GREEN ELEPHANT HOW BIO-METHANE IS PRODUCED? Water Scrubbing Process 1. Scrubbing Tower (Methane Separation): Based on counter flow principles water is introduced from the top and simultaneously raw biogas is pressured at 7 bar from the bed of the scrubbing tower. Carbon dioxide is getting dissolved in the water and at the top of the scrubbing tower almost pure methane (approx. 97%) is collected. 2. Flash Tower (Methane Recovery): In order to maintain optimal process efficiency, water with the dissolved gases including quantities of methane is sent to the flash tower. Due to the pressure reduction dissolved quantities of methane is captured and re-circulated to the scrubbing tower. 3. Stripper Tower (Degassing Carbon Dioxide): Under atmospheric pressure carbon dioxide is released and the process water is re-circulated in the system. 26/09/2013 3

GREEN ELEPHANT POLITICAL AGENDA FOR BIO-METHANE Governmental Support for the Biogas Industry In a fast growing economy like India, the production of Bio-Methane makes a positive contribution to the environmental, social and economic sustainability. Optimal frame work for a biogas industry: 1. Classification of biogas production as an agricultural activity and grant of preferential electricity tariffs 2. Removal of import duties on machinery and equipment 3. Removal of taxes (VAT/Excise Duty) on investment goods 4. Removal of taxes (VAT/Excise Duty) on the sale of Bio-Methane 5. Adequate legal frame work for Bio-Methane 26/09/2013 9
