Enhancing existing processes

Metal belt technology for paper and board calendering Application metal belt technology for paper and board making Benefits less raw material needed due to increased bulk and stiffness increase of production by upto 40% over 700 million extra 1-liter milk cartons can be produced from fiber saved in a 300.000 ton board machine improves product quality 8

Spray technology for sizing application Application starch sprayed directly to the web high efficiency applied first for containerboards Benefits improved strength properties reduced life cycle cost increased production capacity 9

Innovations in biomass utilization

Gasification: Lahti Energia Oy, Lahti, Finland Plant output: 50 MWe and 90 MWth (world s largest) Waste is turned into combustible gas, which is cooled, cleaned and combusted in a high-efficiency gas boiler to produce steam for a steam turbine High- efficiency conversion of recycled waste to energy and reduction of fossil fuels Start up: April 2012 11

Bio oil: Pyrolysis for bio oil production, Fortum, Joensuu, Finland Demonstration plant to produce bio oil, by pyrolysis, from forest residue and other biomasses Bio oil can be used instead of heavy fuel oil Annual production 50,000 tons from 225,000 m3 of forest residue and sawdust Helps reduce CO2 emissions by 59,000 tons per year Turnkey delivery, start-up in autumn 2013 12

Lignin extraction Application extract lignin for biorefinery production and replacement of fossil fuels Benefits increase in pulp mill production extracted lignin can be dried and used as fuel replacing oil or natural gas lignin can also be used as rawmaterial for various chemicals and in a longer perspective low cost carbon fibres 13

Nanocellulose: paper and board applications Application Potential to create new paper and board features New fiber-based composite materials for packaging and construction applications Optical, electronic, sensing, thermal, surface texture and antibacterial materials Benefits Reinforcing additive Less fibers or lower quality fibers Improved barrier properties 14

Summary We believe that pulp, paper and power industry has a bright future We work together with our customers in enhancing existing process We add value into biomass utilization by developing new processes for our pulp, paper and power customers 15

Thank you!
