What is it? Microsoft Publisher is a desktop publishing program. You can make a variety of publications with Publisher, including: brochures, business cards, invitations, newsletters, and coupons. Desktop Publishing is a name that originated when computers began to be used for publishing a computer fits on a desktop, as opposed to the large, heavy equipment that was once used for publishing:

Typography:

Sans-Serif versus Serif Font Faces Sans-Serif font faces are plain and do not have decorations. These may be easier to read on a computer screen. W E B Serif font faces have decorations. These may be used to draw attention to certain areas of the Web page, like the business name and slogan. W E B WEB

Masthead The masthead is the top area of a document that usually contains important identification information, like the business name or newspaper name, slogan, date, edition number, etc. For a business, you have a chance to establish a sense of brand in this area viewers should be able to get a strong idea of what the business is about.

Branding / Brand Consistency Branding The process involved in creating a unique name and image for a product in the consumers' mind, mainly through advertising campaigns with a consistent theme. Branding aims to establish a significant and differentiated presence in the market that attracts and retains loyal customers. From: Brand Consistency Brand consistency is the aim of keeping a common design approach to all of a company s communications including brochures and business cards.

Branding / Brand Consistency Examples

Branding & Logos A logo is a great way to establish brand identity. Some logos are quite memorable to consumers. For our assignments we will not be constructing new, original logos. However, one technique you can utilize is to put text in front of an image, like below:

Branding & Logos Just place one object on top of another. Then, adjust the stacking order using the arrange group in the home tab. It will adjust the stacking order of the object you have selected:

Templates There are many templates available in Publisher:

Templates For our brochure assignment use the basic template available at the course website. Modify the content to match your small business idea. Add images related to your small business idea: It is a basic two page brochure.

Brochure Assignment I like to use Text Boxes to align everything (for the brochure and business card): Add your own images using the Insert tab: Add a coupon and advertisement using the Building Blocks group in the Insert tab: Make sure to add your own text to the coupon!

Brochure Assignment Other interesting elements are available in the Building Blocks group:

Brochure (10 Points) For Your Publisher Assignment You ll Need to Make a Brochure and Business Card: A professional brochure for a business of your choice. Use the same business name and slogan as the PowerPoint assignment and create a brochure promoting the company s key products or services. Also, it could be a menu for a restaurant. It is required to use this brochure template: Use a variety of images from the internet. Use a complementary harmony. Experiment with a variety of font faces, but settle on just a couple to use. Follow other directions given in class. Look at many examples online of brochures before you begin. This completed brochure is worth 10 points. Print and fold the brochure and turn in at the start of the final meeting time. B/W print is okay. Email the Publisher file to me before the start of the final meeting time. Download template at course website.

What should be in a professional business brochure? The content will vary depending on the purpose of the brochure, but brochures may include: Discounts or specials Cutout coupon Customer testimonials Simple Charts (You could take a screenshot of an Excel chart)

Business Card (5 Points) For Your Publisher Assignment You ll Need to Make a Brochure and Business Card: A professional business card that is for the fictitious role you play in the business you created for the slideshow and brochure. You may use any business card template available in Publisher. Experiment with a variety of font faces, but settle on just a couple to use. Follow other directions given in class. This completed business card is worth 5 points. Print the business card and turn in at the start of the final meeting time. B/W print is okay. Email the Publisher file to me before the start of the final meeting time.

What should be on a professional business card? Name Job Title Mailing Address Phone Number Email Address Company Logo Social Media Account URLs Web Site URL Also, business cards can be customized for specific events. If you are going to a conference related to a certain subject, perhaps the business card you hand out at that event displays information specifically tailored for the people you are giving the card to (for example, you may change the design, imagery, or social media links).

Publisher Assignment Grading: I will be looking for: Branding and Brand Consistency. Excellent use of imagery. Attention to details. A creative approach to the assignment.
