Klikk Introduction for å redigere tittelstil Maritime shipping is a big contributor to GHG emissions, and has a long way to go Public actors are doing something -EU s MRV (2013) -IMO (2015) Currently, we are at the data collection stage in both roadmaps Data quality is integral for informed and transparent climate policymaking going forward But what about the quality of these GHG emissions data? And can Maritime Big Data such as AIS data play a role here?

Klikk Maritime for Big å redigere Data tittelstil Uses the ability of society to harness information in novel ways to produce useful insights or goods or services of significant value * AIS (Automatic Identification System) data is such an example AIS: A transponder system designed for the exchange of navigational marine data Big Data characteristics: i) High variety ii) High volume iii) High velocity Table 1.1: AIS data AIS platform Static information: Mobile Maritime Service Identity (MMSI) IMO number (if assigned) Call sign Name Length and beam Ship location of AIS Voyage information: Where (not a real field) Destination/ETA Cargo Dynamic information: (Position, course, speed, heading) Base station Class A ship Class B ship (the true heading is optionalfor Class B CSTDMA ships) Search and rescue aircraft Aid to navigation Dependent on speed and course change Safety and administrative messages Data message *(Mayer-Schonberger and Cukier, 2012) Reporting interval 6 min interval/upon request 6 min interval/upon request 10 s interval (10 s nominal) 2 s to 3 min interval (approximately 7 s average) (see Table 4) 5 s to 3 min interval (30 s nominal) 10 s interval 3 min interval At anchor: 3 min Slow moving: 0-14 knots: 31/3 s to 10 s Fast moving > 14 knots: 2 s -6 s As required As required
Klikk How can for AIS å redigere data be relevant tittelstilto the IMO/EU? Ship owners/operators may cheat AIS data can detect this in many ways: i) The length and duration of each vessel s voyage ii) Rough estimates of fuel consumption can be estimated using historical AIS data tonnes of iron ore exports Figure 1.0: AIS data study- Actual iron ore output vs. Estimated iron ore output (Narvik, Norway) 6,000,000 5,000,000 4,000,000 3,000,000 2,000,000 1,000,000 Official port statistics (SSB) Simple AIS model AIS data has previously been shown to have decent forecasting powers (Sekkesaeter, 2017) 0
Klikk Conclusion for å redigere tittelstil EU s MRV and IMO s data collection regulation are of similar design and with identical aims The quality of the data is may be hampered by cheating AIS data can provide a tool for straightforward verification of emissions data IMO and the EU should ensure that any new upcoming emissions legislation will be fair and realistic for shipping players to comply with However, such new legislation may seem some time down the road (with the exception of the 0,5% Sulphur cap of 2020) In the meantime, we can all do our bit to increase our energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint
