Product 2.1 Product description / Product definition Master X-Seed additives are hardening accelerators that boost the hydration process of early age cement. Master X-Seed is added to concrete in order to accelerate the strength development of the concrete mix across all temperature ranges. Master X-Seed additives consist of synthetically produced crystalline particles suspended in aqueous solution. A variety of Master X-Seed versions have been created to address local customer needs. For this EPD an average product composition based on Master X-Seed 100 and Master X-Seed 120 was used to determine the environmental impacts and life cycle assessment. European Parliament and Council Directive /EU No. 305/2011/ dated March 9, 2011 applies for placing hardening accelerators on the market. The products require a Declaration of Performance and CE marking taking into consideration EN 934-2:2009. The respective national guidelines apply for use of the products in the EU/EFTA. 2.2 Application Master X-Seed is introduced in small amounts (0.5-6% by mass of the cement binder content) to concrete in order to accelerate the hardening process. Master XSeed is optimized for all kind of concretes, especially for structural precast elements and ready-mix concrete. 2.3 Technical Data Hardening accelerators must comply with the general requirements of /EN 934-1:2008/ Admixtures for concrete, mortar and grout- Part 1: Common aspects and the additional requirements of /EN 934-2:2009/ Admixtures for concrete, mortar and grout Part 2: Concrete Admixtures Definitions, requirements, conformity, marketing and labelling. The products require a Declaration of Performance and CE marking taking into consideration EN 934-2:2009. The respective national guidelines apply for use of the products in the EU/EFTA. 2.4 Delivery status Master X-Seed hardening accelerators are delivered as aqueous solutions in intermediate bulk containers (IBC) with 1150 kg product. For larger applications the product is delivered in bulk form delivered by tank trucks. 2.5 Base materials / Ancillary materials The main raw materials in Master X-Seed products are nitrates, formates, sulfates, sulfamates silicates and organic acids suspended in aqueous solution. Active substance concentration lies between 10 and 25% by mass. The typical dosage volumes for use in concrete are between 1 and 4% by mass, in terms of binder content. The Master X-Seed products covered by this EPD typically contain the following materials by mass: Formates*: max. 15% Sulfates*: max. 10% Sulfamates*: max. 10% Silicates*: max. 10% Nitrates*: max. 10% Org. acids*: max. 15% Additives: max. 5% Water: approx. 75-90% *Solid content These volumes are average values and the composition of products complying with the EPD can deviate from these concentration levels in individual cases. 2.6 Manufacture The production of the hardening accelerators involves batch mixing of the various ingredients. The raw materials are added into a batch reactor and transported after mixing to a filling station. The process follows standards described in /EN 934-6:2001/ Admixture for concrete, mortar and grout. 2.7 Environment and health during manufacturing As a general rule, no environmental or health protection measures other than those specified by law are necessary. 2.8 Product processing/installation During concrete manufacture, hardening accelerators are usually added along with the mixing water. Health and safety measures (eye protection, hand protection, possibly respiratory equipment and body protection) are to be taken and consistently adhered to in accordance with the information on the safety data sheet and conditions on site. 2.9 Packaging Master X-Seed hardening accelerators are delivered as aqueous solutions in intermediate bulk containers (IBC) with 1150 kg product. For larger applications the product is delivered in bulk by tank trucks. The IBCs consist of plastic containers (typically HDPE) surrounded by a metal cage (typically steel) supported by an integrated plastic pallet (typically HDPE). Empty containers can be reused or recycled. 2.10 Condition of use Master X-Seed is incorporated and firmly bound into the hardened concrete. 2.11 Environment and health during use No known risks to air, water and soil due to use of the hardening accelerators is known. 2.12 Reference service life 2.13 Extraordinary effects Fire Water Mechanical destruction 2.14 Re-use phase Not relevant as product is used once and incorporated into the concrete. 2.15 Disposal Empty, dried containers are directed to the recycling process where practicable. Residue (16 03 04 inorganic wastes other than those mentioned in 16 03 03) must be directed to proper waste disposal. 2.16 Further information Additional information on Master X-Seed products is available on product safety data sheets, on technical data sheets, on the BASF website or on request. An electronic version of this declaration is available at www.bau-umwelt.de. 3. LCA: Calculation rules 3

