the academy, whether inside or outside working hours. This policy relates both to conduct at work and instances where conduct outside work has a direct relationship to the employee s duties. This includes conduct that is likely to bring the academy or Academy Trust into disrepute or raises concerns about an employee s suitability to continue to work in a position of trust. In addition to this policy, all staff employed under Teachers Terms and Conditions of Employment have a statutory obligation to adhere to the Teachers Standards 2012 and in relation to this policy, Part 2 of the Teachers Standards - Personal and Professional Conduct. There is no place for extremist views of any kind in our academies. Any extremist views, including derogatory language, displayed by staff will always be challenged and, where appropriate, dealt with in line with EMLC Academy Trust s Staff Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Policies. Where misconduct by a teacher is proven, the matter will be referred to the National College for Teaching and Leadership for their consideration as to whether to a Prohibition Order is warranted. 2. Purpose To achieve centres of excellence in education and foster good employee relations, this procedure aims to outline what behaviour is and is not acceptable. If you are unclear whether any conduct is acceptable or not it is important that you seek advice from the Principal or senior member of staff. 3. Scope This procedure applies to all employees (teaching and support staff) and volunteers within EMLC Academy Trust Academies. 4. General principles This Code of Conduct is designed to give clear guidance on the standards of behaviour all April 2017 3

academy staff are expected to observe. The following points are not exhaustive and do not replace the general requirements of the law, common sense or conduct: Staff are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and must take reasonable care of children under their supervision with the aim of ensuring their safety and welfare. Staff know and follow the Academy Trust s vision statement (http://emlcacademytrust.co.uk/about-us/). All work supports the vision and adults take responsibility for their own part of living that vision. All staff in academies set examples of behaviour and conduct which can be copied by children. Staff must therefore avoid using inappropriate or offensive language at all times. Staff must not promote or share extremist views, derogatory language or support extremism. Staff are positive role models for children at all times and must, therefore, demonstrate high standards of conduct in order to encourage our children to do the same. All staff must avoid putting themselves at risk of allegations of abusive or unprofessional conduct. Where staff have access to confidential information about children or their parents or carers, they must not reveal such information except to those colleagues who have a professional role in relation to the child. Staff treat others equally well, avoiding all forms of discrimination, with professional courtesy and respect. Staff must not seriously demean or undermine children, their parents, carers or colleagues. Staff are punctual and fully prepared for work. Staff must maintain high standards of honesty and integrity in their work and respect and safeguard academy property and resources. Staff will dress professionally and appropriately for working with children. All staff shall dress smartly and appropriately with due regard to PPE if necessary. The Principal has the final say on whether clothing and appearance is appropriate. If a staff member s clothing or appearance is not deemed appropriate, the Principal or other member of SLT will speak to the staff member concerned to discuss any concerns. Staff will follow and adhere to health and safety guidelines. Staff with first aid certificates must be able to present said certificate when requested at April 2017 4

any time. Staff must not engage in conduct outside work which could seriously damage the reputation and standing of the academy, Academy Trust or the staff member s own reputation or the reputation of other members of the academy community. Staff must exercise caution when using information technology and be aware of the risks to themselves and others. All staff will be subject to enhanced DBS checks to confirm their records. Staff must not engage in inappropriate use of social network sites, which may bring themselves, the academy, academy community or EMLC Academy Trust into disrepute. 5. Disciplinary Action Employees should be aware that a failure to comply with the Staff Code of Conduct could result in disciplinary action, including dismissal. April 2017 5
