RITTER Neutralization Paste VA 55 1 kg paste for 80 120 m welding seam 6 x 1,5 kg RITTER neutralisation paste is an alkaline substance for neutralizing acidic pickling products or waste water Thoroughly shake product! After finishing the pickling process apply a uniform thick layer of the paste onto the welding seams wetted with pickling paste. Rinse by means of high pressure water. Pickling protects stainless steel Short description of the technology applied for treating stainless steel surfaces Purpose Stainless steels owe their corrosion resistance to a microscopic thin oxidic protective film, the so-called passive film. The basic requirement for the formation of an untarnished and effective passive layer is a clean and faultless metallic surface. The purpose of chemical surface treatment, i.e. pickling, is to remove impurities (welding scale, oxide films, oxidation stains, extraneous rust and metallic matter pressed into the surface by mechanical treatment) as well as surface discontinuities such as organic impurities impeding the formation of a perfect passive film. 1. Preparation The surfaces to be pickled have to be free of oil, fats, paint and adhesive residues. The surface has to be dry and tempered (> 5 C). Seite 4
2. Pickling 2.1. RITTER Pickling Paste RITTER pickling pastes remove oxidation stains and scale in the welding seam area and in zones influenced by heat as well as extraneous rust. Flux residues have to be removed before starting the pickling process. RITTER pickling paste has to be thoroughly stirred before use and then to be uniformly applied using a pickling brush so that the zones to be pickled are liberally covered by the paste. After use the can has to be closed. Depending on the severity of scaling, 1 kg RITTER pickling paste is sufficient to treat 80 150 m welding seam. Depending on the severity of scaling the soak time with stainless steels amount to unstabilized (e.g. 1.4301) 10 60 minutes stabilized (e.g. 1.4571) 30 120 minutes Afterwards thorough rinsing with water is required. Stubborn but loosened scale can be removed with stainless steel brushes or high pressure cleaning equipment. Simple neutralization of the RITTER pickling paste is possible using RITTER neutralization paste (see point 3). Note: RITTER pickling paste does not contain hydrochloric acid or chlorides. 2.2. RITTER Pickling Spray RITTER pickling spray cleans surfaces and removes oxidation stains and welding scale in one operation. By adding an indicator the spray process is easily to be controlled and uniform application of the spray is ensured. The indicator inhibits in an optimum way the formation of toxic nitrous gases, has a degreasing effect on the surface and prevents the development of nitrite in the waste water when performing the pickling process. The indicator has to be added before the application of the RITTER pickling spray. The indicator is supplied together with the spray in the required proportion. One bag of indicator has to be added to the spray in the original packing unit and has to be vigorously shaken. The homogenization process has to be repeated after approx. 5 minutes. The prepared RITTER pickling spray has now to be uniformly applied by means of spray equipment at a working pressure of 3 6 bar. The yield rate lies at 2 5 sqm per kg RITTER pickling spray. The soak time is 30 90 minutes depending on the severity of scaling. There is not objection to prolonged soak times. After finishing the pickling process the RITTER pickling spray has to be carefully washed off using high pressure cleaning equipment. The average water consumption amounts to approx. 15 ltr/sqm. The working pressure has to be at least 130 bar! The spray equipment has to be cleaned after termination of the spraying process. The pickling spray contained in the spray hose has to be retransferred to the can by means of a pump. The spray equipment has to be rinsed with water until the discharged water is clear. Remaining water in the pump has to be removed by rotating the pump. Empty cans/containers have to be rinsed with water so that the indicator color is removed. Seite 5
Notes: In order to ensure uniform distribution of the RITTER pickling spray, the spray distance to the object should be approx. 50 cm. For removing the pickling spray by means of high pressure water the surface has first to be rinsed long enough with a flat spray nozzle to ensure a chemically neutral surface and then the welding seam areas have to be sujected to a final cleaning process with a circular section nozzle at minimum possible distance. The neutrality of the rinsed surface should be checked with indicator paper. Water of drinking quality has to be used for cleaning. If the customer insists on rinsing with water containing no chloride, salt free water, pur condensate or distallate has to be used. 2.3. Passivation Self passivation of the pickled stainless steel surfaces by reaction with the oxygen from the air may take several days depending on the micro climatic ambient conditions. During this period the materials are subjected to external influences. Local or areal corrosion phenomena (rust formation) may occur. It is therefore useful to effect the immediate creation of the passive film by applying a passivation solution. The passivation solution is applied on smaller surfaces by means of a brush and on larger surfaces with a spray equipment. The yield rate amounts to 8 10 sqm/kg. The surface has to be rinsed with clean water after a soak time of minimum 30 minutes. 3. Waste Water Neutralization Feeding of pickling wate waters into the sewage system or waste water tanks is according to the valid central or local administration regulations concerning the water conservation law permissible only after neutralization and precipitation of the substances contained in the water. The waste water has therefore to be treated and purified correspondingly. Neutralization and precipitation of substances contained in the waste water with 10% lime milk, filtration including draining of the clean and filtered water and disposal of the pressed or air dried sediment containing heavy metals by an authorized company has proven to be a practical solution. In order to achieve optimum precipitation of the substances contained in the water (Fe, Cr, Ni and fluorides) and optimum setting of the permissible ph value of the waste water, it is recommended to check whether a ph value of 9.5 has been reached during the neutralization process and the achievable quanitative sedimentation should be supported by corresponding agitation of the fluid (stirring or blowing-in of compressed air). 4. Safety Measures When handling and processing chemical products the protective and safety measures specified in the product relevant EC safety data sheets have to be strictly observed. The use of safety clothing and respiratory protective equipment is mandatory. Seite 6
