GPS Safety Summary Buta-1,3-diene This Product Safety Summary is intended to provide a general overview of the chemical substance. It contains basic information and is not intended to provide emergency response information, medical information or treatment information. The summary cannot be relied on to provide in-depth safety and health information. This information must be obtained from the Material Safety Data Sheet ((M)SDS) for this chemical substance. Before handling or using Buta- 1,3-diene the relevant (M)SDS has to be consulted. Chemical Identity Name: Buta-1,3-diene CAS number: 106-99-0 Molecular formula: C 4 H 6 IUPAC name: buta-1,3-diene BASF brand names: buta-1,3-diene Structure For synonyms see end of document Product Description and Uses Buta-1,3-diene is a colorless gas (liquefied under pressure). It is miscible with common organic solvents, but only slightly soluble in water. The substance is flammable. Buta-1,3-diene is manufactured by extraction from crude-c 4 with the aid of a solvent and a following distillation process. Buta-1,3-diene is only used in industrial and professional settings. It is used as an intermediate in industrial settings for formulations, for rubber production and processing, for polymer production and processing, as a fuel additive and it is used as a laboratory chemical. 1

Health Information Human Health Safety Assessment Effect Assessment Acute Toxicity Irritation Sensitization Mutagenicity Carcinogenicity Toxicity after repeated exposure Toxicity for reproduction Result Virtually nontoxic by inhalation. The substance is explosive and gaseous at room temperature and pressure, therefore, skin and eyes irritation is not expected. Contact with liquid may cause burns and frostbite due to extreme cold. There is no evidence of a skin-sensitizing potential. Capable of causing genetic defects. The substance caused cancer in animal studies. Repeated inhalation exposure to large quantities may affect certain organs. Animal studies gave no indication of a fertility impairing or a developmental toxic effect at doses which were not toxic to the parental animals. Note: For more information on the health hazards of this substance and recommended protective equipment, please refer to the relevant (M)SDS. Environmental Information Environment Safety Assessment Effect Assessment Aquatic Toxicity Persistence and degradability Bioaccumulation potential Result Testing is not applicable due to the high volatility of buta- 1,3-diene. Not expected to have any significant ecotoxicological effects in the aquatic compartment. This statement has been derived from the structure of the substance. Testing is not applicable due to the high volatility of buta- 1,3-diene. Expected to be readily biodegradable in water. These statements have been derived from the structure of the substance. Not bioaccumulative. 2

Note: For more information on the environmental hazards of this substance and recommended measures, please refer to the (M)SDS. Physical/Chemical Properties Phys/Chem Safety Assessment Buta-1,3-diene is a colorless gas of mild aromatic odor. It is non-explosive, however, extremely flammable. Containers holding Buta-1,3-diene under pressure may explode if heated. Property Value Physical state Gas Melting / freezing point -108.9 C Boiling point -4.41 C Explosive limits 2 12 vol% Flammability Extremely flammable Explosive properties Non-explosive Self-ignition temperature 420 C Note: For further information, see the relevant (M)SDS. Exposure Potential Workplace exposure: Worker may come in contact with the substance in industrial settings during manufacture and transfer processes (e.g., during charging and discharging from/to vessels or large containers), during use as intermediate (manufacturing of other substances) or for preparation of formulations. Each manufacturing facility should have a thorough training program for employees and appropriate work processes, as well as safety equipment in place to limit unnecessary exposure. Safety showers and eye-wash stations should be accessible nearby. Workers should follow the recommended safety measures in the extended Safety Data Sheet (esds). Consumer exposure: There is no intended use of buta-1,3-diene in consumer products. Therefore, an exposure for the consumer is negligible. 3

Environmental exposure: Buta-1,3-diene is a gas and due to its physico-chemical properties, volatility is considered to be an important elimination route. A risk for the aquatic environment is not identified since exposure of surface waters is expected to be negligible due to the rapid evaporation. It is expected to be readily biodegradable. Buta- 1,3-diene does not accumulate in the food chain. Consequently, all identified uses are considered to be safe for the environment. Recommended Handling Measures Before handling or using this substance, please consult the relevant (M)SDS. It contains the required handling measures, emergency response information, medical information or treatment information. Regulatory Information / Classification and Labeling Regulations exist that govern manufacture, sales, transportation, use and disposal of o-xylene. These regulations may vary by city, state, country or geographic region. Information on these issues may be found in the relevant (M)SDS. Buta-1,3-diene was registered under REACH Regulation in the EU. Under GHS substances are classified according to their physical, health, and environmental hazards. The hazards are communicated via specific labels and the (M)SDS. GHS attempts to standardize hazard communication so that the intended audience (workers, consumers, transport workers, and emergency responders) can better understand the hazards of the chemicals in use. Labeling according to UN GHS UN GHS is the basis for country specific GHS labeling Signal word: Danger 4

Hazard statements: H220: Extremely flammable gas. H280: Contains gas under pressure; may explode if heated. H340: May cause genetic defects. H350: May cause cancer. Additional information 1.
