Structural Insulating Panels What are SIPS? The Insulspan Structural Insulating Panel (SIP) System consists of performance rated oriented strand board (OSB) structurally laminated to a core of insulation. Insulspan SIPS provides building owners with a proven method of constructing walls and roofs resulting in real energy cost savings while adding resale value to the building. Insulspan SIPS use closed-cell rigid EPS insulation cores which helps reduce air leakage and thermal bridging by providing a continuous layer of thermal insulation in both wall and roof assemblies. For over 28 years, Insulspan has been leading the industry in the development and manufacturing of structural insulated panels. Insulspan SIP System Options The Insulspan SIP System can be purchased as 4 by SIP Panels, Precut & Fabricated or Ready-toAssemble Panels. Each panel option requires varying degrees of expertise in working with SIPS both in terms of design knowledge and on-site fabrication requirements. OPTION 1: 4 by SIP Panels The basic panel option is to purchase Insulspan SIPs as 4 by units and complete all fabrication on site using skilled tradesmen familiar with SIPs. Insulspan SIPs are delivered to the fabrication location specified by the purchaser in dimensions from 4 foot by 8 foot up to 4 foot by 24 foot. Fabrication of SIPs to the required end use dimensions and insertion of connection material is completed using detail drawings prepared for the purchaser by a design professional familiar with SIP construction. It is important to highlight that this option requires construction on site using skilled tradesmen. OPTION 2: Pre-Cut, Fabricated Panels The second option is to purchase fabricated panels that are custom precut by Insulspan to match details prepared for the purchasers design professional. All panels are specifically shaped for the project and come to the job labeled and ready to start assembly. Fabricated panels will still need to have the connection splines and any structural lumber installed on site. In general, no cutting of panels is required in the field unless minor modifications are required as a result of differences between the approved shop drawings and the 2
SIP Options actual on-site conditions. These modifications will need to be incorporated into the final shop drawings. Before panels are modified on site, an Insulspan representative should be consulted to ensure structural aspects are considered. Advantages of this option include: 1. Allows the purchaser to manage on-site work force and keep work in the field for crews versus having the connection splines and any structural lumber completed by the manufacturer. 2. Since minimal or no field fabrication of the panels may be required, assembly of the panels can start immediately. 3. The purchaser has the option of having project-specific drawings prepared by their own design professional or using Insulspan in-house design staff to prepare shop drawings for review and approval prior to manufacturing. Ready-to-Assemble Panels The third option is to use the Insulspan industryleading ready-to-assemble (RTA) building system. Using this option all panel connection splines and structural lumber are pre-installed where possible. However, it does not eliminate the need for assembly in the field of panel components required to create openings such as windows and doors. Project-specific shop drawings are typically prepared using Insulspan in-house design staff for review and approval prior to manufacturing. Advantages of this option include: 1. 2. 3. 4. RTA Panels reduce construction time in the field. Improves efficiency in construction scheduling. Integrates all architectural and structural elements. Reduces construction loan financing time. 3
