Bord Gáis Networks Natural Gas in Transport NGV Day 2014 Presentation June 2014

Bord Gáis Networks Overview Established in 1976 Bord Gáis Networks, on behalf of Gaslink, develops, operates and maintains Ireland s natural gas network and provides transportation services to all gas suppliers and shippers. Connects all new gas customers to the network and is responsible for work on service pipes and meters at customer premises. Manages a full 24-hour emergency response service and attends over 20,000 reported gas escapes annually with an average response time of 25 minutes. Expanding into new gas industry areas including natural gas vehicles, renewable gas and smart metering.

Ireland s Gas Network Bord Gáis Networks has developed a world-class gas infrastructure in Ireland comprising: An Interconnector System linking Ireland to the UK & Continental gas markets 2,149 km Transmission pipeline network 11,160 km Distribution pipeline network ~170 AGIs, ~800 DRIs There are more than 647,000 gas users in Ireland in over 157 population centres within 19 counties throughout the country

Gas in Transport We are currently supporting the objective of Gas in Transport as a sustainable alternative to diesel and petrol. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG): supplied via the existing gas network offers operators a lower cost alternative with lower emissions and retains reliable performance. offers an ideal opportunity to migrate to renewable biogas as new sources become available on the network. Focus on the Commercial Transport Market. 5 Bord Gáis Networks

The Irish Commercial Transport Market State of transformation Sector and policies being influenced by Environment Desire for a sustainable model High costs of existing fuels Irish Transport is 98% dependent on Oil (SEAI 2012) European policy becoming more defined Need for alternatives - seeking practical solutions NGVs can assist Ireland s transportation market 6 Bord Gáis Networks Target market size - vehicle numbers 328,400 Internation al Aviation Domestic 14% Aviation 0% Rail 1% Public Passenger Services 4% Road Freight 16% Road Private Car 46% 21,800 10,300 Irish Transport Energy - 2012 Unspecifie d Navigation 11% 1% Fuel Tourism 7% Trucks Buses Vans

Our Objective By 2024 CNG Vehicles in: 5% of the Truck Market and 10% of the Bus Market This equates to: c. 1,000 trucks and c. 1,000 buses Develop Anaerobic Digestion and other sources of renewable gas to deliver renewable energy via the gas network. Sustainable Transport Sustainable Power Generation

Future network Potential CNG Refill Stations 9 Bord Gáis Networks

How are we progressing Installed country s first fast fill station in BGN HQ 2014. Transitioning BGN fleet Ongoing trials in key segments truck, bus and van receiving very positive feedback Establishing supply chain and developing Standards Engaging with key stakeholders e.g. SEAI, NRA, HSA, NSAI, Fire Services Seeking policy support Preparing for commercialisation

CNG provides pathway to Biomethane Renewable Transport National target: Renewable Transport (RES-T) -> 10% by 2020 Biomethane can form part of the solution for RES-T Sweden: 65% of gas used in transport comes from biomethane Germany: Focus on biomethane and investing in the CNG infrastructure 2009 12% of 850 CNG refuelling stations had 10% biomethane at the dispenser Aim for 20% biomethane at all dispensers by 2020 CNG can facilitate the development of biomethane industry in Ireland 11

NGV A Practical Application miles

Questions Do we have evidence of long term reliability of vehicles & equipment? How do we support operator confidence in CNG? Vehicle Availability specifically for trials? 13 Bord Gáis Networks
