ESR-2311 Most Widely Accepted and Trusted Page 2 of 4 4.0 DESIGN AND INSTALLATION 4.1 Design: The ceiling assembly is designed to support one layer of 5 / 8 -inch-thick (15.9 mm) gypsum board having a maximum weight of 2.5 psf (12.3 kg/m 2 ). Since the ShortSpan DGS system consists of gypsum boards screwed to suspended framing members, and the ceiling is supported on one level extending between laterally braced walls, the ShortSpan DGS system is not within the scope of the lateral load design requirements of ASTM E580 (for the 2012 IBC and ASCE 7-10) and CISCA 3-4 (for the 2009 and 2006 IBC and ASCE 7-05). Therefore, the ShortSpan DGS system must be designed for seismic loads as required under Chapter 13 of ASCE 7. 4.2 Installation: 4.2.1 General: The ceiling system must be installed in accordance with this report and the manufacturer s published installation instructions. 4.2.2 Angle Moldings: The angle moldings must be screw-attached to No. 25 or No. 20 gage steel wall studs spaced a maximum of 24 inches (610 mm) on center, with the No. 8 by 1 1 / 4 -inch-long (32 mm), wafer-head, steelframing, self-drilling tapping screws described in Section 3.2.7. 4.2.3 ShortSpan Tees: ShortSpan Tees must be installed to span between angle moldings or QuickStix Locking Pocket Main members, as applicable. The tees must be cut within 1 / 8 inch (3.2 mm) of the vertical leg of the molding, and both ends must be fixed in the locking tabs of either the Angle Moldings or the QuickStix Locking Pocket Main members. ShortSpan Tees must be installed at a maximum of 16 inches (406 mm) on center, and leveled to within 1 / 4 inch in 10 feet (6.4 mm in 3048 mm). The maximum length of tees between bearing end supports is 14 feet (4 267 mm), and must be based on the length of the tees, as noted in Table 1. The maximum unsupported length between clips, hanger wires or QuickStix Locking Pocket Main members is 7 feet (2.13 m). 4.2.4 StrongBack Support: When used, the StrongBack support must be installed by opening the lock tabs and sliding the support over the bulb of the ShortSpan Tees, then closing the lock tab to the original position. The StrongBack support must be leveled to within 1 / 4 inch in 10 feet (6.4 mm in 3048 mm). Vertical supports for the StrongBack Support that consist of vertical hangers and perimeter hangers must be designed and installed in accordance with the code. The maximum span of the StrongBack support between vertical supports is 36 inches (914 mm). 4.2.5 QuickStix Locking Pocket Mains (QSLPM): When used, the QuickStix Locking Pocket Main members must be installed parallel to the braced walls. The members must be cut within 1 / 8 inch (3.2 mm) of the vertical leg of the end supports, and both ends must be fixed in the locking tabs. ShortSpan Tees must be installed as described in Section 4.2.3. Vertical supports for the QSLPM members that consist of vertical hangers and perimeter hangers must be designed and installed in accordance with the code. The maximum span of a QSLPM member between vertical supports is 36 inches (914 mm). 4.2.6 Quikstix Uptight Clip: When used, the QuikStix Uptight Clip must be fastened to StrongBack and QuickStix Locking Pocket Main members, as applicable, at a maximum spacing of 36 inches (914 mm) on center, with four of the No. 8 by 1 1 / 4 -inch-long (32 mm), wafer-head, steel-framing, self-drilling tapping screws described in Section 3.2.7. Attachment of the QuikStix Uptight Clip must be with the short offset radius end of the clip facing the member, to allow correct alignment between the clip and member due to the offset between the bulb and web of the member. The opposite end of the clip must be fastened to the supporting structure in accordance with the approved construction documents, prepared by a registered design professional where required by statutes of the jurisdiction in which the project is to be constructed. 4.2.7 Gypsum Board Attachment: Maximum 5 / 8 -inchthick gypsum board must be installed and fastened to the ceiling framing system (tees, main members and angle moldings) in accordance with IBC Section 2508. 4.2.8 Lighting Fixtures: Lighting fixtures, when used, must be independently supported by the structure. 5.0 CONDITIONS OF USE The ShortSpan DGS (drywall grid system) described in this report complies with, or is a suitable alternative to what is specified in, those codes listed in Section 1.0 of this report, subject to the following conditions: 5.1 The ceiling framing members must be fabricated, and the drywall system with gypsum board must be installed in accordance with, this report and the manufacturer s published installation instructions.
