FMG- North Star Magnetite Project. Design and Construction were performed with SIM. This was the first paperless E&I project Total Plant Cost $380M. Total E&I Cost $43.5M E&I Design (SIM creation) was done by one designer 5 months The measured cost savings were E&I Engineering & Design 63% Construction 20% Systems Information Modelling: From File Exchanges to Model Sharing for Electrical Instrumentation and Control Systems Love, Zhou, Matthews (all Curtin Uni). - Currently for publication in Automation in Construction. Client s Praise No E&I Draftsmen were employed on the North Star Stage 1. No Formal E&I Drawings were produced. One DAD Designer completed the entire design in DAD. The Review Portal enabled quick transparent design reviews. ~2000 Field Devices were linked from DAD to the 3D model (back and forth). Major 11th hour design changes were resolved with the simple Clone function. The ITR system is arguably the best in the world as it is draws information from the DAD SIM and has a real-time paperless approval function. The compilation of a MDR was eliminated as all information is captured within DAD progressively.

New Horizons - Constructability Analysis The data, connections and behaviours of objects, in the SIM enable new ways of seeing the design that would be impossible on paper. A normally documented design can be virtually constructed in a SIM by importing cable schedules and some layout information. Non-conformances, errors and omissions in design can be identified and addressed before they become site issues (when rectification costs are far greater). We have recently performed just such an exercise for a major Japanese contractor engaged on an Middle East project.
Transform 2D cable schedules into a multi-dimensional SIM
Examples of Findings Cable Summary 30km of HV and LV cables within the same large substation using armoured type when not required. 870km of cables which do not have the right type of armouring. 286 cables with inconsistent sizing. 152 cables with inconsistent lengths. 76 cables connected to the wrong MCC.
Cost/Benefit of Constructability Analysis The analysis for this project required ~ 300 man-hours. The potential savings identified are tens of millions of dollars.
SIM Benefits Proven Drastic Cost & Time Savings One application for all connected systems Accuracy No data repetition, ever SIM = System Master Data for all lifetime phases Single Repository for ALL system information All system information available immediately Unique brownfields capability to create the SIM from conventional documentation Audit trail / Change Control Smaller teams - Improved collaboration Tool for Engineers, Designers and Technicians, not SIM administrators Simple to interface to other applications
