Water Evening Courses Basic Water Supply IEPA # 4 Hours: 45 Fee: $ 525 Location: ERTC (SIUE Campus) Dates: Jan. 10 to April 25, 2018 Time: 6-9 p.m. Schedule: Wednesdays, 15 weeks Instructor: Mike Buss This course is an introduction to water supply covering Class D and C operations. Topics include wells, chlorination, fluoridation, chemical treatment, distribution systems, pumps, sampling, operating reports, water quality and related math. Class B & A Water Supply IEPA #6 Hours: 45 Fee: $ 525 Location: Geneva Dates: Jan. 3 to April 18, 2018 Time: 6-9 p.m. Schedule: Wednesdays, 15 weeks Instructor: Jerry Adrian This course is intended to assist in preparing for the Class B and A certification exam. Ground water treatment, ion exchange softening, surface water treatment and lime softening are covered with related math and chemistry. Topics include ground water quality, oxidation, iron and manganese control, surface water quality, clarification, filtration, taste and odor control, process waste disposal, jar testing, sampling and operation reports Wastewater Evening Courses Activated Sludge and Nutrient Removal (Class 2/1) Hours: 30 Fee: $ 350 Location: ERTC (SIUE campus) Dates: Jan. 8 to March 12, 2018 Time: 6-9 p.m. Schedule: Mondays, 10 weeks Instructor: Jim Winslade IEPA # 12332 This course deals with modes of operation, process control testing, operating strategies and troubleshooting of the activated sludge process (conventional activated sludge, sequence batch reactor, fixed media systems). Aerobic digestion, anaerobic sludge digestion, and solids handling systems (drying beds, lagoons and land application). Nutrient removal and advanced laboratory practices will also be discussed. Winter-Spring 2018 Workshop Descriptions Class D Water 1 General operation and maintenance procedures for water distribution (Distribution Systems) systems are covered. Topics include electrical maintenance, pumps and (7.5 hours) hydraulics; installation procedures for water mains, water services and hydrants; water meter; valve operation; maps and records; related math. May be taken alone or with Class D 2. Class D Water 2 General operation and maintenance procedures for water distribution systems (Distribution Systems) are covered. Topics include storage, rules, regulations, sampling, operation (7.5 hours) reports, cross connections, and math. May be taken alone or with Class D 1. Class C Water 1 Operation and maintenance of wells and chemical feeding operations are (Ground Water) covered with related math and chemistry. Topics include well math, (7.5 hours) chlorination and chemical feed math. May be taken alone or with Class C 2. Class C Water 2 Operation and maintenance of pumps, as well as electrical maintenance are (Ground Water) covered. Topics include corrosion control, fluoridation, sequestration, (7.5 hours) chemical formulas, sampling and reporting. May be taken alone or with Class C 1. Class B Water 1 Groundwater treatment is covered in this one-day course with related math and (Filtration) chemistry. Groundwater topics include water quality, oxidation, iron and manganese (7.5 hours) control, filtration, sampling and reporting. May be taken alone or with Class B 2. Class B Water 2 Groundwater treatment topics include ion exchange softening, with related math (Ion Exchange Softening) and chemistry, process waste disposal, and electrical maintenance. May be taken (7.5 hours) alone or with Class B 1. Class A Water 1 Surface water treatment topics include clarification, jar testing, filtration (Surface Water- and related math and chemistry. Pump operation and maintenance are also Clarification covered. May be taken alone or with Class A 2. (7.5 hours) Class A Water 2 Surface water and lime softening are covered with related math and chemistry. (Surface Water - Other topics include taste and odor control, process waste disposal and Lime Softening) electrical maintenance. May be taken alone or with Class A 1. (7.5 hours) Class 1 & 2 This course deals with the skills needed to operate, facilitate process control, and Wastewater Operations troubleshoot different types of treatment plant units. To include: Conventional (15 hours) Activated Sludge, Sequencing Batch Reactors, and Oxidation Ditches. Applied mathematics with process control calculations are stressed. Physical, chemical, and laboratory analysis methods are discussed. Also included are nitrogen and phosphorus removal techniques. Class 3 & 4 Wastewater Wastewater Operations Process control and troubleshooting of trickling filter and Rotating Biological Contactor units are covered. Skills needed to operate trickling filter and RBC (15 hours) units are covered. Class 3 certification exam materials are also covered. Sources and characteristics of wastewater are taught. Topics include biological treatment principles, process control, normal operation and preventative maintenance for collection systems, preliminary treatment devices, primary treatment devices, stabilization ponds, and disinfection systems. Federal and state laws, rules and regulations are also discussed.

Cross Connection Includes demonstration of inspection and testing procedures for reduced Control pressure zone (RPZ) and double check valve, back-flow preventers. Each (28 hours) participant is provided opportunities to perform inspection and testing procedures. (23.5 hours/operators) To successfully complete the workshop, participants must pass the written exam and properly perform inspection and testing procedures on RPZ and double check valve backflow preventers. Failure of either section will require the individual to retake the entire course again at a later date at FULL COST. Licensed plumbers will be eligible for IEPA approval to inspect and test RPZ and double check valve backflow preventers upon successful course completion. Certified water operators are eligible for a limited IEPA approval. Wastewater An intensive training session to develop skills specific to process control and Operator Short operation of Class 4, 3, 2 and 1 plants. All aspects of plant operations, process School control tests and their interpretation, process control math, safety reports and records (31 hours) for each specific class are covered. On Friday afternoon, the IEPA wastewater certification exam is given for eligible students. Class 4: Class 3: Class 2/1 Stresses stabilization ponds, collection systems and chlorination Systems. Class 4 certification exam materials are reviewed. Stresses trickling filters and RBC units. Class 3 certification exam materials are reviewed. Activated sludge treatment plants with aerobic and anaerobic sludge Digesters are stressed. Class 2 and 1 exam materials are reviewed. ERTC recommends that all wastewater certification level exams be taken in sequential order Note to students attending Wastewater Short School To take the Certification exam on Friday you must make application directly to IEPA Contact IEPA Wastewater Operator Certification Program at 217-782-9720 The application may also be downloaded from the IEPA website: epa.state.il.us/water One-Year Program at ERTC ERTC offers a Certificate of Completion in Water Quality Control Operations. This program includes two semesters of classroom and hands-on learning at ERTC and a 10-week internship at water supply and/or wastewater treatment plants. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the exams for water supply and wastewater operator certification in Illinois and Missouri. The job market for trained operators seems to continue to grow, providing ERTC students a great outlook for employment. The ERTC facilities include two teaching laboratories, library/computer center, classrooms, auditorium, and inside the spacious building is a fully functional 30,000 gallons/day water and wastewater treatment plant designed and used exclusively for training. ERTC is the most unique training center in the nation. The ERTC staff are all experienced operators, and are State certified water and/or wastewater operators, as well as being experienced instructors. If you do not cancel and do not attend, you will receive no refund. Failure to pay for a course will require prepayment for future training events offered through the ERTC. CROSS CONNECTION CONTROL COURSES: There will be no refund for any registration not cancelled at least five working days before the first day of the workshop. If you cancel twice for the same type of workshop, you will forfeit your registration fees and be required to wait at least six months before any registration will be accepted.
