VIVERA Mineral Wl frm THERMOSELECT Prcesses The THERMOSELECT prcess accepts and efficiently prcesses cmmingle slid waste streams which can include municipal waste, cmmercial waste, refuse derived fuels (RDF), Autmtive Shredder Residues and industrial waste. THERMOSELECT Operates withut venting dust, durs r prcess gases int the envirnment Generates n bttm r fly ash Recvers and reuses all prcess water Recvers usable prducts frm waste Energy rich synthesis gas fr chemical dwn-stream prductin r electricity generatin Glass-like mineral melt fr Mineral Wl prductin Metal granulates A typical Mass Balance resulting frm Municipal Slid Waste Feedstck (MSW) is shwn in Fig. 1. 1

PAGE 2 VIVERA Fig. 1: THERMOSELECT Mass balance (typical fr MSW) Inrganic Prducts The waste feedstck cmpsitin has impact n quantity and quality f all resulting prducts: 100 000 tns f waste feedstck cntains abut 20 000 25 000 tns f minerals and metals (25%). The prtin f the metals cmmnly is discvered at 1% - 5%. The inrganic prtins f the waste, including scrap metals and glass, becme mlten in the lwer sectin f the THERMOSELECT high temperature reactr which reaches temperatures in excess f 1 800 C. The inrganic melt flws in a hmgenizatin reactr where mineral and metal cmpnents separate due t different densities. The specific weight f the mineral melt is abut 2,8 t/m 3. 2

PAGE 3 VIVERA As the metal melt mainly cnsists f irn, a density f abut 8,0 t/m 3 can be assumed. The metal melt sediments t the bttm, the mineral melt flws abve. In the hmgenizatin reactr the melt is purified thermally. The burners are perated under excess xygen cnditins t cmbust carbn particulate matter. The mlten inrganic melt allws the recvery f clean metal ally, free f cntaminatin and ready fr reuse after granulatin in a water basin. The metal prduct is dminated by its high irn cntent. The ally includes cpper, small amunts f nickel, chrme and zinc r similar. The main prtin f the inrganic material frms a glass-like mineral prduct that is nntxic, inert and usable in many ways. The chemical cmpsitin differs in dependence f the feedstck characteristics. An example is shwn in Fig. 2. Fig. 2: Typical Metal and Mineral Cmpsitin The chemical cmpsitin f the mineral prduct is cmparable t Basalt stne (vulcanite Magma), the main cmpnents t be SiO 2, FeO, CaO, Al 2 O 3, and Na 2 O. 3

PAGE 4 VIVERA Mineral Wl Manufacturing Mineral Wl is a sft material prduced frm mineral fibers. Depending n the primary material, yu distinguish between Glass Wl and Stne Wl. THERMOSELECT hmgenized mineral melt shws a similar cmpsitin as the natural stne basalt: THERMOSELECT Basaltlava Basalt Standard sample 15.5.91 Vrdereifel 1) 23955/03 2) mass % mass % mass % SiO2 47.1 45 49.5 Al2O3 8.3 18 16.2 Fe as Fe2O3 10.1 11 9.7 CaO 12.9 9.6 6.5 K2O 1.4 5.2 0.2 Na2O 2.6 3.2 4.6 MgO 3.2 6.7 7.5 MnO 0.7 0.1 0.1 TiO2 0.8 0 1.14 1) Zentralinstitut für Festkörperphysik und Werkstffrschung, Dresden 11.7.1991 2) TGL 23955/03 Gelgical Industry, Rck standard samples Basalt BM Zentrales Gelgisches Institut, Berlin 21.10.75 Stne wl fibers micrscpe Mineral wl 4

