The Motorway of the Sea between Italy and France Paul Kyprianou 1 GLD Lines
THE CURRENT MoS IN THE MED Extensive network thanks to new regular services introduced in recent years, mainly in the Western Mediterranean & the Adriatic Sea; More sophisticated services thanks to modern & technologically advanced tonnage deployed; Overcapacity in some routes (ex: trailer capacity almost doubled in the last 5 years in Italy, 50% loading capacity used). 2 Concentration process underway. SSS: 39% of intra EU transport
THE MoS ROLE IN TRANSPORT IN THE MED Improved competitiveness thanks to economies of scale generated by massive acquisitions of new tonnage and to synergies through investments by operators in shore facilities (ex: port terminals, logistics companies) Improved services thanks to: Higher flexibility & speed of vessels Improved reliability & frequency Part of the intermodal chain A means to improve the competitiveness of road transport 3

ADVANTAGES OF THE SERVICE Frequent & reliable service at fixed day and hours; Competitive rates & transit time; Modern vessel deployed with full confort offered; Reduced wear of vehicles; Possibility for drivers to relax before resuming their trip; Avoidance of the Alps crossing; Reduced risk of accidents & fines; Reduced traffic & air pollution. 9
VOLUMES TRANSPORTED (2005-2007) 60.000 50.000 40.000 30.000 20.000 2005 2006 2007 (for.) 10.000 - New cars Trucks Passengers 10
PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED The fierce competition from road transport; The cost of fuel; The big fluctuation of volumes shipped by car manufacturers; The lack of adequate berthing and storage facilities; The road-driven mentality of truck operators; The lack of a daily frequency service; 11 Heavy bureaucratic procedures compared to road transport.
SOLUTIONS Introduce the eco-bonus concept Europe-wide; Strengthen the port infrastructure (berthing and storage facilities); Upgrade the inland connections (especially rail); Grant special port tariffs tailor-made to vessels operating in a MoS; 12 Reduce & simplify the administrative procedures.
OBJECTIVES FOR THE FUTURE Cooperation agreements with other major logistics operators to offer rail/sea integrated logistics solutions; Alliances with Greek, Turkish & Croatian maritime companies (ex: Landbridge project with LD Lines); Move to a daily frequency service. 13
CONCLUSIONS The MoS Italy - France: Good prospects for the future; A means to improve the competitiveness of road transport; An opportunity to develop the cooperation between road, rail & maritime modes of transport; A means to promote bilateral agreements between Italy and & French transportation companies; 14 A contribution to the protection of the environment and to Europe s sustainable development.
