Technical information GPS Safety Summary tert.-butanol Substance name tert-butanol CAS-No. 75-65-0 General Statement Tert-Butanol is mainly an intermediate for the production of other chemicals. But to a minor extent it is used as a solubiliser in various products. The substance is a low molecular weight, highly flammable liquid of moderate volatility which solidifies below 25 C. Therefore exposure is limited if handled with usual precautions. If the risk management recommendations mentioned under RISK MANAGEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS are observed the substance can be handled safely. Chemical identity Name tert-butanol Brand names tert.-butanol anhydrous, tert.-butanol azeotropic Chemical name (IUPAC) 2-methyl-2-propanol CAS number 75-65-0 Molecular formula Structure Chemical characterization Synonyms C4H10O (CH3)3C-OH Branched C4-Alcohol 1,1-dimethylethanol tertiary butyl alcohol trimethyl methanol TBA AG GPS Safety Summary November 2011 Version 1 page 1/7
Uses and application As an mainly intermediate Tert.-Butanol is a starting material for the production for example of tert.-butyl peroxides as polymerization initiators. Furthermore the intermediate use covers use as an alkylating agent for various products, or production of various tert-butyl esters as precursors for antioxidants, phenolic resins, pharmaceutical products and perfumes. Due to its good dissolving properties and also good solubility in polar and non-polar substances, TBA is outstandingly suitable as a solvent and as a solubilizer, for example in water-based paints, for the dewaxing of oils and as a denaturing agent for Ethanol. However the main use is as intermediate for or a byproduct within the production of high volume chemicals. Physical/chemical properies Tertiary butyl alcohol is a low molecular weight, highly flammable liquid of moderate volatility. It freezes/melts around 25 C and will either be present as a colorless liquid with a camphor-like odor or an off-white solid block depending on ambient temperature.the liquid is lighter than water, miscible with water, while vapors are heavier than air. Property Value Physical state Liquid below 25 C or solid block Color Colorless Odor of Campher Density 0,775 g/cm3 (30 C) Vapor heavier than air Melting / boiling point ca. 25 C / 82,0-83,0 C (1013 hpa) Flammability highly flammable liquid F flammability limits 2.3% (V) - 8% (V) Explosive Properties No explosive properties Self-ignition temperature 490 C Method: DIN 51794 Vapor pressure 40,7 hpa (20 C) Molecular weight 74 g/mol Water solubility Miscible (20 C) Flash point < 21 C Method: DIN EN ISO 13736 Octanol-water partition coefficient log Pow: 0,3 AG GPS Safety Summary November 2011 Version 1 page 2/7
Health effects Effect Assessment Result Acute toxicity (oral, dermal and inhalation) Eye / Skin irritation Sensitization Toxicity after repeated exposure Genotoxicity/mutagenicity Carcinogenicity Toxicity for reproduction Low acute toxicity, but narcotic effects and respiratory irritation at very high concentrations possible Slight skin and moderate eye irritation Not considered to be sensitizing Target organ effects specific to rodents are not relevant to human health Not mutagenic / genotoxic Not considered to be a human cancer concern No adverse effects on fertility and not selectively toxic to the fetus The human health toxicological hazards of tertiary butyl alcohol indicate low acute toxicity by the oral, dermal and inhalation routes of exposure although it is classified according to EU-GHS ordinance 1272/2008 as harmful by inhalation. Transient signs of altered nervous system function (commonly observed with short-chain alcohol exposure) are observed with exposure to high levels. Slight skin and moderate eye irritation have been observed from contact to liquid but there is no evidence of allergic skin reactions. High air concentrations are reported to cause respiratory irritation. Tertiary butyl alcohol is readily absorbed through the skin and by oral exposure or respiration. Effects noted in repeated-exposure studies in rodents reveal target organ effects specific to rodents and are not relevant to human health. Tests conducted in bacteria, mammalian cells and in animals demonstrate tertiary butyl alcohol is not mutagenic/genotoxic. Long term toxicity studies conducted on rats and mice have found tumours to occur in the kidneys of male rats and thyroids of mice. These findings have been examined through mechanistic studies and expert reviews of the tissue specimens demonstrating the tumours arose from rodent-specific tumour formation characteristics that would not be expected to occur in humans. There were no specific effects observed in studies of reproduction and developmental toxicity conducted in rats. Non-specific effects on development were observed but at exposure levels that also caused effects in parental animals indicating that developing animals are not more sensitive to toxicity. Environmental effects Effect Assessment Aquatic toxicity Result Low toxicity to water organisms Fate and Behavior Biodegradation Bioaccumulation potential PBT / vpvb conclusion Result Inherently biodegradable Not bioaccumulative Neither considered to be PBT nor vpvb Photochemical degradation takes place. The Log Kow value for tertiary butyl alcohol is low, indicating a tendency to partition to aqueous phases and a low potential for bioaccumulation. In addition, tertiary butyl alcohol is inherently biodegradable, and is not expected to be persistent in the environment. Tertiary butyl alcohol was not found to present an ecotoxicity hazard based on the results of acute and chronic studies. Three trophic levels of aquatic species (two species for chronic tests) and one terrestrial species were tested. Therefore it is not a PBT (Persistent, Bioaccumulative, Toxic) substance. Exposure Human health h Tert-Butanol is produced within the EEC with about a million tons per year where the most of it is used as an intermediate with minimized exposure. For other uses especially as a solubilizer the percentage in the used products e.g. coatings and cleaning products is very low. Based on model calculations if the Risk Management Measures under Risk management Recommendations are observed the expected concentrations at workplace where values below the no effect levels. For consumer use where no personal protective measures are presumed to be in use for limitation of exposure it is essential to observe the instructions on product packaging. Environment Based on model calculations if the Risk Management Measures under Risk management Recommendations are observed the expected concentrations in the aquatic environment are below the predicted no effect level in fresh water. Risk management recommendations Industry use, production and formulation Assumes a good basic standard of occupational hygiene is implemented. Handle substance within a closed system. Ensure material transfers are under containment or extract ventilation. Provide extract ventilation to points where emissions occur. Clear transfer lines prior to de-coupling. Flush and drain and down system prior to equipment break-in or maintenance. Retain drain downs in sealed storage pending disposal or for subsequent recycle Adequate closed storage facilities (e.g., bulk storage tanks, intermediate bulk containers, drums) are needed. All formulation activity is assumed to involve a predominantly enclosed process. No direct release to soil and surface water. Consumer use Clear spills immediately Adult use only Observe instructions on the package of paints and cleaning.
