USAID Promote: Women in the Economy Forward Together Scholarship Information Guide 1. INTRODUCTION Promote: Women in the Economy (WIE) is a USAID-funded program that will partner with Afghan women to increase their participation in the economy by securing employment or advancing in their careers, and with women-owned businesses, or businesses that employ 10% or more women to grow their revenues. Through a series of programs under the theme of Forward Together, Women in the Economy will work with job seekers, businesses, and many other stakeholders throughout Afghanistan that share the same goals to help them make investments in their own success. Women in the Economy will work throughout all of Afghanistan, and currently has service centers open in the regional economic centers of Kabul, Mazar-i-Sharif, Herat, Jalalabad and Kandahar. Forward Together Scholarships Forward Together scholarships are designed to help Afghan women and girls who have a basic education to gain job specific technical skills needed by employers, with the goal of getting a job. Applicants should have a high school, technical/vocational school, or university education. The questions and answers below will help you decide if you should apply for a Forward Together Scholarship. Who can apply? Women and girls between the ages of 18 and 30. Girls may join the Forward Together program before they turn 18, but must be 18 years old when they complete training. Women must be under 30 years of age when they begin training. This scholarship is intended to help women and girls who have identified a specific career or job opportunity but who lack some workplace specific skills or qualifications to successfully apply for the job. Applicants must be committed to getting a paid job within 6 months of completing training, and must show ability to complete their course of study. What types of study or training are covered by Forward Together scholarships? Forward Together scholarships will only be awarded for short-term technical training courses or programs that last less than one year. It is up to the applicant to identify the program or course of study. Scholarships can be in any technical subject as long as the applicant can clearly demonstrate how the training will help the applicant succeed in getting a job. In other words, the applicant should have already identified a job or career where there is high demand from employers for a specific skill or certification, and be able to explain clearly in the scholarship application why the course of study will help them get this job or enter this career. The skills studied must be one that employers are actively recruiting for, or will be recruiting for in the next 12 to 18 months. The training must also be suited for professional or semi-professional skilled jobs in the private sector. Training programs for handicraft production (sewing, embroidery) and livelihoods skills (raising chickens, growing vegetables, etc.) are not eligible at this time as they are already supported by many other organizations. The table below shows examples of what types of training may be eligible, and which types are not: How many scholarships are available? Up to 3000 Forward Together scholarships will be awarded from 2016 through 2018, subject to available funding. What languages can I study in?
