INDUSTRY 4.0 SENSOR INTELLIGENCE FROM SICK Networked reality: the future of the industrial value chain

INDUSTRY 4.0 DRIVING YOUR INDUSTRY 4WARD MAKING GREAT STRIDES INTO THE FUTURE Networked production and control processes in complex machine environments will determine the future in Industry 4.0. SICK, however, is already laying the foundation for dynamic, real-time-optimized, and selforganized industry processes today. As providers of data, sensors are essential for Smart Factories. And as sensor experts, we at SICK understand the responsibility we bear. That is why the company has been committed to its tagline of Sensor Intelligence. since 2004. 2 INDUSTRY 4.0 SICK 8021162/2017-04-03

INDUSTRY 4.0 Networked reality Networked production and control processes in complex machine environments will determine the future in Industry 4.0. Application expertise Intelligent sensor technology must be suited to the task in question. SICK ensures this with industry and application knowledge. Data sovereignty Apart from humans, sensor technology is the only source of data in production. The security of this data determines the success of networked processes. Smart Factories supply tailored solutions Having access to a high volume of data provides the opportunity to produce more efficiently and more flexibly and to achieve higher standards of quality. However, the success in making this vision a reality is heavily dependent on the reliability of the data producers: the sensors which capture real-time situations and convert these into digital signals, forming the basis for the process chain. It is important to precisely define which data is required. SICK is able to draw on a wealth of industry and application knowledge in order to find the right solution for every customer. A solution is only intelligent if used in the right way. Targeted data collection by means of individual configuration provides a reliable basis for the design of application-specific production processes. The seamless networking of individual production steps means that these can be combined in any way required, with full traceability. This enables the creation of tailored products on request. Also, all production steps become fully traceable in real time: Comprehensive track and trace solutions provide exceptionally accurate information about each product s location. Consequently, quality controls can be carried out directly at each step; production faults are identified and corrected without delay. Flexibility and transparency are the hallmarks of the Smart Factory. Data sovereignty is essential In order to fully exploit the potential of Industry 4.0, the network of the parties involved must think and act beyond the boundaries of their own production systems. This is the only way to link up supplier, manufacturer, and customer processes seamlessly and automatically. Data security is the key to success in this regard. From collecting data to transferring, saving, and processing it, the network must be protected against failures and misuse: Data sovereignty must be ensured at all costs. Industry 4.0 requires a holistic approach: As a product, system, and service specialist, SICK lives up to this requirement and collaborates with its customers to develop tailored responses to future challenges. 8021162/2017-04-03 INDUSTRY 4.0 SICK 3

HUMAN-ROBOT COLLABORATION HUMAN-ROBOT COLLABORATION Producing companies want their production workflows to be highly automated yet flexible. This also includes closer interaction between humans and machines. The factories of tomorrow are increasingly set to blur the lines between humans and machines, with teams of robots and people working side by side. This calls for safety solutions which respond with absolute reliability and high levels of flexibility, even in unexpected situations. Our 70 years of experience in equipping numerous machines and plants are the foundation for our tailored solutions, safety systems, and services that are able to meet future requirements. As today s plants already contain elements that live up to the requirements of Industry 4.0 and are waiting for their full potential to be tapped. Flexible, safe, reliable It is already possible to adapt safety sensors accurately to the current machine process. Intelligent algorithms are making it possible to move away from digitally activated safety technology in favor of a continuous machine response based on the current position of the worker or on the plant. This means that the worker approaching the machine no longer triggers a complete shutdown, but that, instead, the working speed is being reduced appropriately or the directions of movement are being modified. This ensures the worker s safety at all times without having to interrupt the production process, thus minimizing downtime and unintended shutdowns, cutting down cycle times, and boosting efficiency and availability in machines and plants. Safety expertise in the portfolio The programmable safety controller with accompanying software, which can also be combined with a safe sensor cascade, makes it possible to protect a large number of hazardous points at the same time. The new generation of safety laser scanners reliably protects hazardous areas, access points, and hazardous points. High-performance safety light curtains can be used as compact muting alternatives without additional sensors and as hazardous point and area protection with high availability. SICK maximizes the availability of protective devices and keeps machine and plant downtime to a minimum with its products. 4 INDUSTRY 4.0 SICK 8021162/2017-04-03

