Building a circular economy together Kuopio Waste Treatment Center

The area of Kuopio Waste Treatment Center is transforming into an industrial area that recovers waste materials for the benefit of society. Kuopio Waste Treatment Center helping you to conserve natural resources For several years now, Kuopio Waste Treatment Center has invested in the conservation of natural resources and changed its operating methods accordingly. Waste materials are processed, temporarily stored and forwarded for reuse in the form of both materials and energy. We make use of approximately 90% of the waste we receive. The large volume of waste allows for the efficient use of waste and the development of new business operations thereby. The operations employ roughly 50 people. The area spans a total of 140 hectares, of which approximately 25 ha are in active use. About ten companies run their operations from the area. 1. Pikkukukko, i.e. sorting area for small deliveries 2. Ekokem s reception station for deliveries of hazardous waste 3. Scale 1 4. Scale 2 and office 5. Storage area 6. Compost area 7. 3 Jätekukko is a waste management company owned by municipalities and tasked with producing waste management services for its customers. The wide network of services comprises efficient and centralised transportation services, locally operating waste stations and Kuopio Waste Treatment Center with its range of services. The network is supplemented with collection points for recyclable waste (ekopiste), collection sites for hazardous waste and information services for households. Jätekukko recovers the material in waste for reuse, thus replacing lost natural resources. The waste station receives some 150,000 tonnes of waste every year. Unto Juutilainen (from the left) and Jukka Pitkänen from the employment office of the city of Kuopio exploring the many services of the waste treatment center. Also in the photo are Eeli Mykkänen from Kuopion Biotehdas with Arto Ryhänen, Pekka Hyvärinen, and Leena Pulkkinen from Jätekukko.

Pikkukukko for small deliveries Those who deliver small amounts of waste can do so at Pikkukukko, which receives waste which, due to its size or composition, cannot be left in the waste bins of properties. Such waste includes wood, metal, gypsum, roofing felt, flexible intermediate bulk containers, concrete, brick, porcelain, energy waste and residual waste. Some 90% of waste that undergoes precise sorting can be utilised. The area of Pikkukukko also houses Ekokem s reception station for hazardous waste, which also accepts discarded electrical appliances and electronics. Pikkukukko serves roughly 35,000 customers every year. We save natural recources by improving our customers material and energy efficiency as well as by integrating safety and environmental sustainability into our own operations in Finland and Sweden. www.ekokem.fi Ekokem, Kuopio: Kaatopaikantie 316 and Selluntie 142

Scale services Kuopio Waste Treatment Center has two weighing solutions provided by Tamtron. These are used for the weighing of loads carried by heavy vehicles and for internal moving. Scale 1 is a long self-service scale at which customers record their loads with the help of smart cards. It is particularly suitable for articulated vehicles. Scale 2 is located next to the office. It is operated by the staff, who provide waste deliverers with help when necessary. Both scales are at the disposal of the area s operators. The scale services are also provided for external operators. TRUCK SCALE SYSTEMS Professional s choice Tel. +358 9 4130 0400 http://tamtrongroup.com

