Information Sheet National Museum of Ireland Manager Assistant Keeper Grade I, Registration Department The National Museum of Ireland invites application for the position of Manager in the National Museum of Ireland s Collection Resource Centre at Swords, Co Dublin Information on the Collections Resource Centre is appended Responsible for: Location: Reports to: Duties: The day to day management and operation of the Collections Resource Centre in line with NMI policies. The position is based at the Collections Resource Centre, Balheary Road, Swords, Co Dublin. The Registrar of the NMI or any officer appointed by the Director. The person appointed to the position will carry out assigned duties appropriate to the development and management of the Collections Resource Centre. The manager will work under the direction of the Registrar. The duties set out below reflect the general duties of the Manager of the Collections Resource Centre and will be subject to review from time to time in line with the ongoing development and management needs of NMI. The manager will be required to Manage the day to day operation of the site including line management of staff, interns, and others assigned to the Centre Play a lead role in planning and developing the Centre Manage the intake and documentation of collections and material in line with NMI policies and practices Manage the collections in storage in the Centre, in line with NMI policies and practices, including implementing procedures for documentation and preventative conservation Establish a working relationship with the Curatorial, Conservation, Facilities and other Departments of the NMI. 1
Establish and administer research and other public access to the collections, in consultation with the curatorial and other departments Play a lead role in developing and implementing procedures, in line with NMI policies, in respect of security, health and safety, disaster planning, risk and any other procedures that may be required for the efficient, effective and safe operation of the Centre Play a lead role in developing and implementing procedures, for the maintenance of the facility including building maintenance, communications, ICT, mechanical and electrical services of all systems, cleaning and any other procedures that may be required to keep the facility maintained to a high standard Establish a working relationship with the relevant staff of the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government (DEHLG) in accordance with the partnership arrangement between the NMI and DEHLG Procure services and supplies for the Centre as required in line with NMI procedures Administer and monitor budgets, which are assigned to the Collections Resource Centre, including purchase order processing on the Financial Management Systems (Oracle Financials) Manage and liaise with contractors working on site Any other duties as appropriate to the position. Essential Requirements Primary honours degree in the Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences or General Management or a minimum of five years relevant museum experience. Desirable Requirements Knowledge of NMI s collections and current best practice in registration and preventive conservation procedures Experience in managing documentation and care of collections in a museum environment Have proven knowledge and experience in financial management Experience of facilities management Experience of project management Experience of delivering verbal presentations, chairing meetings, writing reports and submissions Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline 2

Should the officer s service be satisfactory as regards health, conduct and performance during this period, the officer will, on completion of the period be offered a contract of indefinite duration. Should the officer s service be unsatisfactory, the appointment may be terminated at any time during the period. Increments, apart from long service increments, are awarded annually provided the officer s services are satisfactory. A non-ppc scale applies to applicants who are serving civil servants or who are serving in certain other categories of the Public Service, and who entered that employment in the Civil/Public Service before 6 April 1995. Incremental credit may be granted in respect of persons who have previously been employed in the public service in Ireland, or an equivalent body in the EU Member States (employment in the public service in EFTA countries and the EU Commission will be considered relevant in this regard), having experience relevant to the work of the employment contract from National Museum of Ireland. Hours of Attendance Hours of attendance are as fixed from time to time. At present they amount to 41 hours per week. (Due to the nature of the work NMI s flexi system will not apply to this position). Annual Leave Superannuation Annual Leave will be 25 working days per annum, rising to 30 days after 5 years service, and 31 after 10 year s service. This leave is based on a five-day week and is exclusive of the usual public holidays Membership of the National Museum of Ireland s Staff Superannuation Scheme and associated Spouses and Children s Scheme will apply to this appointment. National Museum of Ireland Collections Resource Centre Swords The National Museum of Ireland (NMI) has recently acquired a 200,000 sq.ft premises in Swords, Co Dublin to establish a centralised Collections Resource Centre (CRC), to provide appropriate accommodation for the management and care of the NMI s reserve collections and to provide access to the material for research and education purposes. The NMI reserve collections are currently stored in a variety of locations and it is proposed to transfer these reserve collections to the CRC over the next two years. The Swords Premises Has sufficient space to house collections requirements 200,000 sq. ft. Is capable of maintaining a high level of environmental control (humidity, temperature and light) Meets NMI s security and fire prevention specifications Provides office space and parking for staff Provides scope for archive rooms, library, canteen, reception area, meeting rooms, study rooms, photographic and design studios and conservation laboratories.
