LEGACY REPORT ER-2895 Reissued March 1, 2004 www.icc-es.org Business/Regional Office 5360 Workman Mill Road, Whittier, California 90601 (562) 699-0543 Regional Office 900 Montclair Road, Suite A, Birmingham, Alabama 35213 (205) 599-9800 Regional Office 4051 West Flossmoor Road, Country Club Hills, Illinois 60478 (708) 799-2305 Legacy report on the 1997 Uniform Building Code, the 2000 International Building Code and the 2000 International Residential Code DIVISION: 03 Section: 03151 Concrete Anchoring HDI EXPANSION S HILTI, INC. 5400 SOUTH 122 ND EAST AVENUE TULSA, OKLAHOMA 74146 1.0 SUBJECT HDI Concrete Expansion Anchors. 2.0 DESCRIPTION 2.1 General: HDI concrete expansion anchors are drop-in anchors for use in normal-weight and structural lightweight concrete. The anchoring system is an alternative to cast-in-place anchors described in Section 1912 of the 2000 International Building Code (IBC) and Section 1923.1 of the 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC). The anchors may also be used where an engineered design is submitted in accordance with Section R301.1.2 of the 2000 International Residential Code (IRC). 2.2 Description: 2.2.1 Anchors: The anchors consist of a one-piece circular outer shell and an expansion plug. The shell has internal threads at one end and four slots cut axially on the expansion end. The internal surface of the expansion end is tapered to match the expansion plug. The shell finish conforms to SC1, Type III, of ASTM B 633. The outer shells of the HDI anchors are manufactured from steel complying with AISI 12L14. The expander plug has an oil-coated finish and is manufactured from carbon steel. See Table 1 and Figure 1 for additional details. 2.2.2 Bolts: The bolts are provided by others and shall comply with ASTM A 307, ASTM A 325, or SAE J 429 Grade 5. 2.2.3 Concrete: Normal-weight and structural lightweight concrete shall conform to Sections 1903 and 1905 of the IBC and the UBC. 2.3 Design: 2.3.1 General: Allowable shear and tension loads are as set forth in Tables 3 through 6, 8 and 9. Load factors for reduced spacings and edge distances are presented in Table 7. Allowable loads for anchors installed in normal-weight concrete and subjected to combined shear and tension loads, are determined by the following equation: where: (P s /P t ) + (V s /V t ) # 1 P s = Applied service tension load. P t = Allowable service tension load. V s = Applied service shear load. V t = Allowable service shear load Combined loads for anchors installed in structural lightweight concrete are addressed by the following equation: (P s /P t ) 5/3 + (V s /V t ) 5/3 # 1 Combined loads for anchors installed through steel deck and into structural lightweight concrete are beyond the scope of this report. The bolt or threaded rod used to attach the fixture to the HDI anchor shall be designed for allowable loads in accordance with applicable requirements in Chapter 22 of the IBC or the UBC. 2.3.2 Short-term Seismic or Wind Loading: Where permitted in the tables, allowable loads shall be permitted to be adjusted in accordance with Section 1612.3.2 of the UBC and Section 1605.3.2 of the IBC. 2.4 Installation: The anchors must be installed in holes perpendicular to the concrete surface, predrilled with drill bits complying with ANSI B212.15-1994, with the depth and diameter for each anchor size, as set forth in Table 2. The holes must be cleaned with compressed air of all cuttings. The anchor must be placed with the anchor embedment as noted in Tables 3 through 6, 8 and 9, and set by inserting the expansion plug into the anchor shell and driving the expansion plug with a setting tool and hammer. The setting tool shall be driven into the anchor until contact is made between the shoulder of the setting tool and the top of the anchor, when proper expansion occurs. A setting tool specific to each anchor is provided by Hilti, Inc. See Table 2 for setting tool designations and Figure 2 for additional details. Bolts described in Section 2.2.2 are threaded into the anchor and tightened with a torque not exceeding the values noted in Table 2. Concrete edge distance and anchor spacing are specified in Tables 3 through 6, 8 and 9. ICC-ES legacy reports are not to be construed as representing aesthetics or any other attributes not specifically addressed, nor are they to be construed as an endorsement of the subject of the report or a recommendation for its use. Page 2 of 6 ER-2895 2.5 Inspection: When special inspection is required, compliance with Section 1701 of the UBC or Section 1704 of the IBC is necessary. inspection in accordance with Section 1704 of the IBC shall be provided under the IRC when special inspection is specified in Table 2. The special inspector must be on the jobsite continuously during anchor installation. The building official shall receive a report, from an approved special inspector, that includes the following details: 1. Anchor description, including the anchor product name, nominal anchor and bolt diameters, and anchor length. 2. Hole description, including verification of drill bit compliance with ANSI B212.15-1994, hole depth and cleanliness. 3. Installation description, including verification of concrete compressive strength by ASTM C 42 methods and verification of anchor installation and location (anchor setting, spacing, edge distance, slab thickness, anchor embedment, and bolt tightening torque) in accordance with Hilti s published installation instructions and this report. 2.6 Identification: Each anchor shell is embossed with the company name (Hilti) and the anchor diameter designation which corresponds to the bolt diameter. In addition to this information, labels on the anchor packages bear the HDI product designation, the catalog number and the evaluation report number (ER-2895). The packaging for the anchors also bears the name of the inspection agency (Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.). 3.0 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED Data in accordance with the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Expansion Anchors in Concrete and Masonry Elements (AC01), dated April 2002, and quality control manuals. 4.0 FINDINGS That the HDI Concrete Expansion Anchors described in this report comply with the 1997 Uniform Building Code, the 2000 International Building Code and the 2000 International Residential Code, subject to the following conditions: 4.1 Anchor sizes and dimensions are as set forth in this report. 4.2 The HDI Concrete Expansion Anchors are installed in accordance with Section 2.4 of this report. 4.3 Calculations and details demonstrating compliance with this report shall be submitted to the building official for approval. 4.4 The use of anchors is limited to installation in uncracked concrete. Cracking occurs when f t > f r due to service loads or deformations. 4.5 The HDI Concrete Expansion Anchors are used to resist dead loads and live loads. The HDI Concrete Expansion Anchors are permitted to be used to resist short-term loads, such as those resulting from wind or earthquake, when installed in normalweight concrete (see Tables 3 and 4) and structural lightweight concrete (see Tables 5 and 6). Use of HDI Concrete Expansion Anchors to resist shortterm loads, such as those resulting from wind or earthquake, when installation is through steel deck and into lightweight concrete (see Tables 8 and 9) is beyond the scope of this report. 4.6 Anchors are not permitted for use in conjunction with fire-resistive construction. Exceptions would be: Anchors resist wind or seismic loading only. For other than wind or seismic loading, special consideration is given to fire exposure conditions. 4.7 Use of anchors is limited to dry, interior locations. 4.8 Since an ICC-ES acceptance criteria for evaluating data to determine the performance of expansion anchors subjected to fatigue or shock loading is unavailable at this time, the use of these anchors under these conditions is beyond the scope of this report. 4.9 The Hilti HDI Concrete Expansion Anchors are manufactured by Hilti, Inc., at their facility in Zhan Jiang, Guangdong Province, People's Republic of China, with quality control follow-up inspections by Underwriter's Laboratories Inc. (AA-668). This report is subject to re-examination in two years.
