INTRODUCTION 3 WE GET HEAVY WEIGHTS MOVING WHATEVER THEIR SHAPE OR SIZE. Hafen ESSEN: GOOD FOR YOUR GOODS Historic stroke of luck for the logistics business When Bischof Altfried von Hildesheim founded the convent of Essen in the year 851 A.D. he probably did not expect that he was at the same time laying the foundation stone for a location which, from the present-day point of view, could not be more ideal for logistic purposes. A lot of water still was to flow under the bridges across the Ruhr before Essen became what it is today. But the favourable location made sure that the original village settlement would one day grow into a major city with a current population of around 571,000 and thus become a central location for the port, which, today, is known as Hafen Essen. 1.2 million square metres the area of the port of Essen Hafen Essen a central distribution centre for goods The construction of the Rhine-Herne canal and the operational start-up of Hafen Essen optimised the infrastructure of the region, which was already good. With its obstacle-free links to rail and road the port of Essen quickly developed into a central hub for the transport of a wide range of bulk goods. These could be heavy goods which many times exceed the weight of even an elephant, or wet and dry bulk cargo Hafen Essen provides ideal conditions for all of them.

4 LOCATION WE OFFER THE GATEWAY TO THE WORLD RIGHT ON YOUR DOORSTEP. THE RIGHT LOCATION FOR YOUR GOODS Well thought-out infrastructure The port of Essen is located in the heart of the Ruhr region. With a population of more than five million and an area of approx. 4,435 square kilometres it is the largest conurbation in Germany and the fifth biggest in Europe. Many companies and corporate groups, a lot of them global players, have made the region their base. No wonder, because the infrastructure is without equal and provides these companies with clear competitive advantages due to target markets within easy reach a fact to which Hafen Essen with its excellent transport links makes a strong contribution. From Hafen Essen to the world Companies that do business internationally need international connections not just personal connections but also transport links. Hafen Essen corresponds exactly to these needs. The waterways linking to the North Sea, thus the so called ARA ports (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp), as well as to the Baltic and Mediterranean Sea, open up the gateway to the whole world. By the way, only approx. 35 % of all goods which are transported are urgent, which makes waterways the ideal mode of transport for the remaining cargo. No traffic jams, no overloaded rail networks. For just-in-time transport. 6 TRANSPORT LINKS THE CENTRAL HUB FOR EVERYTHING THAT NEEDS MOVING. IDEAL TRANSPORT LINKS FOR YOUR GOODS Trouble-free transport options right on the doorstep We make it easy: for example heavy-goods transports have obstacle-free access to the A 42 motorway only a kilometre away. Two further motorways, the A 2 and the A 40, are also only a stone s throw from Hafen Essen, together with the B 224 major road. The port s own rail network is connected to the Deutsche Bahn AG rail network via the Essen-Vogelheim station, providing the option of rail transport for arriving or departing goods. All heavyweight arguments in favour of our port. 1 kilometre the obstacle-free distance to the nearest motorway

RAIL OPERATIONS 11 AT OUR PORT THE TRAIN IS READY AND WAITING FOR YOUR SHIPMENT. GETTING YOUR GOODS ON THE RIGHT TRACK The port s own rail facilities ensure rapid transport The word port normally first suggests shipping rather than railways. This does not apply in Essen, where the port acts not just as a docking location for ships but also a railway station for the port s own rail facilities. Two diesel locomotives and 30 wagons are available for transporting goods across the port s own 20-kilometre rail network with links to the Deutsche Bahn AG rail network via the Essen-Vogelheim station, and from there to any destination which can be reached by rail. Or of course by goods train in the other direction to Hafen Essen. Punctually and right alongside the vessel. 20 kilometres is the length of the port s own rail network Equipment Length of rail network: 20 km, connection to Deutsche Bahn AG at the Essen-Vogelheim station. 12 STORAGE AREAS WE VE GOT ROOM FOR EVERYTHING YOU WISH TO STORE. STORAGE FACILITIES FOR YOUR GOODS Individual and ideally suited to the goods Ports have always been a transhipment location for goods of all kinds. Many goods need to be stored on the spot for long or short periods of time. This means that space is required often a lot of space. Hafen Essen offers 50,000 square metres of uncovered storage space, concrete bunkers with an overall capacity of 450 cubic metres and steel silos which can hold 875 cubic metres, guaranteeing the secure storage of your goods. And of course Hafen Essen is highly flexible, enabling storage areas to be individually designed and equipped to customer requirements. 1 million square metres of the port area is rented or leased Storage capacity Concrete bunkers (3 x 150 m 3 ): 450 m 3 Steel silos (5 x 175 m 3 ): 875 m 3 Uncovered area: 50,000 m 2, of this 1,750 m 2 storage area for earth types of up to LAGA Z2 Your contact person for uncovered storage Thomas Schmitz, deputy port director Tel.: +49 201 800-2920 Fax: +49 201 800-2909 E-Mail: thomas.schmitz@stadtwerke-essen.de

InternationalitY 13 WE KNOW ALL THE ROUTES WHICH MAKE A PLAYER A GLOBAL PLAYER. INTERNATIONAL TRANSPORT FOR YOUR GOODS Connected to the world s markets In Germany the inland waterways measure 7,300 km, 75 % of them rivers and 25 % canals. Via ports such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg, Bremen or Bremerhaven freight can shipped to the seven seas. From Hafen Essen to the rest of the world or from anywhere in the world to Hafen Essen a window to the world in the real sense! Full service and lots of good ideas To make sure that using the port of Essen as a transhipment location is as uncomplicated as possible we offer our customers an all-round service which saves both time and wear and tear on the nerves.