TRACK AND TRACE SOLUTIONS TRACK AND TRACE SOLUTIONS As they move toward Industry 4.0, companies are facing the challenge of networking machines and overarching IT systems within their production processes. The aim of this concept is to gain an overview of all production and logistics processes along the entire supply chain, right through to order fulfillment and delivery to the customer. The seamless networking of individual production steps makes products traceable during complex production and logistics processes. Track and trace solutions provide exceptionally accurate information about the current location and condition of each product. This optimizes production and delivery networks as a whole. Intelligent sensor solutions generate data and information which enable complete detection, identification, and tracing in the networked process chain. 8 INDUSTRY 4.0 SICK 8021162/2017-04-03

TRACK AND TRACE SOLUTIONS Seamlessly networked: every product firmly in sight Track and trace solutions can be implemented using a wide range of different technologies. When it comes to achieving the best possible reading performance and system integration, the choice of identification technology varies depending on the respective requirements. In Smart Factories, RFID and programmable cameras are the most popular choice as Industry 4.0-compatible solutions. In the automotive industry, meanwhile, RFID data cards are increasingly being installed in components. The sensor technology along the production chain uses the data cards to directly detect which assembly steps are to be initiated. As a result, it ensures comprehensive transparency up until delivery. Transparency for every process Today s intelligent sensor solutions are not just about recording reality accurately, but also about processing the information in the sensor. For example, thanks to a flexible output format, the data output can be adjusted exactly to suit the requirements by setting and linking the logical conditions. This reduces the level of programming effort in the control unit. In light of all this, each technology will continue to have its place in the future: RFID makes it possible to read and write data and thus make use of data cards in many different ways. The transponders do not even need direct visual contact. Image-based code readers, on the other hand, are able to read 2D codes and plain text. All stored images can be archived and analyzed. The SICK AppSpace eco-system delivers maximum development flexibility to minimize complexity, costs, and risks in the implementation of custom-made image-based track and trace solutions. SICK AppSpace is based on SICK AppStudio, an open development system for customer-specific applications on programmable SICK devices. The SIM4000 Sensor Integration Machine part of the SICK AppSpace eco-system opens up new possibilities for application solutions. Data from SICK sensors and cameras can be merged into a point cloud, evaluated, archived, and transmitted. 8021162/2017-04-03 INDUSTRY 4.0 SICK 9

FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING Low quantities and individualized mass products are the key words of Industry 4.0. To make this a reality, a machine or plant must be able to handle variable product infeed and adapt to different formats. This is the only way to ensure that goods can be produced individually to suit customer needs right down to batch size 1, or be adapted to suit fluctuations in demand as flexibly and efficiently as possible. Intelligent sensor technology goes hand in hand with a new standard of quality in flexibility. This technology makes it possible to collect production data in real time. SICK sensor intelligence supports and relieves data processing tasks by using intelligent functions to evaluate measurement data directly in the sensor and transferring the relevant user data in the form of prepared information. Well equipped for the future In practice, transforming existing plants and systems so that they are fit for this new world is a considerable challenge. This is why, at SICK, we place great emphasis on ensuring that our concepts are backwardly compatible. As a result, our products can be integrated into existing machines or even be connected to higher-quality data systems. SICK offers a large range of application-specific sensor and system solutions including those for identifying and tracing materials and products thus making it possible to reduce stock levels and throughput times. Sensor solutions for process monitoring and quality control offer added flexibility and autonomous adaptation when it comes to variations in quality or product changes. As a result, they offer resource efficiency, a lower reject rate, and a high level of throughput. Flexible production in the starting blocks As the level of automation in a plant increases, the tasks of the individual components increase as well: Photoelectric sensors with flexible sensor settings and diagnostic functions, for example, are already used in applications across a range of industries. Inductive, IO-Link-enabled proximity sensors perform complex tasks directly in the sensor. Contrast sensors, level sensors, and electronic pressure switches communicate parameter settings via integrated IO-Link interfaces. Measuring automation light grids reduce the amount of cabling in production environments and enable access to diagnostic functions and format changes. Encoders with EtherNet/IP feature an active web server as well as function blocks for fieldbus integration. Compact 2D LiDAR sensors (also 2D laser scanners) provide reliable object detection in the field of surface monitoring. Our application specialists use this portfolio to develop tailored concepts for optimizing production processes. SICK enables Industry 4.0 in every field. 12 INDUSTRY 4.0 SICK 8021162/2017-04-03
