Parabit DUO Hot Melt System Icopal is a member of the Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association (LRWA). As an association, LRWA s guiding principle is to ensure that clients obtain high quality liquid-applied roofing, through a partnership of quality assured manufacturers and contractors. Due to the absence of specific legislation or guidance notes, the LRWA recently published a new code of practice for hot melt membranes aimed at providing guidance to specifiers on topics such as health & safety, substrate preparation, product application, and on site quality control, repair and maintenance. www.lrwa.org.uk
PARABIT DUO Liquid applied waterproofing from Icopal Introduction PARABIT DUO Hot Melt Waterproofing System is a hot applied tough and very flexible monolithic waterproofing membrane system manufactured from a special blend of bitumen, synthetic rubbers, polymers and other additives which, when combined with a spun-bond polyester fabric and high performance elastomeric membrane, is ideal for use in protected/inverted roofs, plaza decks and green roof installations. The PARABIT DUO System is heated and then applied as a liquid directly to the prepared structural deck. It forms a full continuous bond to the substrate which means that there is no risk of water tracking beneath the membrane, and because it is monolithic and completely seamless there is no risk of lap failure. Designed for concrete substrates, PARABIT DUO Hot Melt Waterproofing System provides the optimum waterproofing solution, where large roof areas can be covered very quickly permitting the progression of other trades internally. Features: Ideal solution for concrete flat roof constructions. Greater than mm thick when completed. Fully bonded waterproofing membrane. Traditional two layer hot melt application technique. High performance elastomeric membranes compliment the monolithic hot melt waterproofing membrane. Rootbar membranes incorporating root inhibitors available for green roof applications. Complimentary ancillary products include expansion joint, angle reinforcement, drainage boards, insulation and water reducing membrane etc.
Parabit DUO Hot Melt System Benefits: Quick to apply and cure, PARABIT DUO can be installed in far less time than traditional pour and roll or torch-on waterproofing membranes, reducing overall roofing costs. Detailing such as upstands and plinths can be completed before main system application, so the time of skilled subcontractors is used most effectively. This also allows followon trades such as cladding installers, to complete their work before installation of the main roof area, limiting the risk of damage to the main waterproofing installation. The application of the hot melt membrane typically occurs earlier in the construction process allowing other, follow on trades the opportunity to commence internal works. A continuous system without seams, the waterproofing adheres tenaciously to the entire surface of the roof deck to eliminate water migration and moisture build-up on the surface of the substrate. The membrane retains its self-healing characteristics throughout its working life, maintaining waterproofing integrity even after minor construction or maintenance punctures. Can be applied in low temperatures helping to maximise installer productivity. The surface is impervious to snow, frost and rain immediately after the waterproofing is applied. Guarantees Our guarantees are reputedly the most comprehensive in the roofing market. They are supported by a series of Insurance policies arranged with first class security in the London Insurance Market. Several different levels of guarantee are available dependant upon the specific circumstances of the project, the clients requirements, product choice and period of cover. Icopal guarantees can include the following elements: Product failure - including full roof replacement Icopal design Workmanship Contractor insolvency Consequential damage Approved Contractors Our Guaranteed Roofing Systems are installed by trained IMA and Team Icopal approved roofing contractors, providing national coverage. IMA and Team Icopal contractors are trained in all disciplines and vetted and monitored by Icopal to ensure the highest level of quality and service are maintained.
System Overview The PARABIT DUO Hot Melt Waterproofing Membrane is ideal for inverted roof constructions above a concrete substrate where there is a requirement to achieve a waterproof barrier early on in the construction process. Substrates A sufficient bond will be achieved between PARABIT DUO and a range of suitable substrates, including insitu and precast structural concrete. The substrate should be uniform and have a wood float or fine broom finish, prior to being primed to increase the bond of the membrane. Test bonds should be conducted before the start of each working area to confirm the suitability of the substrate to receive the PARABIT DUO membrane. Concretes with high moisture percentages require a minimum curing period of 8 days to ensure adequate drying. Alternative Icopal primers may be required to improve bond strength. System Composition The standard system comprises of an initial surface primer which improves adhesion of the waterproofing to the substrate. Installation of the PARABIT DUO Hot Melt membrane commences with the application of a base layer of PARABIT Hot Melt compound applied at approximately kg/m² using a suitable squeegee to a depth of approximately mm. The PARABIT DUO Reinforcing Fabric is immediately laid into the base layer and brushed to ensure complete embedment and subsequently covered with a further mm coat of PARABIT Hot Melt Compound. Whilst still hot, the Power Elastomeric 0 Sand Capsheet* is rolled into the top coat to complete the waterproofing membrane. All side and head laps of the capsheet are sealed for added security. Follow On Trades The sequence of works in relation to other building elements and trade should be considered prior to commencement.. Substrate.. Primer.. PARABIT Hot Melt Compound (base layer).. PARABIT DUO Reinforcing Fabric.. PARABIT Hot Melt Compound (top layer).. Power Elastomeric 0 Sand Capsheet*. The hot applied PARABIT DUO membrane bonds completely with previously laid membrane which means details can be completed first allowing other trades to complete the fabric of the building before the main roof area is completed, thereby shortening construction times and minimising risk of damage to the critical waterproofing layer. *On green roof projects Rootbar Sand Capsheet is used in place of the Power Elastomeric 0.
Parabit DUO Hot Melt System Roof Types: There are generally four types of roof in which PARABIT DUO Hot Melt Waterproofing System is used: Inverted Warm Roof Sometimes referred to as an upside down roof, the thermal insulation is positioned above the roof covering, resulting in the roof covering, structural deck and ceiling being at a temperature close to that of the interior of the building. Since the insulation is above the waterproofing system the insulation must be water-resistant and it must be ballasted to prevent floatation of the insulation boards and to protect against wind uplift. Therefore, the roof deck must be capable of withstanding the additional loading of a ballasted roof. Plaza / Podium Decks Many modern buildings incorporate landscaped or paved areas over basement or subterranean areas such as car parks. These areas are often used as recreation or circulation space between buildings. Being roofs they still require a durable waterproofing system to be installed. Green Roof Extensive or intensive green roof build-ups can be installed above the completed hot melt waterproofing layer, acting as ballast and a water attenuation system. For further assistance on green roofs, please refer to the Icopal Green Roof Brochure or contact Icopal s Technical Department. Terraces/ Balconies A balcony is typically on the outside of a building accessed from a window or door enclosed by a suitable handrail. Terraces tend to be areas within the footprint of the building providing recreational access for public foot traffic. 7

Suitable Ballasting is required to restrain the inverted roof insulation board to prevent flotation and resist wind uplift forces. Ballasting may also be used on heavily trafficked roofs, such as podium roofs and terraces. Ballast is typically in the form of 0 0mm diameter river-washed stone, or 0 mm thick concrete paving slabs on support pads. Alternatively, the system may be covered by a green roof system, which would include drainage board, planting substrate and vegetation layers. 0
