Pt.6 Ch.31 Sec.1 Page 5 SECTION 1 GENERAL A. Introduction A 100 Objective 101 The rules in this chapter give requirements to corrosion prevention of tanks and spaces/ areas for vessels. The class notation will provide documentation that the vessel is in compliance with the IMO PSPCs. A 200 Scope 201 The requirements in this chapter cover: Documentation requirements Monitoring of inspection equipment, techniques and reporting methods. A 300 Application 301 The COAT-PSPC(X) notations may be given to newbuildings built in compliance with: SOLAS Chapter II-1, Part A-1, Regulation 3-2 and the IMO Resolution MSC.215(82): Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC) for Dedicated Seawater Ballast Tanks in All Types of Ships and Double-Side Skin Spaces of Bulk Carriers SOLAS Chapter II-1, Part A-1, Regulation 3-11 and the IMO Resolution MSC.288(87): Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC) for Cargo Oil Tanks of Crude Oil Tankers IMO Resolution MSC.244(83): Performance Standard for Protective Coatings for Void Spaces on Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers MSC.1/Circ.1279: Guidelines for Corrosion Protection of Permanent Means of Access Arrangements, as relevant. Guidance note: The requirements of IMO Resolution MSC.244(83) are made voluntary by IMO. ---e-n-d---of---g-u-i-d-a-n-c-e---n-o-t-e--- 302 The COAT-PSPC(X) notations are intended for all SOLAS vessels, but may be applied to all types of vessels. The vessels shall comply with the requirements for corrosion prevention of tanks and spaces/areas as described in Sec.2 C. 303 The performance standards and guidelines referred to in 301 are further described in Classification Note No. 33.1. IMO PSPC is used as a common name for the listed IMO documents.
Pt.6 Ch.31 Sec.2 Page 6 SECTION 2 REQUIREMENTS A. Documentation A 100 Documentation requirements 101 For class notation COAT-PSPC(X), documentation shall be submitted as required by Table A1. 102 The initial documentation (specifications and procedures) shall be submitted for approval prior to start of any coating work (shop priming). The final documentation (also including logs and records) shall be submitted for review prior to delivery of the vessel. B. Monitoring B 100 Monitoring requirements 101 During construction phase the coating inspection requirements (equipment, techniques and reporting methods) shall be monitored by the Society. Guidance note: The attending surveyor of the Society will not verify the application of the coatings but will review the reports of the coating inspectors to verify that the specified procedures have been followed. ---e-n-d---of---g-u-i-d-a-n-c-e---n-o-t-e--- C. Corrosion Prevention Systems C 100 Requirements for corrosion prevention systems 101 A corrosion prevention system shall be specified and applied to the tanks and spaces/areas, as described in the IMO PSPCs, for different types of ships. 102 The COAT-PSPC(X) class notation series will document compliance with the IMO PSPCs, where the X in the parentheses will denote corrosion prevention of different tanks and spaces/areas, given in Table C1: Table C1 Class notations Class notation Tanks/spaces Ship types COAT-PSPC(B) Dedicated seawater ballast tanks All vessels COAT-PSPC(C) Cargo oil tanks Oil Tankers COAT-PSPC(D) Double-side skin spaces Bulk Carriers COAT-PSPC(V) Void spaces Bulk Carriers, Oil Tankers The notations may be combined, e.g. a Bulk Carrier may have a COAT-PSPC(B;D;V) class notation.
