Siding Installation Manual for: Color Natura Rustica 1

Ventilated Siding, Principle Ventilated siding systems consist of five main components: 1. Support structure 2. Ventilated cavity 3. Thermal insulation layer 4. Siding (Color Natura Rustica - 5/16 thickness) 5. Sub mounting frame (Wood Aluminum Galvanized steel) 1. Support Structure The exterior wall of a building is mainly made of concrete, CMU blocks, brickwork, steel or timber frame with studs and planked by gypsum panels, M4 panels, OSB or Plywood. 2. Ventilated Cavity The main task of the air cavity is the evacuation of moisture and excess heat. The air circulation occurs naturally thanks to the pressure difference between bottom and top. 3. Thermal Insulation Layer The advantage of an exterior thermal insulation is to keep the entire building structure at a constant temperature and to minimize thermal bridges and thus reduce the loss of energy to a minimum. Economic as well as ecological advantages result. 2

4. Siding (Color Natura Rustica ) The outer skin of the building envelope has two main functions; to be aesthetically attractive as well as to protect against influences from the climate and environment. 5. Sub frame Multi-Panels façade panels are installed on wood, aluminum or metal supports. The Multi-Panels siding concept is based on natural rear ventilation as it is the most reliable and sustainable, and provides maximum longevity to exterior Siding. Important: Siding with Multi-Panels products must always be carried out as a ventilated facade with min 1 (25 mm) distance between the Siding and the rear wind barrier lining (insulation material). In special situations (e.g. high rise buildings), local regulations may demand a larger ventilation gap, but normally 0.25% - 0.5% of the Siding area must be evenly ventilated and/or the inlet and outlet openings must have a cross section of at least 200 cm2/m2. Fastening of Multi-Panels Siding Multi-Panels panels are installed on wood or metal substructures. The fastening method using invisible fastening as glue or visible as screws or rivets allows an efficient attachment to the supporting structures (see below drawings). In fact if using visible screws/rivets, (A2 material) screw heads are hardly visible even at a slight distance away as they fit with the overall surface and are available in the same shades of color as the panels delivered. Sub-frames are to be designed by a structural engineer/contractor. Thermal expansion/retraction is to be accounted for. Sub mounting frame of wood with visible screw head, mounted to concrete or wood structure: 3

Fig.1a below. Center holes distance from edge, minimum 1 (25 mm) and to corners minimum 2.75 (70 mm), maximum distance between screws 16 o.c. ( 410 mm), always make sure that holes for fastening have space for thermal expansion. Drill 0.098 (2.5 mm) oversize hole compared to the screw core diameter size, or use the Multi-Panels screw concept with EPDM washer (Detail C). The installer is responsible for establishing a plane and strong sub-construction able to obtain the wind loads appearing on the actual facade and observing the fixing distances. Facade panels are normally installed in a vertical position on a vertical sub-structure. However, it is also possible to install the panels in a horizontal position. The guidelines for fixing are the same. Thermal expansion/retraction is to be accounted for. 4

Fastening with Rivets when wind load (see fig 2-2a) For wind load demand please see fig 2 below. This table applies to 5/16 (8 mm) panels, fastened with rivets onto metal sub-framing. Panels vertical mounted. Structural Engineer/Contractor shall assume overall responsibility for the facade engineering. Intermediate values for wind load/ spacing can be interpolated. A safety factor of 3.0 is taken into account for the admissible system load (rivet and panel). The value means the actual wind load occurring on the Siding. Fastener to panel edge distance of 1.57 (40 mm) horizontally and 3.15 (80 mm) vertically. Applicable wind load values are to be determined for each project in accordance with the local standards and for high-rise buildings with specific wind load studies. Fig. 2a: Sub mounting frame of metal with Rivets, mounted to concrete, wood. Fastening in-visible with sub structure of U profile and VBF Acrylic tape (see Fig. 3) Multi-Panels panels are installed on timber or metal substructures. Panel size max high 2 (600 mm) and max length 4 (1200 mm). The installer is responsible for establishing a plane and strong sub-construction able to obtain the loads appearing on the actual façade; local laws and fire regulations must also be observed (If accepted, install with strong VBF Acrylic tape, same adhesive as used for structural glassing). Thermal expansion/retraction is also to be accounted for. VBF Acrylic tape and U aluminum (Detail C) are supplied by Multi-Panels. 6

Sharp edges are made with fast running diamond tipped tools. Cutting to size may be done with normal slow or fast running hand tools or stationary equipment. When using fast running tools, dust exhaustion must be employed. Note: When using hand tools, cut the panels backside up. When using stationary saw equipment, cut the panels front-side up (the saw blade must always attack the board from the front-side). The periphery speed of the circular saw should be as depicted in the below table. Cutting depth should be 3/8 5/8 (10-15 mm) beyond the board. Guideline operation parameters for Multi-Panels saw blades Sawblade 0.09 (2.4mm) 0.09 (2.4mm) 0.1 (2.6mm) 0.1 (2.6 mm) 0.11 (2.8 mm) thickness inch: Sawblade 5.9 (150 mm) 9.05 (230 mm) 9.84 (250mm) 10.23 (260mm) 13.78 (350 mm) Ø inch: Rpm: 3800 2500 2300 ---- 1650 7