PAGE 5 VIVERA In cnventinal Mineral Wl manufacturing, the primary material becmes melted at temperatures between 1 200 C and 1 600 C. Fr stne wl, rcks like Basalt, Feldspar, Dlmite r similar are applied. The rcks mainly riginate frm stne quarries. Such interventin in the nature puts a strain n the climate balance f stne wl. Fig. 3: Adpted frm BBSR-Berichte KOMPAKT, Künstliche Mineralfaserdämmstffe 1/2011, Bundesinstitut für Bau-, Stadt- und Raumfrschung im Bundesamt für Bauwesen und Raumrdnung Melting f rcks requires a high amunt f energy between 150 400 kwh/m 3. (Other insulatin, like rigid fam frm Plystyrl needs even mre: 450 1 000 kwh/m 3.) The Basalt-like inrganics frm the THERMOSELECT prcesses already ccur in the liquid frm at the required temperature level f abut 1 600 C. The hmgenized melt is immediately available fr fiber prductin withut the need f abve shwn energy fr melting f natural stnes. The ht melt be it frm natural stnes r riginating frm THERMOSELECT is directed via a buffer tank (ven) t a fiber spinning device. In the THERMOSELECT system, the heated buffer tank takes care f feedstck variatins in quantity and cmpsitin. 5

PAGE 6 VIVERA Cmpnents like MgO, AlO r reductive material can be supplemented in rder t ensure the desired fiber prduct quality. Drp by drp the melt strikes a fast rtating centrifuge. Similar t cttn candy n a fair, fibers are expelled by rtatin f the disc. Fiber spinning Fiber prductin by a hrizntal, fast rtating disc was patented in 1931 (N. 539738 Reichspatentamt Germany). Mineral Wl prductin frm natural stnes as well as frm ht inrganic melt is prven technlgy. Mineral wl technlgy fr THERMOSELECT plants is prvided by ADVANTECH (www.advan-tech.net), a cmpany with vast experience in stne and glass wl manufacturing. 6

PAGE 7 VIVERA Depending n the final prduct chice, 0,5% 7% phenlic resin fr stabilizatin and 0,5% mineral il fr dust binding are added. Like that, a fiber fleece frms. Fr hardening it is frwarded by a chain belt thrugh a heated (abut 230 C) ven. As the wl mves thrugh the curing ven, it is cmpressed by varying the aperture f the ven. This cntrls the density, and hence the rigidity and structural strength, f the end-prduct. The curing ven heat sets the resin binder. Fiber fleece After the curing ven, facings such as aluminum fil r scrims can be applied t the surface f the stne wl accrding t prduct applicatins and/r custmer requirements. Blankets are cut int the desired dimensins. 7

PAGE 8 VIVERA Mineral wl fleece faced with aluminum fil Mineral wl flcs Mineral Wl Prperties Mineral Wl is the mst applied insulating material in the cnstructin industry. It cmbines gd thermal insulatin effects with high nise prtectin, and is nncmbustible class A 1. Mineral Wl used fr thermal insulatin is subject t the Eurpean Nrm DIN EN 13162, Directive 89/106/CEE (thermal insulating material fr buildings factry made prducts frm Mineral Wl). The thermal cnductivity f Mineral Wl is lw. The insulatin effect results frm the inclusin f air in the interspaces between the fibers. 8

PAGE 9 VIVERA Mineral Wl prves a high heat resistance and is used as fire preventin. Stne Wl has a high acustic islating ptential. Therefre it is a desired material fr nise prtectin in ceilings. Under xidizing cnditins, Stne Wl prves high thermic stability. Under reductive cnditins it sinters at abut 800 C. Stne Wl is bi-sluble in human lung and thus n health risk. Occupatinal health and safety aspects are respected during the manufacturing prcess. Glass Wl can be cmpressed Stne Wl nt r little. Islating tiles frm Stne Wl are mre bearing, but less flexible. Stne Wl shws densities frm 22-200 kg/m 3. The density has influence n wn weight f cnstructin (rf, wall) and temperature prtectin. Utilizatin purpses define prduct density. Mineral Wl is resistant against fungi, putridity, and bugs. Mdern plant grwing replaces natural sil by basalt fiber blankets r cubes in prfessinal green-huse applicatins fr industrialized planting f vegetables, fruits and flwers. The fibers imprve rt grwing, thus the plants can absrb mre nutrients. 9
