Having a mentor can be valuable at any stage in your professional career, but it can be especially beneficial if you are working towards your career progression and professional membership. Finding a mentor If you are working towards continuous professional development, or have another professional goal, a mentor can be hugely valuable in helping you on your journey. Ideally, you should look for a mentor that already holds the same chartered title or professional grade that you are working towards. There are a number of ways in which you can find a mentor: Through your work your organisation may have a mentoring system in place or you could approach a senior colleague yourself. Through networking you may be able to find a mentor through the recommendation of a colleague or by attending events such as EI local branch events. Benefits of working with a mentor: focused career development advice and guidance management skills development access to networks and contacts Increased confidence. Becoming a mentor Being a mentor can be a hugely rewarding experience. If you are a professional member with the EI or with related professional membership, becoming a mentor means that you can play your part in developing the next generation of professionals. Benefits of becoming a mentor include: improved communication skills personal development increased professional status the satisfaction of discovering/nurturing talent. What does being a mentor involve? The mentoring relationship is expected to be conducted mainly by phone or email; however, if you work in the same organisation or are geographically near each other, you may choose to meet with your mentee. We would expect you to have contact with your mentee 3-4 times a year. For more information, please see Appendix for the Mentoring Guidance Document. 7

What type of activities count as CPD? Anything that develops your knowledge, skills and understanding in the workplace can count towards your professional development even though you do need to plan your development so that the activities help with your goals The programme encourages members to focus on the learning outcomes achieved - what they got out of an activity - and develop a reflective approach to their learning. Professional development can involve, but is not limited to, the following activities: work-based activities CPD programme modules on the job learning & development training courses webinars and online learning self-development through private study reading and research preparation and delivery of lectures and presentations lectures, seminars or conferences attendance secondments and special projects involvement in professional groups and committees recording monthly activities on CPD form quarterly report on mycareerpath Recording your CPD All professional members are expected to keep full records of their CPD. The EI does not stipulate the maximum number of hours' CPD which must be undertaken. Instead, members are encouraged to focus on the value of their learning activities in relation to their professional career development needs. Participants should review their development needs on a regular basis, set professional development targets and goals Adopt a reflective approach to their practice, reviewing their activities and experiences, and reflecting on what has been learned. The following tools can be used for recording professional development MyCareerPath: This is the EI's free to use online professional development system, which allows you to plan and log your professional experience in an easy to use electronic format. You can also use it to create reports to summarise your CPD at the end of each quarter. CPD Record Form: This is a simple downloadable template for recording your development every month end.
