A big robust plant type which will reward you if you are aiming at the top end yields. 118 CRM Top end yield potential Dent corn/softer starch Good disease package. NEW Planting Maize seed, large by nature, maintains high energy reserves allowing for fast early vigorous growth. It also demonstrates the best option for early plantings as many hybrids from our breeding program portray excellent cold tolerance & early vigour. Maize is able to be planted deeper than most other plant species. This allows planting to be optimized based on where the moisture is within the soil profile. Waiting until soil temperatures reach 12C o & above at planting depth will allow for a more uniform germination. Other factors to consider include soil preparation. Excellent seed bed preparation allows for a consistent seed placement that can achieve high seed to soil contact. Depth of seed placement is best between 2.5 4.5cm with starter fertilizer being added 5-7cm away & 2-4cm below the seed, it is essential to use precision planters that are setup for your particular soil conditions, this will optimize seed placement, soil contact & provide a more uniform germination. Fertiliser Maize silage has the potential to achieve yields in excess of 30DM/T/ha, for this, an effective fertilizer program must be formulated. First set the yield goal for the crop based on manageability, soil type, climate and available moisture and then proceed to conducting soil tests 4-6 weeks prior to the expected plant date. Knowing what is in the soil, you then should use the nutrient use charts to determine total amounts of nutrients required based on your yield target. It is important to know that by budgeting effectively, you will potentially be able to consistently crop the same area for many years. In these situations, it would be advisable to use a conditioning winter crop like Legumes that can improve soil structure and add to the totals of nitrogen within the soil profile. Maintaining a positive balance of available nutrients in the soil profile will greatly enhance how the crop utilizes water, how well the crop will reach each different stage of development, how quickly that crop reaches harvest and how well the crop will yield. New Brown Mid Rib Forage Sorghum x Sweet sorghum Superior 12 gene BMR pedigree Ultra Late flowering Very large, sweet & palatable leaves Excellent for standover grazing Excellent for silage/wrap Can grow to 3 metres high. Darrell Fiddler farm manager for De Bortoli s winery broadacre enterprise, Bilbul near Grifith NSW, has adopted the use of BMR Supreme to soak up excess potassium from the recycled water from the winery over the past 3 years with excellent results. WHO SHOULD GROW BMR Supreme? Because of its soft stems and big juicy leaves, it makes very good hay and silage wrap, as well as providing plenty of bulk for pit silage if allowed to grow close to full maturity. It is outstanding as standover feed for late summer into autumn. It is also an excellent choice for extensive range grazing. Join the Revolution This Year BMR Supreme 10 11

BMR The Brown Mid Rib Silage Specialist. BMR has been specially bred to suit the silage market. In one of our farmer trials BMR was grown under extremely tough dryland conditions for pit silage and still managed to yield 24.95 tonnes per hectare, with a Relative Feed Value of 117. BMR can also be cut early when the plants are 1 metre to 1.5 metres in height to make very good quality hay. Lush Highly Productive, Quick Feed. Lush is one of the most popular summer forages in Australia. Having been marketed for over 20 years, Lush has found a new niche with livestock producers as intensive management skills have been introduced more widely to forage sorghums. Lush is very quick to first grazing, has excellent regrowth and low prussic acid levels. It has proven to be a highly productive forage for beef, and dairy producers. Silage Specialist Superior 12 gene BMR pedigree Sorghum x sweet sorghum type BMR Technology boosts growth and milk productivity by 20% Highly digestible Grows to 3 metres high Produces a white head of grain Excellent for silage or early grazing Makes good hay if cut early Is an excellent intensive grazing option. Sudan grass x sorghum type Low prussic acid levels Suits intensive grazing and highest stocking rates Fine stemmed, especially at higher planting rates Very leafy forage with excellent leaf to stem ratio Ideal for early grazing Makes excellent hay due to high leaf content and regrowth ability. Mike Henry White Park, Hodgson Vale, QLD. I have not opened the BMR silage pit yet, but it looks like it will do the job with our Dairy herd. WHO SHOULD GROW Lush? Anyone wanting quick feed and lots of it. Lush is highly productive, with quality leafy feed. Due to its vigorous growth it lends itself to intensive grazing systems, and highest stocking rates. Kevin Burge, Swan Hill dairy farmer, Murray Goulburn supplier, standing in a crop that performed exceptionally well considering not a lot of love was given to the crop; it had 4 grazings with no feritiliser. It proved to be very versatile for our dairy system as it was thrown in very rough and has probably produced close to 10 DMT/ha in a very mild year. Crawford s BMR BMR at Kumbia at Kumbia QLDQLD. 12 13

