Importance of Food Safety to Feed the Future Kelley Cormier, USAID/BFS/MPI Farmer to Farmer Partners Meeting December 4, 2015
Importance of Food Safety 1) Advances Trade 2) Protects Public Health 3) Enhances Food Security and Nutrition
Advancing Trade Producing food products that meet regional trade standards will improve the ability of developing countries to earn foreign currency and make quality, safe food available globally.
Protecting Public Health Reducing incidences of food-borne diseases, which are a leading cause of illness and death worldwide through the ingestion or handling of food contaminated by bacteria, viruses, parasites, chemicals, biotoxins, is protective of public health.
Enhancing Food Security and Nutrition Implementing measures to prevent contamination along agricultural value chains helps to ensure the availability of safe foods, thereby enhancing food security and nutrition.
