Guide to The term can be used to describe the process by which hydraulic-cement concrete matures and develops hardened properties, over time, as a result of the continued hydration of the cement in the presence of sufficient water and heat. The term is also used to describe action taken to maintain moisture and temperature conditions in a freshly placed concrete so that the potential properties of the concrete may develop (ACI). If concrete is not cured, its strength can be reduced by up to 40% and can result in surface cracking, curling, crazing, and dusting. It is very important to cure the concrete immediately after finishing. Don t wait! Wet burlap, water spray and plastic sheets are effective methods of curing only if the concrete is kept constantly damp for 7 days. Otherwise, membrane-applied curing compounds are preferred. The main performance specification for curing compounds: ASTM C-309 Liquid Membrane Forming for Concrete. The curing compound shall not allow the concrete specimen to lose more than.kg /m² of water in 72 hours. The white pigmented compound shall exhibit a reflectance of at least 60% of that of a standard magnesium oxide reference plate. Types of curing compounds: Type 1 Clear of translucent without dye. Type 1D Clear or translucent with fugitive dye. Type 2 White pigmented. The curing compound shall also be one of the following classes: Class A no restrictions on the vehicle solids material in the curing compound typically, wax based materials. Class B the vehicle solids material in the curing compound must be all resin. According to the ASTM Committee on, no sodium silicate curing compound will meet the ASTM C-309 specifications. Water based products should be agitated or stirred before use to bring the solids back into suspension. However, do not over agitate them or use high speed mixing equipment. Always apply the curing compound uniformly at the specified application rate (typically 200 ft²/gallon, 4.9 m²/l). A major problem on most jobsites is the spraying of the curing compounds at extremely high application rates, i.e., the material is applied at 300-400 ft²/gallon, rather that 200 ft²/gallon. As a result, the quality of the concrete goes down dramatically! A good rule of thumb on flatwork is to apply the curing compound heavy enough to create a slight flood of material on the concrete surface or, as another option, apply the curing compound in two applications, one at right angles to the other. compounds will have to be removed before application of a liquid hardener, a sealer like an epoxy or urethane, or a water repellent like a silane or siloxane. Resin based curing compounds (i.e., Dayton Superior J11W) will normally oxidize and begin to wear off in 30 to 60 days. However, this process depends on the amount of sunlight and traffic the curing compound receives. Additional cleaning of the surface by high pressure water blasting (2000 psi, 13.8 MPa), light sand blasting, or chemical removal may be necessary, if the curing compound was protected from the sunlight and did not oxidize thoroughly. A good test to see if the curing compound has been removed is to place a few drops of water on the surface and see if the water is readily absorbed into the concrete. If it is readily absorbed, then additional cleaning may not be necessary. Cold Weather Alert Colder weather does not lessen the importance of proper curing techniques and materials. Cold weather requires the same, if not more, urgency for curing than in the summertime. Even when the relative humidity of the outdoor air is high, at low temperatures this translates to very low quantities of water vapor. Cold air is therefore generally dry, even at high humidity ¹. Remember, it is in the cold weather that you use the lip balm to prevent chapped lips.cold weather & low humidity dries lips. Concrete, in the cold weather and low humidity, also undergoes a loss of moisture & thus the need for proper curing techniques to prevent the loss of water that could cause distress, deterioration and esthetic problems. 1 Avoiding Injury in Cold Weather: For Humans and for Recently-Cast Concrete Kenneth C. Store in a horizontal position to prevent moisture accumulation on the drum head. Do not allow to freeze. Shelf life of properly stored, unopened containers is 18 months. APPLICATION Mixing: The Clear Resin Cure J11W should be thoroughly stirred prior to each days use. Do not thin. Do not use high speed mixing equipment. Placement: Apply immediately after all surface water has disappeared and the surface cannot be marred. Use low pressure spray, roller, or brush. For best results, a spray application is the preferred method. All application equipment and tools should be thoroughly cleaned prior to use to avoid contamination. Do not thin. Apply uniformly without puddling. DO NOT delay in applying the curing compound! For vertical applications, apply two light coats. Apply the second coat while the first coat is still wet. During vertical spray applications, use a fine spray tip and apply even coats avoiding run-downs or streaks. Clear Resin Cure J11W will normally oxidize and begin to wear off within 30-60 days after application when exposed to traffic, sunlight and weathering; additional cleaning may be necessary to completely remove the film, particularly in areas of heavy application, those areas not exposed to sunlight or in vertical applications. CLEAN UP For tools and equipment use warm, soapy water. After the product dries, Dayton Superior Citrus Cleaner J-48 or organic solvents, such as xylene, may be necessary to remove the product. LIMITATIONS The Clear Resin Cure J11W should be thoroughly stirred prior to each days use. Do not apply at temperature below 40 F (4 C). Cool, damp conditions and/or over application may extend drying and dissipation time. Packaging PRODUCT CODE PACKAGE Gallons SIZE Liters 14393 Pail 18.93 14394 Drum 208.20 1439 Tote 27 1040.99 STORAGE Store in tightly sealed original factory containers. Prevent water and dirt accumulation from tops of containers. Keep from freezing. Shelf life in unopened containers is 18 months from date of manufacture. Mixing: Stir thoroughly prior to use. Do not thin. Placement: Apply immediately after all surface (bleed) water has disappeared and the surface cannot be marred. Do not delay in applying the curing compound! Spray application is recommended. Small areas may be roller or brush applied. Clear Cure VOC J7WB must be applied uniformly and at the recommended coverage rates. Spray equipment must be capable of atomizing the product into a fine spray mist. Use a fine spray tip and keep equipment under constant even pressure. Apply uniformly without puddling. For vertical applications, apply two light coats. Apply the second coat while the first coat is still wet. Apply even coats avoiding run-downs or streaks. Properly applied, Clear Cure VOC J7WB will normally begin to dissipate and wear off within 7-10 days after application. At this time product can be removed with water under pressure, using scrubbing equipment or with Dayton Superior Citrus Cleaner J48. The ease of cleaning or the amount of time required for full dissipation is dependent upon application rate, environmental conditions and the amount of sunlight and traffic wear the surface receives. Clear Cure VOC J7WB will dissipate indoors, however dissipation will be slower indoors than outdoors as UV light will accelerate dissipation. Failure to uniformly apply the material in the manner described above may result in longer dissipation times and be harder to remove. Failure to apply uniformly may also result in the concrete having a blotchy appearance due to uneven curing. Dry time may be extended in cool and/or humid conditions, especially on interior applications. Applying too heavy of an application may result in material remaining tacky for an extended period of time. APPEARANCE Creamy Tan colored liquid. Dries from clear to white depending on application rate, timing and ambient conditions. May undergo color changes during dissipation. As dissipation occurs dust may be present on the surface. Concrete will be its natural color upon complete dissipation and removal of the Clear Cure VOC J7WB. CLEAN UP For tools and equipment use warm soapy water prior to the material drying. After the product dries, use of a Dayton Superior Citrus Cleaner J48 or organic solvent, such as xylene, may be necessary to remove the product. Page 1 of 2 File Date: 6//201