Everlush Highly palatable Ultra Late Flowering forage. Everlush is one of a new range of top quality forage sorghums from HSR Seeds that will make grazing management easier. Because it will not flower until day length is less than 12 hours 20 minutes, it will maintain a high leaf to stem ratio, with less rank, stalky feed. Hunnigreen Sweet Leafy Feed for Longer - and a Safer Option. Hunnigreen is an Ultra Late flowering sweet sorghum that will not flower until daylight hours are less than 12 hours, 20 minutes. This provides leafier, high quality feed right through the summer. This also means your cattle are at less risk from sorghum ergot with Hunnigreen, as ergot only infects the plant at flowering. Hunnigreen can provide up to three months leafier, safer grazing than some older traditional type sweet sorghums. Example below: Ultra Late Flowering for more quality feed for a longer grazing period Improved palatability for higher intake per head and improved productivity Sudan grass x sorghum type Very fine stems and leaves Excellent for hay making Safe low prussic acid levels Ideal for early grazing. Variety Planting Date Days to Flower Date of Flowering Hunnigreen Advantage Hunnigreen 1st October 160 12th March 70 days (Over 2 months!) Sugargraze 1st October 90 29th December Ergot Risk at Flowering No risk until early March At risk from late December onwards WHO SHOULD GROW Hunnigreen? Anyone looking for a lot of leafy sweet feed to carry them through all summer and into autumn. Anyone who is has concerns over ergot infecting their earlier flowering forages. Hunnigreen is an ideal extensive range grazing hybrid, and provides excellent standover feed or silage. It is also very drought tolerant. WHO SHOULD GROW Everlush? Farmers seeking a truly versatile forage that will provide quality feed and a bulk of it. It is an excellent hay variety and being highly palatable is a great choice for intensive and extensive grazing situations. John Jeffries, from Delegate Station at Cann River, east Gippsland Sweet sorghum x Sweet sorghum hybrid Highly drought tolerant Excellent for silage Leafy with excellent palatability Excellent standover feed for late grazing into autumn and winter Can be grazed all summer Ultra late flowering means more feed for longer Will not run to head as quick as some sweet sorghums, so less exposure to Ergot risk. Dean Fry standing in a paddock of everlush near Shepparton in the Goulburn Valley. Dean Fry, HSR, standing in a trial paddock for bulk biomass and sugar in the MIA. Hunnigreen is proving to be an exceptional sweet sorghum hybrid, displaying massive bulk yields with brix levels in the high teens. The hybrid is increasingly becoming the top hybrid for biomass projects; here being tested in North Victoria. Hunnigreen provides high quality sweet feed from spring through summer, into autumn. 14 15

Forage Sorghum General information Tillering... Tillers are lateral branches that form below ground nodes. The number of tillers that develop is determined by plant population and spacing, soil fertility, early season growing conditions, and the genetic background of the hybrid. Tillers are most likely to develop when soil fertility and moisture supplies are ample during the first few weeks of the growing season and after grazing. Hybrids with a strong tillering trait may form one or more tillers on every plant even at relatively high populations if the environment is favorable early in the growing season. Stocking... Forage sorghums are capable of very quick high yields of fodder. They should be grazed between 80 cm to 1 meter high and stocked heavily enough to keep the crop short (earlier at lower stocking rates or in very good growing conditions). Pastures can be spelled by stocking the forage sorghum at a higher rate. Rotational grazing at high stocking rates is good practice. Alternatively, if the season produces an overabundance of growth, the crop should be cut for hay or silage. This particularly applies to the early planted and vigorous Sudan Grass cross hybrids such as Lush, Everlush and BMR Revolution. As a Cover Crop... Small crop growers have found forages such as Lush to have an important role to play in providing cover for their ground and at the same time providing large tonnages of vegetative material to improve the soil structure when ploughed in. Big quantities of green manure are produced quickly to enable ground to be made available for cash cropping. Under conditions of good moisture and high fertilizer residual, higher planting rates are recommended. Grazing... All HSR Seeds forage sorghums are suited to grazing sheep, beef and dairy cattle. Lush and BMR Revolution are known to often achieve five grazings or four grazings and one cut of hay where enough water and heat units are available. Hunnigreen and BMR Supreme are able to be grazed during summer and then allowed to carry over a big bulk of feed into the winter for breeder or store cattle. Hay and Silage... Forage sorghums have become popular for hay making with Lush, Everlush and BMR Revolution producing excellent quality hay. A conditioner should be used and higher planting rates promote thinner stems and greater leaf ratio. A hay making program in conjunction with grazing has numerous advantages. It enables greater flexibility in the grazing program in the normal fluctuations of the seasonal pattern. Hay and silage making can also eliminate wasted fodder in good growth periods, promote better quality grazing by keeping the crop short and give you the bonus of a replenished hay shed or silage pit. Hunnigreen is outstanding for use as silage and can produce enormous quantities of green chop. BMR is the first silage specialist BMR forage available, and will provide a higher feed value silage along with a large bulk of feed. Its large white grain head also contributes to the final feed value in the finished silage. BMR Supreme and Hunnigreen have shown they can produce an abundance of material with good sugar levels that can be pitted or made into hay if managed correctly Caution... All sorghums contain Prussic Acid, but it is most potent in plants under 6 weeks old, younger re-growth or in plants stressed from lack of moisture, cold weather or nutrient deficiency. Sudan Grass cross hybrids such as Lush, Everlush and BMR Revolution carry lower levels of Prussic Acid than the sweet sorghum crosses. Prussic acid issues can be partially managed by feeding high sulphur content stock blocks. Adding sulphur to the diet will ensure higher utilization of the crop at feeding. Nitrate poisoning is different to prussic acid poisoning and can occur in any fodder crop where very high nitrogen uptake has occurred during the growing period. A leaf test should be taken where you believe there is a risk of poisoning. Key Tips when deciding the correct variety Decide early that you will plant forage sorghum Select hybrids that are suitable to your production system: Grazing/ Hay/Silage Is it to be intensively managed Choose the variety according to the level of management input are you prepared to have?