3.1 Declared This EPD refers to 1 kg of average Master X-Seed hardening accelerator. The average is based on the relative sales amounts of Master X-Seed 100 and Master X-Seed 120 expected in 2015-2021. 3.4 Cut-off criteria No cut-off was applied in the LCA calculation. All raw materials used were taken into consideration. Manufacture of machinery, buildings, and other infrastructure was not included in the LCA. Declared unit Value Declared unit Gross density 1 1140 kg kg/m3 3.2 System boundary Type of the EPD: cradle-to-gate The following modules are included in the life cycle assessment (LCA): A1 production of raw materials A2 transport of raw materials to manufacture A3 manufacture of product, including provision of energy, production of packaging, as well as auxiliaries and waste treatment 3.3 Estimates and assumptions All inputs of materials and utilities for production of Master X-Seed products were considered. Transport: it was assumed that all raw materials are transported 500 km by truck (EUR5, diesel, 17.3 t capacity, 85% utilization). Packaging: typical intermediate bulk containers (IBC) were assumed, consisting of 18.5 kg steel cages, 21.6 kg HDPE integrated pallet, and 15.5 kg HDPE "bottle" (the holding volume) containing a total of 1150 kg of Master X-Seed product. Furthermore, it wa assumed that the bottle is reused once; for the steel cage and integrated HDPE pallet 10 use cycles were assumed. 3.5 Background data Data from GaBi Version 6.115 database was used to model background process steps and materials for which company-specific product data sets were not available. Energy and transport was modeled using GaBi data sets. 3.6 Data quality Production data quality is high and based on annual production. Generic background data sets including electricity and transport are from GaBi database version 6.115 and up to date. BASF-specific input material data sets ( background data ) are based on production data not more than 5 years old. 3.7 Period under review The production data for Master X-Seed products reflect 2015 annual production. 3.8 Allocation The production of Master X-Seed does not involve any co-products. Therefore no allocation was necessary. 3.9 Comparability Basically, a comparison or an evaluation of EPD data is only possible if all the data sets to be compared were created according to /EN 15804/ and the building context, respectively the product-specific characteristics of performance, are taken into account. The used background database has to be mentioned. 4. LCA: Scenarios and additional technical information In accordance with the PCR Part A, no scenarios are indicated as only modules A1-A3 are declared. 4

LCA: Interpretation For the given system boundaries the production of the raw materials (phase A1) is the main driver of all environmental impact category results. The manufacturing step (A3) has an important contribution as well, up to 25% of total impact. This is primarily due to the assumption that the IBC HDPE bottle part is reused only once. For the steel cage and integrated HDPE pallet, 10 use cycles were assumed. This is a conservative assumption since the product may be delivered in tank trucks and/or any IBC used may be reused more often. The impact associated with the transportation steps (A2) are minor. For the primary energy demand, nearly 80% is associated with the production of raw materials (A1). Nearly 20% is due to the manufacturing phase (A3), 5 due to electricity use as well as the packaging. The renewable energy content is low. For the global warming potential (GWP), raw materials are responsible for 90% of the total impact. The remainder is due to manufacturing, the main driver being the packaging components. Similar results can be observed for eutrophication (EP) and ozone depletion (ODP). For abiotic depletion-fossils (ADPF), acidification (AP) and photochemical ozone creation (POCP) the contribution of the manufacturing phase is considerably greater, making up about 15-25% of total impact. For manufacturing, the polyethylene in the IBC packaging is the main driver, assuming only one reuse of the IBC bottle.

On average the individual Master X-Seed products differ by up to +/- 25% from the Master X-Seed product average. 7.
