Lionel AEC Nuclear Reactor Owner s Manual 72-4294-250 5/09

Congratulations on your purchase of the Lionel AEC Nuclear Reactor. The nuclear reactor is constructed of die-cast, stamped metal and injection molded plastic and features a powerful can motor and one solenoid for years of reliable operation. The nuclear reactor can be placed on any Lionel O or O-27 gauge three-rail layout and is designed to operate at 12-18 volts alternating current. Table of contents Installation of the Nuclear Reactor 3 Wiring the Nuclear Reactor 4 Operation of the Nuclear Reactor 5-6 Operating the Nuclear Reactor in Command Control 7 Lionel Limited Warranty Policy & Service 8 The following Lionel marks may be used throughout this instruction manual and are protected under law. Installation of the Nuclear Reactor Your nuclear reactor can be placed along side of any straight stretch of track at least two track sections in length on your layout. No special sidings or spur lines are necessary since the loading and unloading are done at the same point in the track, in front of the reactor. This track section should be located far enough away from the edge of the base so that any of your engines may pass by without striking the base itself. A 3/4 distance between the edge of the track tie and the edge of the base is advised for O gauge track. A 1/4 distance between the edge of the roadbed and the edge of the base is advised for FasTrack. Contained in the packaging of your nuclear reactor is the following: 1 bag of raw material (Metal Balls) 1 bag of radioactive isotopes (Glow-in-the-dark Balls) 2 containment cups 1 controller 2 green insulated wires Please see the section labeled Operation of the Nuclear Reactor for further instructions for these items. Your nuclear reactor works with any Lionel 027 Gondola. To ensure you have the proper distance from the track, start by placing a Lionel gondola on the track centered to the magnetic arm. Now, check the switch to make sure that it is in the MANUAL position (see diagram below) and manually wind down the arm to ensure that the magnet is in the center of the gondola. If not, adjust the reactor to the proper alignment. Note! When you move the magnetized arm switch from automatic to manual mode, the magnetized arm will fall into its lowest position. You may want to hold the magnetized arm while switching movement modes. Figure 1. Installing the Nuclear Reactor 3

Wiring the Nuclear Reactor Your nuclear reactor will operate best from 12-18 VAC. It can be powered with track power or a separate accessory power supply. It is possible to operate your nuclear reactor any number of ways. Your nuclear reactor will operate with an SC-2 Accessory Controller (sold separately). Your SC-1 cannot handle the amperage requirement. When hooking up your reactor to an SC-2, the controller (included) is not required. Please see the section labeled Operating the Nuclear Reactor in Command Control for complete wiring instructions. To connect your included controller to your reactor, simply follow the following color-coded system. Connector Post 1 Post 2 Post 3 Wire Color White Red Black All of these wires come from the controller. The wires have been pre-stripped, so you will need to simply connect the wire to the appropriate thumbscrew post. To connect the wires to the thumbscrew posts, remove the nut from the post and place the bare wire end through the hole located in the post. Replace the nut and tighten to secure. You will also notice that we gave you a long length of wire. If you would like to reduce the length, start by removing the shrink-wrap from around the wires. Once this is removed, then you can cut and strip the wires to your desired length. Your next step is to wire your nuclear reactor to your transformer. We have placed a hole through the sidewall to run your insulated wires through for connecting to the transformer. Start by taking one of the green insulated wires and connect it from one of the thumbscrew posts located on the side of the box to U terminal of track power or a separate accessory power supply. Finally connect your last insulated wire to the other thumbscrew post to the A terminal of track power or a separate accessory power supply. Your nuclear reactor is now wired for operation in a conventional environment. To operate your nuclear reactor in a Command Control environment, please see the section labeled Operating the Nuclear Reactor in Command Control. Figure 4. Wiring the Nuclear Reactor 4

Operation of the Nuclear Reactor Now that your nuclear reactor is installed and wired, you are almost ready to begin loading and unloading fun. Included in the packaging are radioactive isotopes that need to be loaded prior to operation. There is a tray sticking out of the back of the sphere. Using one of the included cups, pour all of the isotopes into the tray until full. Try to make sure this is done before your friends come over. Finally, place one of the empty cups under the chute located on the left side of the sphere. This will capture the metal balls after the magnetized arm loads them. On the back of the sphere just under the tray to load the isotopes, there is a switch. This switch is used to turn the lighting on and off. Make sure that this switch is in the ON position before operation if you would like to see the lighting. Finally, before you turn the magnetized arm on, make sure that the switch for the magnetized arm is in the AUTOMATIC position if you would like to use the controller. You can crank the arm by hand, but this is used primarily for testing alignment of your nuclear reactor to the track. Figure 2. Loading the Nuclear Reactor with radioactive isotopes Lights ON OFF Figure 3. Turning the lights on in the Nuclear Reactor 5

Operation of the Nuclear Reactor (continued) Now you can start by pulling your gondola up to the front of your nuclear reactor so that the magnetized arm is centered to your gondola. When your gondola is in position, you can begin unloading the gondola with the magnetized arm. Moving the LOADING switch to the ON position does this. Your magnetized arm will begin picking up your raw material and loading it into the reactor. You will know that power is going to your nuclear reactor when the lighting inside of the sphere begins. Once you have unloaded your gondola, move it over so that it is centered to the unloading chute. When you press the UNLOAD button, the tray will open and dump glowing radioactive isotopes back into your gondola to be hauled away. 6

Operating the Nuclear Reactor in Command Control Your Nuclear Reactor can be used in a Command Control environment with the use of an SC-2. For wiring your nuclear reactor to a SC-2, please follow the wiring instructions below. In order to run your reactor in a Command Control environment with the use of an SC-2, we recommend that you begin by connecting the controller as described in the wiring section. After your controller is wired, connect an insulated wire (included) from one thumbscrew post on the back wall of the hook-up area to the Accessory 1, left, position (or the next available momentary position on the SC-2). Please see the diagram below. Connect another insulated wire from the other thumbscrew post on the back wall to the A terminal of your accessory power supply. Finally, run the last wire from the U terminal of your accessory power supply to the common (ground) post on your SC-2. You can now use the AUX 2 button on your CAB-2 remote to turn the reactor on or off. You will still need to use the included controller to operate each function of your reactor. For the more advanced user of the SC-2, please note that the controller can be replaced with the SC-2. The post labeled 1 is for loading. The post labeled 2 is the common (ground) post. The post labeled 3 is for unloading. For more information regarding the use of the SC-2, please refer to your SC-2 Switch and Accessory Guide (672-2980-250). Figure 5.