CUT-OUTS Cut-outs may be made with a jigsaw or a key-hole saw equipped with bi-metal or diamond tipped blade. It is recommended to drill a min 7/16 (8 mm) hole before cutting in the inside corner. In order to avoid creating a notch at the inside corner, cut edges should be sanded. CLEANING OF PANELS AFTER CUTTING AND DRILLING It is important to immediately remove dust caused by cutting and drilling from the front and backside of the panels with a soft brush/duster or a vacuum cleaner as it might damage the panel surface. Ensure that the panels are properly cleaned before installation, and if necessary use clean water or water with a mild detergent and a soft sponge or brush to remove dirt and dust from the surface. Thereafter, wipe the panels with a damp cloth. It may also be necessary to wash the surface after installation if the building site conditions have been unfavorable. This is done with clean water or water with a mild detergent and a soft sponge or brush and finally wiping the panels with a damp cloth. PROTECTIVE FILM Multi-Panels painted panels (Color and Natura) are equipped with polyethylene film between the panels for protection of the surface during transport and processing, which can be disposed of during installation. SAFETY As with all other building materials, safety precautions must be taken into account and local laws and regulations must be observed. Cutting and drilling are subject to dust development, and proper precautions must be taken by using appropriate dust extraction equipment. Dust from fiber cement panels is characterized as mineral dust and prolonged exposure to this may cause lung disease. Fast running electrical equipment such as hand held circular saws leave a fine and sharp edge on the panels and provide fine dust. Due to the speed of the blade the dust is dispersed over a larger area. Therefore, it is necessary to establish sufficient exhaustion and it is recommended the operator carry personal safety equipment. APPLICATION CONDITIONS Board temperature and ambient temperature should be + 44 F (+7 C) - 86 F (+30 C) and relative humidity <85 % (optimally 60 %). Process temperature must be min +44 F (+7 C). APPLICATION - FINISHING THE EDGES TO CUT WITH HYDRO BLOCK EDGE SEALER Note: These Instructions are mandatory for Color, Natura and Rustica siding panels. Before use, shake the Hydro Block thoroughly. In case of unventilated premises, use required protective respiratory equipment, wear protective clothing, safety goggles and gloves according to the Safety Datasheet. Carefully apply the solvent-based Hydro Block in a thin layer with a short hair roller. Excess Hydro Block on top of the surface should be removed immediately after painting. Disposal of this product must be with reference to local and national regulations. 8

STORING AND PROPER HANDLING Multi-Panels products are delivered with plastic protection cover on the pallet. If undamaged, the plastic cover protects against weather conditions during transportation. The plastic cover is for dust protection only and should be removed upon arrival at the building site. Hereafter the pallets should be kept under a roof, leaving the possibility of ventilation around the panels. Multi-Panels must be stored on a flat and dry level surface on pallets or sleepers with a minimum distance of 12 between the stacks on all sides. Note: Max. 5 pallets in a stack at the warehouse and on the building site max. 2 pallets in a stack. The panels must be lifted up and off the pallet and not drawn over the next board, as this will cause scratches and damage on the surface. Lift pallet crosswise and set forks apart to minimize bending of pallet. Fork length must support pallet entirely; if required, use fork extensions. General Information ANNUAL INSPECTION Normally, a Multi-Panels facade does not require maintenance to maintain its strength, properties and function, but an annual inspection of the surface, ventilation gaps, joints and fixings is recommended. Environmental impacts may, however, influence the visual appearance of the façade. Detection and repair of possible damages help promote a prolonged lifetime for the facade. HIGH PRESSURE CLEANING Warning High Pressure Cleaning is a rough treatment of a fiber cement siding. Use of a high pressure cleaner may damage the surface. Therefore, high pressure cleaning is not recommended. CLEANING OF DIRT Never clean a facade in bright sunlight, the Multi-Panels facade panels can be cleaned with cold or hot water with the addition of a mild household detergent not containing solvents. Before full scale cleaning it is recommended to test the selected cleaning method on a smaller area to make sure it performs as expected. Rinse with plenty of clean water until the facade is perfectly clean. MOSS AND ALGAE REMOVAL Never clean a facade in bright sunlight. Moss and algae growth can be removed with common detergents available on the market, examples are: Chlorine or Rodalon 2.5% active that has a long-term effect of preventing new growth. After wetting the Multi-panels with clean water, apply detergents according to the supplier s instructions. Do not leave the detergents to dry completely and be sure to rinse with plenty of clean water to remove the moss and algae. IMPACT BY POLLUTION AND NATURE Weather and nearby vegetation may affect the appearance of the panels. Take caution to avoid pollution, dust and leaves from trees, bushes and flowers to not impact the integrity of the panels. 9
