Sealing strips for concrete joints 2017-07-26 3 STOPO TYPE 3 The STOPO TYPE 3 sealing strips are used in construction joints (concreting on hard concrete). They are most efficient when low movement due to moderate shrinkage of concrete is expected. A concrete surface preparation must be done before bonding the strips. First, dust and laitance must be removed from the surface. Then a rubberized adhesive consisting of "STOPO LIQUID FOR SURFACE PREPARATION OF CONCRETE is applied and must dry. Finally, the strips are heated and bonded to the concrete, using a propane gas torch with a steel extension kit. 2 3 1 Dimensions: Models 1 Length 2 Width 3 Thickness Maximum advisable water head 33520 40 mm 23 mm 2 meters 35020 55 mm 23 mm 3 meters 34030 45 mm 33 mm 4 meters 37020 75 mm 23 mm 5 meters 35040 310020 312020 37040 310040 55 mm 105 mm 125 mm 75 mm 105 mm 43 mm 23 mm 23 mm 43 mm 43 mm 1s 9 meters 12 meters 15 meters 20 meters 312040 125 mm 43 mm 20 meters +

O Hard concrete Showing STOPO TYPE 3 sealing strip bonded to hard concrete surface by a thermo-fusion process. The sealing strip model is selected according to the water head. The selected model dimensions also depend on the available space between reinforcing bars. The STOPO TYPE 3 sealing strips are used commonly to perform cold construction joints (new concreting on hard concrete), where expected movement in concrete is limited to shrinkage, e.g. raising walls in reservoirs, basins, building new concrete structures on existing foundations, jointing slabs to walls at intermediate level, watertightness of pipe insert through walls, raising footings and foundations, etc

2017-07-26 8 Sealing strip for concrete joints STOPO TYPE 3.5V The STOPO TYPE 3.5V sealing strips are suitable for construction joints for walls or slabs. Their wider elastic range allows them to be installed where construction joints require greater movements in concrete, especially in tensile strength. The choice of STOPO TYPES 3,5 et 3,5V sealing strips compared to TYPE 3 is done in the case of greater anticipated movements in concrete. TYPE 3,5 for shear movement and TYPE 3,5V for tensile movement. 3a 1 3b 2 Dimensions: Models 1 Length 2 Width 3a Thickness 3b Thickness Maximum advisable water head 33040V 30 mm 23 mm 20 mm 3 meters 34060V 40 mm 33 mm 30 mm 7 meters 35060V 50 mm 33 mm 30 mm 15 meters

This is an example of a typical installation. It is the designer s responsibility to determine the set up and select the type and dimensions of the material and installation of the construction joint, according to the requirements and restraints for the work. We recommend that the strips be supported until the concrete placement has been completed. For example, a 35060V strip (shown: 1a, 1b) will have a more effective tensile strength than a 37040.5 strip (shown: 2a, 2b). On the other hand, the strip types that are made wider than long (3.5 TYPES) absorb greater shear strength movements since the elastic capacity is greater in the direction of the strip width as installed. For example, a 37040.5 strip (shown in 2a and 2b) will have a more effective shear strength than a 35060V strip (shown in 1a and 1b). 1 a 1 b 2 a 2 b (819) 362-0133

2017-07-26 11 STOPO sealing strips of TYPES 3-3.5-3.5V and «L» Installation procedure by thermal fusion. Useful tools to have on hand when installing these types of sealing strip 1. Bush hammer bits (examples shown) on drill. 2. Industrial vaccuum cleaner

