Selection Process: Ranked based on the combined interview score and application score. To earn points, applicants must submit written documentation (refer to application scoring page) with their application. Points scored on application and during interview will determine rank and invitation to pre-employment training. Applicants who successfully complete pre-employment training will be placed in rank order on an eligible for dispatch list. Applicants will be notified of acceptance to the program in writing and must attend an orientation class before they are sent to work. Note: Operating Engineers Training and most of the signatory Employers will require an apprentice to take a pre-hire drug test when dispatched. Availability of Jobs (Waiting List): This notice does not mean that we have immediate job openings, but is used to establish a waiting list for use when jobs become available. Most work opportunities are in the summer months. Geographical Area: Oregon: All Counties Washington: Clark, Klickitat, Skamania, Cowlitz, Wahkiakum Counties and the southern half of Pacific counties.

The Work: Operating Engineer Equipment Operators operate one or several types of power construction equipment, such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, pumps, derricks, rubber-tired backhoes, excavators, tractors, or front-end loaders to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement on a construction site. An equipment operator must also build a knowledge base in grades and stakes, health and safety, and project organization to meet the needs of the industry. Working Conditions: The work is outdoors and varied, depending on the weather. Bad weather can shut down jobs and the machinery is generally not operated in heavy snow or rain. The average operator works 1,200 to 1,500 hours per year; some get less work, depending on their skills. Apprentices are sometimes required to commute long distances or to relocate for a few weeks or months to obtain employment. Apprentices must be flexible and adaptable to different environments, job sites and requirements. Wages and Benefits: Registered Operating Engineer Apprentices start at 80% of Journeyman wage and are re-evaluated every six months for advancement. Period OJT Hours % of journey level rate 1 st 0 to 2,000 80% of average wage 2 nd 2,001 to 4,000 85% of average wage 3 rd 4,001 to 6,000 90% of average wage 4 th 6,001 to 8,000 95% of average wage The Apprenticeship: The apprenticeship consists of 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and an additional 640 hours of related classroom instruction. Related training is usually conducted at the Engineer Training Facility in Canby, Oregon. Apprentice must attend 80 hours of Related Training in the spring and fall. Satisfactory progress must be maintained in related training classes. It takes approximately 4 years to complete the program. The Work: Heavy Duty Repairer: Site and Shop Mechanic Heavy Duty Repairer (HDR) diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment, such as cranes, bulldozers, graders, and conveyors, used in construction, logging, and surface mining. HDR s work keeps the equipment productive. They are usually responsible for fueling equipment, changing oil, routine preventative maintenance, and repair on the heavy equipment and machinery. HDR s are also responsible for fabrication work, troubleshooting, and shop / job site cleanliness. Working Conditions: Work is usually conducted outdoors in various weather conditions; however some HDR s work in a shop or indoor setting. HDR s may have to travel great distances to work sites. TE s learn the use and care of survey hand tools, rods, chains. They also learn slope staking, leveling, radial staking, hubs, points, GPS operation, note keeping and sketches, computations and coordinate geometry, plans and plan reading/interpretation, data collection/manipulation, data collectors and computer use, and gradechecking.