Environmentally friendly and sustainable Jätekukko carries out the collection and processing of waste, and its delivery for reuse, in an environmentally conscious manner. The waste centre s extensive environmental monitoring covers waters, gases, air quality and noise. Water monitoring The waste centre takes part in the joint monitoring effort of the waters of Heinälamminrinne and Hepomäki as one of a total of nine operators. The joint monitoring programme covers 80 sampling locations, of which the waste centre is responsible for 39. The waste centre takes 111 samples a year from the surface, ground and waste waters in its area. The samples undergo 29 different analyses. The waters of the permanent disposal area and asphalted field areas are directed to the Lehtoniemi sewage treatment works of Kuopion Vesi via an equalising tank. The total volume of waste water produced in a year amounts to approximately 110,000 m3. Gas monitoring The organic material in landfills decomposes in the oxygenfree conditions, forming landfill gas. The gas is composed of 55% of methane, 40% of carbon dioxide and several other compounds. The odour nuisance often associated with waste centres is caused by a small amount of sulphur compounds. The gas measuring system is measured and adjusted on a monthly basis. The gas is directed to the Pitkälahti heating station of Kuopio Energy. The fuel power of 2 MW produces approximately 15,000 MWh of thermal energy. The amount of gas energy produced by Kuopio Waste Treatment Center is equal to the energy demands of 900 single family dwellings a year. Other monitoring The waste centre s air quality and noise levels are monitored according to the area s joint monitoring standards. In addition, the monitoring extends to an environmental panel consisting of the centre s neighbours and composed of 20 people. 7 The quality of recovered fuel produced at the waste centre is assured by samples analysed in a laboratory on a regular basis. The amount of fuel produced at Kuopio Waste Treatment Center allows for heating 10,000 single family dwellings a year. Waste processing The processing of mixed waste Mixed waste consisting of biodegradable waste, metals, glass and board sorted by households or residents is ideal for the production of district heat. The waste centre processes approximately 40,000 tonnes of mixed waste a year. The waste is crushed and sifted for incinerable waste consisting of plastic, for example. The incinerable waste is recovered for reuse as energy. In addition, roughly 5,000 tonnes of mixed, uncrushed waste a year is delivered for energy recovery. Mixed waste is placed in permanent disposal only in exceptional situations. Once the eco power station of Riikinvoima Oy becomes operational, mixed waste will be delivered there for energy recovery. The processing of construction and energy waste Pure energy waste is collected from both stores and at the waste centre s Pikkukukko and other waste stations. Construction waste is furthermore sorted for energy waste, concrete and metal. The energy waste is delivered to power stations. The volume of waste processed in the waste centre every year amounts to approximately 20,000 tonnes. The processing of wood waste The waste centre receives about 10,000 tonnes of wood a year. The wood is crushed, and the crush is delivered for energy recovery. Permanent disposal The amount of permanently disposable waste has declined in step with the increase of recovery, and will end almost completely once the prohibition on dumping organic waste in landfills enters into force. Waste that does end up in permanent disposal includes asbestos, wool insulation, PVC and any waste not recovered during waste processing. 8 The recycling of rock aggregate conserves natural resources, and its local use decreases carbon dioxide emissions. The processing of rock aggregate The aggregates area receives asphalt pieces, concrete, brick, slabs, porcelain and rocks. All aggregates are crushed. The asphalt crush is sold to asphalt producers as secondary raw material. Concrete waste is received in the form of either pure concrete or as a mixture of concrete, slabs and porcelain. The crushed concrete is used for the waste centre s own construction needs or sold for other construction. First rate soil from Kekkilä s topsoil station In addition to crushed asphalt and concrete, the waste centre s area contains an outlet that sells topsoil. Kekkilä s topsoil station in Kuopio produces soil mixtures from diverse raw materials. Production also makes use of various recycled raw materials according to availability, including composts, recycled moraine and bark residue supplied by the forest sector. Kekkilä s topsoil station is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or per agreement. 10 Energy and fertilisers from biodegradable waste Kuopion Biotehdas processes biodegradable waste in its modern and environmentally friendly biogas process. The plant is part of the nation-wide Biotehdas network being built in Finland by Biotehdas Oy. The biogas plant processes organic waste into renewable energy and fertiliser products. The production process takes 3 to 4 weeks. The plant processes 60,000 tonnes of municipal bio-waste, sludge, the food waste from shops and restaurants and food industry waste a year. The plant produces 34,000 MWh of biogas energy every year. This is equal to the energy consumption of roughly 1,500 detached houses. The gas is delivered to the motor power plant of Kuopio Energy via a pipeline. At the power plant, it will be turned into electricity and district heat. Biotehdas is also a major producer of fertilisers, given that the plant produces 350,000 kg of nitrogen and 140,000 kg of phosphorus each year for the farms of Northern Savonia. Biotehdas provides its processing services extensively throughout the region of Eastern Finland. 11 The local energy company processes gases into renewable energy Since 2003, Jätekukko and Kuopio Energy have collaborated in the recovery of landfill gases for the purpose of Kuopio Energy s district heat production. Since 2014, Kuopio Energy has processed the biogas supplied by Kuopion Biotehdas into electricity and district heat. The majority of the gases built up in the area are directed to the Pitkälahti motor power plant and boiler of Kuopio Energy, located at a distance of about five kilometres, for the production of electricity and heat. The electricity and heat produced by the gases cover the annual heating energy needs of more than 2,000 detached houses. Kuopio Energy is an energy group owned by the city of Kuopio. The group produces, buys, distributes and sells electricity and district heat. Its own energy production is based on the combined production of heat and power, relying extensively on fuels from Northern Savonia. Bright Power