STOPO sealing strips of TYPES 3-3.5-3.5V and «L» Installation method by thermal fusion (works on concrete and metallic surfaces) 2017-07-26 12 FIRST REFER TO OUR LIST OF SUGGESTED TOOLS TO PERFORM BEST INSTALLATION STEP 1: 2 1. The existing concrete surface should be cleaned and conditioned to remove laitance and any loose particles, by slight bush hammering, using a bush hammer bit on percussion tool. Pass vacuum cleaner. STEPS 2 and 3: 2. Using a detail torch kit, slightly warm up the concrete surface. 3. Apply a bed of STOPO PREPARATION LIQUID FOR CONCRETE SURFACE slightly wider than the waterstop (strip) base, using a paint brush or roller. LET DRY before proceeding to next step. STEP 4: 4. Because the STOPO PREPARATION LIQUID needs time to dry and due to other construction restraints, it may happen that the sealing strips be installed only after a certain delay. In the meantime, some dampness might have appeared to the concrete surface. When this is the case, just prior to the installation of the strips, it might be necessary to to warm up again and dry the surface of the concrete with the detail torch. Caution: when this operation is necessary, make sure that the STOPO LIQUID is dry and inert before heating the surface since IT IS VERY FLAMMABLE wet. 3. 4. STEP 5: BONDING THE SEALING STRIPS TO CONCRETE: 5a With the detail torch, heat up the bituminous surface of the strips to a slight liquefaction stage. Also heat up the free ends. 5a 5b 5b Then press the strips firmly onto the concrete surface, accomplishing at the same time butt splicing by thermally fusing the free ends together. For a vertical joint, proceed (in the sealing strip installation) from bottom to top. Hint: for a vertical joint, sometimes it may be easier and more effective to cut the standard made long strip and work up with plus or minus half-lengths. Followed on next page a description of the method to cut and splice easily sealing strip lengths using the heated knife. NOTE: The STOPO sealing strips also work very well on steel or metallic structures and surfaces, and in these cases, the STOPO preparation liquid IS NOT NECESSARY. Warning: never attempt to stretch the long strip to reach a junction point. Always cut the necessary length into a new strip and accomplish butt splicing by thermally fusing the cut free ends together using the method shown on page 13.

2017-07-26 13 Butt joint and splicing the «STOPO» sealing strips Butt splicing in any direction (lateral, longitudinal or perpendicular) is accomplished by first removing stone and/or cut the strips to the required dimensions, using a heated knife blade, then by thermally fusing the free ends or bituminous exposed surfaces obtained, pressing them together firmly. Heating the blade of a «Richard Combination Tool Ergo-grip knife» with the detail torch makes it easy to scratch the surface of, cut or splice the STOPO sealing strips. Scratching the surface with the heated knife blade to remove stone prior to thermally fusing of strip ends and sides in any direction. Bituminous exposed ends or strip sides are heated to a slight liquefaction stage and pressed together to create sealing strip joints in any direction.

2017-07-26 14 This is an example of how the STOPO preparation liquid for concrete surfaces has been spread over the concrete surface and has dried adequately. The surface has thus been prepared and is now ready for the bonding of STOPO TYPE 3 sealing strips by the thermo-fusion process.

2017-07-26 15 Construction joint installation on hard concrete with STOPO type 3 sealing strip

2017-07-26 16 Sealing joint around a pipe into formwork Procedure for concrete pipe 1. The preparation of the pipe surface is most important. First roughen contact surface and remove laitance or any loose particle with a steel brush or grinder. Working with mechanical tools is most effective. Make sure to clean and remove any dust residues following the contact surface preparation. 2. With a propane gas detail torch kit, warm up the surface of the concrete and make sure that any dampness is eliminated. 3. With a paint brush, apply a thin bed of the STOPO PREPARATION LIQUID FOR CONCRETE SURFACE (not required for metal and plastic pipes) over the warm concrete surface. LET DRY before proceeding to next step. 4. With the detail torch, heat up the bituminous surface of the STOPO TYPE 3 strips to a slight liquefaction stage. Press the strips evenly over contact surface of pipe with the hands. If more than the standard strip length is needed to go around the pipe, then proceed with butt splicing and thermally fusing the free ends together, using Ergo-Grip knife and torch as described in the previous pages. Do not overlap the free ends of strips. Cut off the excess length and bond the free ends together by thermally fusing. Procedure for steel or metal pipe 5. Proceed with STEPS 1, 2 and 4 as for concrete pipe. Same as for concrete pipe except for STEP 3 that is not required in the case of metal. The STOPO preparation liquid (for concrete surfaces) is not necessary for steel or metallic pipes. Procedure for plastic pipes 6. Proceed with STEPS 1. AND 4. only as for concrete pipe. Do not warm up the plastic pipes with the detail torch. Also, in the case of plastic pipes, DO NOT apply any STOPO PREPARATION LIQUID. Roughen the plastic pipe surface with sandpaper or steel brush. The sealing strips may be installed side by side on the pipe. The model and the number of strips required are determined according to the water head and the pipe operation (pressure, vibration stress, others). The minimum concrete cover between the exterior surface of the concrete structure and the outer side of the sealing strip must have 65 mm to ensure full effectiveness of the strips. NOTE: pressure pipes MUST be mechanically anchored to the concrete structure outside of the joint away from the sealing strips. 65 mm minimum (819) 362-0133

