CURRICULUM ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING Renewable energy is one of the focus areas in the development of North Karelia province. Joensuu region is nationally responsible for the bioeconomy theme in the Innovative Towns programme. Karelia University of Applied Sciences is a central actor in the know-how cluster of Joensuu bioeconomy, which enables you to learn in cooperation with working life. As a student of energy and environmental technology you can network with national and international expert communities and become an expert in the field. Degree Degree Title Extent Bachelor of Engineering 240 cr / 4 years Typical Tasks for Graduates As a Bachelor of Engineering, you develop environmentally friendly business systems, you plan renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions as well as measure and analyse the state of the environment. You work as an environmental expert in enterprises and take part in planning and implementing of products, services and production processes. You get the ability to work in planning, research, product development and authoritative tasks and as an entrepreneur in the field of energy and environment. You can also aim at international career. Your employers can be industrial companies, the service sector in the field of environment and energy, planning and consulting offices, waste management companies, energy and water supply plants, environmental and technical services in the public sector as well as environmental administration. Your employment possibilities in the field of renewable energy and environmental business are supported by several bio-refinery investments and dynamic small-business activity in eastern Finland. The field is also nationally and internationally growing. Your expertise is needed in business fields where highly value-added products are refined from local renewable raw materials. Your professional title can be, for example, energy advisor, energy entrepreneur, environmental engineer, quality and environmental engineer, waste management advisor, environmental protection inspector and secretary, environmental designer or environmental expert.
Implementation of Studies Our cooperation with regional working life partners gives you great opportunities to network with working life even during your studies. You strengthen your know-how in projects and during practical training and by implementing tasks commissioned by working life partners. In your learning you utilise versatile learning environments and methods. Part of your studies or practical training you can do in our international partner institutions. In addition, part of the courses are implemented in cooperation with our international partners, and exchange teachers and students also visit classes. Part of the studies are conducted in English. The thesis at the end of your studies is commissioned by a company or other working life organisation. The centre of Bioeconomy you create connections in the field by doing joint studies with forestry students. Our extensive expert network supports and counsels you in your studies. Structure and Content of Studies The degree programme contains working life related core and complementary studies. The extent of basic studies is 210 cr. and that of complementary studies 30 cr. The core studies include 30 cr of practical training and a 15-credit thesis. The thesis process is divided into three 5-credit courses. Each course can be completed at different stages of studies. However, the thesis plan needs to be accepted before the implementation phase. At the beginning of your studies you familiarise yourself with the engineering field and gain basic skills in mathematics and natural sciences needed in problem solving. In addition, you familiarise yourself with energy and environmental technology processes and working environment. You will also be able to take part in working life commissions. You get well acquainted with business opportunities in the field. This is the basis of the core competence of your degree in renewable energy and environmental management, which will deepen in the course of your studies. In addition, you strengthen your professional language and communication skills. The complementary studies mostly contain modules of 1edits. Complementary studies are scheduled to take place during the spring semester of the third year and the fourth academic year with the exception of refresher courses. Refresher courses in languages and mathematics take place during the first year of studies. You can also complete part of complementary studies as summer courses. Participation in Sports Academy training, peer tutoring or student union activities, as well optional language studies can be spread over several semesters. If the studies mentioned above do not match with your professional objectives, you can discuss other alternatives with your teacher tutor or counsellor.
