TÜV Middle East Member of TÜV NORD Group Welcome Water Technology and Water Management through Recycling Process 1

HSE Department TÜV Middle East TÜV NORD Group, a Competent and International Service Partner Management System Department Certification HSE Dept Training Lab services Engineering Department TUV Akademe 2

Water Management Water is the prime constituent of all living organisms Water moves easily from one physical state to another, and one place to another Water slowly absorbs and releases large quantities of energy Water is a superior solvent 3

Available Water Total = 326 million cubic miles 97% of earth s water is in oceans 2.997% is locked in ice caps and glaciers 0.003% is easily accessible Soil moisture Groundwater Water vapor Lakes Streams If all of earth s water could fit into a two-liter bottle, the fresh water we could use would be equal to half of one teaspoon. This is about 1% of the total. 4

Let us see the today s status in UAE EAD Abu Dhabi warns against the depletion of water resources Currently 641 cubic meter groundwater resources are still available, but less than 3% of this is fresh water. EAD s report reveals that groundwater contributes 71.2% to the total water demand, followed by desalinated water ( 24% ) and treated waste water (4.8%) 5

Prevention of Pollution Prevention of pollution: Use of process, practices, techniques, materials, products, services, or energy to avoid, reduce or control (Separately or in combination) the creation, emission, or discharge of any type of pollutant or waste in order to reduce adverse environmental impacts. It can include source reduction, elimination, process, product, or service changes, efficient use of resources, materials and energy substitution, reuse, recovery, reclamation, and treatment. 6

Water Management Water management is the activity of planning, developing, distributing and optimum use of water resources under defined water polices and regulations. It may mean: management of water treatment of drinking water, industrial water, sewage or wastewater management of water resources management of flood protection management of the water table 7

Recycling water Technology Water Technologies for Green Buildings Grey Water Treatment Systems Small Scale Sewage Treatment Systems PURE Reed Bed Sewage Treatment 8

What is Grey Water? Water From: Showers and Baths Wash Basins Washing Machines Dish Washers Kitchen Sinks 55% 45% Grey Water Black Water 9

Why Grey Water Treatment? Environmental Benefits: Reduces Water Demand from Ground Water Resources, Desalination Plants etc. Saving energy and reducing application of chemical additives in drinking water supply Reduces sewage water volumes to be treated Economical / Marketing Benefits: Reducing water costs; both provision and disposal Innovative environmental image of the hotel development and company Possible Green Buildings certification points 10

Grey Water Treatment Changes in water flow & usage through treatment: - 30 % fresh water 50 % 50 % -40 % to -50 % sewage Recycled Grey Water 60 % Treatment Plant Irrigation or other use 40 % Sewage System 11

Typical Grey Water Treatment Process using Membrane Bio-Reactors Freshwater feed Buffer Storage and aeration tank Membrane Bio Reactor (MBR) Clear Water Storage Inflow Grey Water Overflow Overflow Overflow Operation point 12

PURE Reed Bed Sewage Treatment Plants What is a 'Reed Bed'? Concept Inspired by Nature: Constructed Wetland to Treat Water Non-Permeable Basin with Filtration layers, planted with Reeds Cost Effective, De-centralised Sewage Treatment System Easy to Operate and Maintain Acheives High Quality Treatment and Performance Hugely Flexible Design Parameters from a Single person Household to Large Labour Camps 13

Basic Principles - BAUER Design Factors To use Local Reed Plants To use Local Filtration Media (Sand / Gravel) To use Gravity where Possible to Minimise the use of Transfer Pumps / Energy To re-use the Treated Water for Irrigation / Service Water where Possible An Exceptionally Environmentally Friendly System 14

Basic Principles - 1st Stage Vertical Filtration Bed 15

Basic Principles - 2nd Stage Horizontal Filtration Bed 16

BAUER Environment Group Grey Water Systems - Small Packaged Units 17

BAUER Environment Group Grey Water Systems - Medium Size OPTION: Ultra-filtration / MBR Containerised Units 18

BAUER Environment Group Small Scale Sewage Treatment Plants BAUER offer a range of Small Scale STP's - Efficient Membrane Bio-Reactor and Ultra Filtration Options are Available 19

BAUER Environment Group PURE Reed Bed Examples Medium Sized Drilling Camp, Oman Small Labour Camp, Qatar 20

Conclusion "The best cure for a threatening water shortage is not necessarily more water; savings in water use, or discovery of new techniques of water management may offer better solutions." 21