2017-07-26 17 Repairing and sealing a pipe opening through a wall or any concrete structure using STOPO TYPE 3 sealing strips New concreting Compacted soil 65 mm minimum 65 mm minimum Existing wall Repairing and sealing a pipe opening through wall 1. Coarsely break the concrete surface. 2. Refer to STEP 1 in the installation procedure by thermal fusion for the concrete wall surface preparation. 3. Proceed first by bonding the sealing strips to the concrete wall surface. 4. Insert pipe to its final position through opening in wall and bond the sealing strips around pipe. 5. Build the formwork for a block around pipe and pour concrete. 6. This method will ensure effective seal tight connection of large pipes through manholes or reservoirs. 7. Caution: for high pressure pipes, the designer must consider anchoring the pipes to the concrete structure.

2017-07-26 19 STOPO TYPE «L» sealing strips Standard dimensioned models offered: L5040 and L3030 STOPO TYPE L sealing strips 43 mm (L5040) 33 mm(l3030) 53 mm (L5040) 33 mm (L3030). Refer to the installation method by thermal fusion. The same method (as for TYPE 3) is used for TYPE L sealing strip, heating up both bituminous surfaces to bond either to concrete or metallic surfaces. This TYPE L sealing strip is used to repair deteriorated slabs and footings. For example, it is thus possible to pour a new concrete slab over a slab that has defective (leaking) construction joints This TYPE L sealing strip, combined with our STOFLEX closed-cell expansion joint filler, will ensure sealtightness at immediate fluid arrival. It is also possible to build construction joints on top of the new slab by first placing a STOPO TYPE 3, 312020 model sealing strip (see this detail on page 5) over the existing slab aligned with the new construction joint. It is otherwise possible to install this TYPE L strip along with a metal waterstop for increased sealtightness protection.

2017-07-26 20 Joining new slab to existing slab and wall using STOPO TYPE L sealing strip New concreting over existing concrete. Option: our STOFLEX closed-cell expansion joint filler works very well when combined to the STOPO sealing strips. 2017-07-26 22 STOPO TYPE 0 (no stone) The STOPO TYPE 0 (no stone on) sealing strips or plaques are used to seal between two separate hard concrete structures. They may be used also to seal between concrete and steel surfaces. They are efficient when low structural movement is expected. As advised for TYPE 3 installation method, laitance, dust and any loose particles must be cleaned off from the surfaces in contact with the strips. The same installation method as for the TYPE 3 sealing strips, by thermal fusion, is used. 2017-07-26 23 Joining PVC waterstops and STOPO sealing strips 1. Heat up the blade of the Richard «Combination tool Ergo-grip» (knife) with a propane gas torch. 2. With the hot knife blade, make a cut into the STOPO strip half deep only and to separate it into two parts. Joining PVC waterstop and STOPO 3. With the torch, heat up the inside of the strip cut until slight liquefaction appears at bottom of cut. 4. Immediately insert the PVC waterstop inside the STOPO strip opening. 5. Apply hand pressure along the sides of the STOPO strip to the PVC waterstop. A bitumen cord should appear on the surface if the STOPO strip was well heated. Maintain this pressure during few minutes. checking that the bitumen has fully integrated the roughness of the PVC waterstop surface.

2017-07-26 24 Limited warranty: The STOPO products are guaranteed against manufacturing defects. If products had to be defective, the warranty is limited to replacement of products before their confinement in concrete. Misuse and poor storage void this warranty.
