ULMA S COMPROMISE & CONTRIBUTION TO LEED CERTIFICATION
UNDERSTANDING LEED Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design- LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (US- GBC), LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. The certification process assures a high level of commitment with sustainability principles. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification. There are four levels of certification - the number of points a project earns determines the level of LEED certification that the project will receive. CERTIFICATION THRESHOLDS ARE LEED certified LEED silver LEED gold LEED platinum 40-49 points 50-59 points 60-79 points 80 points CREDIT CATEGORIES There are several credit categories. Within each of the credit categories, there are specific prerequisites that projects must satisfy and a variety of credits that projects can pursue to earn points. HERE IT IS A DETAILED EXPLANATION OF EACH AREA SUSTAINABLE SITES ULMA CAN CONTRIBUTE TO OUR PROJECT, IN UP TO 2 POINTS IN THIS AREA SS.C7.1 HEAT ISLAND HEAT_NON ROOF Concerned with the reduction of heat islands to minimize impacts on microclimates and human and wildlife habitats in the surroundings (non roof) and the building (roof). The criteria of these two credits do not apply to vertical facades, however the ULMA Ventilated Facade systems can be applied in angled and horizontal solutions in which the color of the panels can directly influence the probability of obtaining the credits. In the case of SS.C7.1, the system can be used to create architectural devices or structures which provide shade to the buildings surroundings be it pedestrian areas, car parking or rest areas. In this case the finish to the structure and hence the polymer panels need to have a SRI 29 which can easily be achieved by a wide range of ULMA colors. SS.C7.1 HEAT ISLAND HEAT_ROOF The ULMA s ventilated facade system can help to achieve the credit SS.C7.2 when it is used in facades and roofs with an inclination of less than 60º. Polymer concrete panels can be delivered in colors and finishes that satisfy the IRS criteria 29 for steep sloped roofs and 78 in the case of low-sloped roofs ( 2:12 or 9º). ULMA complies with this criteria. ULMA has already certified the SRI for two of their color ranges: Plate M05 with an SRI=92 and Plate M10 with an SRI = 73 Other examples of the ULMA color range could also fulfill the requirements. ENERG AND ATMOSPHERE ULMA CAN CONTRIBUTE TO OUR PROJECT, IN UP TO 19 POINTS IN THIS AREA EA.PR2 MINIMUN ENERG PERFORMANCE / EA.C01 OPTIMIZE ENERG PERFORMANCE This prerequisite and credit achieves increasing levels of energy performance to reduce environmental and economic impacts associated with excessive energy use. The ULMA s ventilated facade system can help to achieve credits in these issues thanks to a number of complementary strategies. 1. 2. CLIMATE INTERIOR COMFORT ENVIRONMENT EXTERIOR The positive effect of a ventilated air cavity, is especially useful in hot climates such as the tropics. Accumulated heat gain within the cavity is expulsed by means of a stack affect within the cavity reducing the building thermal load and subsequent cooling energy demand. In colder climates and winter seasons this cavity is also beneficial creating a thermal buffer between the insulated building envelope and the external cold air. The possibility of incorporating large thicknesses of thermal insulation in the air cavity: The standard systems allow for up to 26cm of thermal insulation offering a highly efficient thermal envelope which can greatly reduce heat losses and reduce the demand for heating within the building. Additionally exceptional thicknesses can be achieved on demand with bespoke solutions. 3. 4. CLIMATE INTERIOR COMFORT ENVIRONMENT EXTERIOR Removal of thermal bridging. The ventilated facade solution allows for a continuous layer of thermal insulation removing all potential thermal bridges in the facade. Compared to conventional solutions the perforation of the thermal envelope is minimal and greatly improves the energy efficiency of the building. Atmospheric control. A ventilated facade offers protection against rain water, extreme sun exposure and humidity which could otherwise damage the insulation reducing its thermal properties. Although the number of points achievable by using an ULMA s system cannot be specified it can be said that the solution positively contributes to the achievement of all credit levels provided that it is integrated with other energy efficient elements and systems in the building.
MATERIALS AND RESOURCES ULMA CAN CONTRIBUTE TO OUR PROJECT, IN UP TO 6 POINTS IN THIS AREA MR.C2 CONSTRUCTION WASTE MANAGEMENT As an industrialized and prefabricated system, the ULMA ventilated facade system contributes to achieving this requirement by reducing the volume of waste generated during the construction works, and therefore facilitating construction waste management and achieving recycling credits targets. MR.C3 MATERIALS REUSE ULMA s products allows reuse thanks to their industrialized and dry construction system that allow easy disassembly of parts and reassembly at new locations. 1 point is awarded where at least 5% of materials are reused, or 2 points where reuse accounts for at least 10% MR.C4 RECCLED CONTENT 1 point is awarded where recycled content accounts for at least 10% of materials used, or 2 points where recycled content is at least 20%. The ULMA system is made up of several components which could offer some recycled postconsumer content; the aluminum usually used for the substructure contains up to 50% recycled material and this component accounts for up to 25% of the system. Additionally, on demand, ULMA could guarantee a 100% recycled aluminum source for all of the sub structure components. MR.C5 REGIONAL MATERIALS 1 point is awarded when at least 10% of materials have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles (800km) of the project site or 2 points where at least 20% is within 500 miles. (800km) 100% of our entire facade systems is manufactured in companies within 310 miles (500km) of our manufacturing facility in Oñati, Gipuzkoa, Spain. In the case of asking for recycled aluminum we could guarantee that it is recovered (extraction) within 200miles (320km) of our manufacturing plant. This means that project within a radius of 190miles (300km) can contribute to these points.
INDOOR ENVIROMENTAL QUALIT ULMA CAN CONTRIBUTE TO OUR PROJECT, IN UP TO 2 POINTS IN THIS AREA IEQ.04.2 LOW EMITTING MATERIALS PAINTS AND COATINGS ULMA s ventilated systems can be used as a finish in the interior of buildings such as hotels, company headquarters, etc...
